Chapter 39 - CHAPTER 39: WHAT LIES AHEAD.

The army moved again.

There had been no announcement to resume, no raised voice cutting through the stillness—only a subtle shift, almost imperceptible, that passed through the ranks like instinct.

Steel adjusted. Boots pressed forward. Horses obeyed the reins without question.

As though nothing had happened.

As though the halt had been planned.

At the front, Alexander rode in silence.

The horizon stretched wide before him, the land opening into long, uneven plains broken by sparse ridges and shallow dips in the earth.

It was familiar terrain—not in detail, but in nature.

Predictable.

Calculable.

Everything a battlefield should be.

Everything his mind could master.

Behind him, the army held formation with disciplined precision. No disorder. No hesitation. Lines remained intact, spacing exact, movement synchronized to an almost mechanical rhythm.

Control had returned.

At least, on the surface.
