I stirred slowly, the heavy, exhausting trauma of the previous night finally releasing its grip on my muscles. As my consciousness drifted back to reality, my hand instinctively slid across the soft cotton sheets, seeking the familiar, comforting warmth of my husband's body.
My fingers met with nothing but cool, empty fabric.
I blinked my eyes open, a slight frown touching my lips as I looked at the vacant side of the bed. For a fraction of a second, a tiny flutter of anxiety flared in my chest, the lingering aftershock of a woman who had almost been shot the night before.
But before the thought could even take root, the bedroom door smoothly swung open.
