The crisis from yesterday had finally passed. My father was awake, stable, and bossing the hospital nurses around by early morning, which was the ultimate sign that he was officially out of danger. A massive weight had been lifted from my chest regarding his health, but as my logical, analytical brain began to clear, it naturally drifted right back to the unresolved tension from the night before.
After we left the hospital, I had asked Franklin what he was about to tell me on the beach.
He had stiffened for a second, his grip on my hand tightening before he brushed it off. With a smooth, gentle smile, he had kissed my temple and told me that it was just minor issue and that it wasn't important enough to worry about while my father was in a hospital bed.
