Chapter 18 – The Day That Changed Everything
Fort Bragg, North Carolina – September 11, 2001
The late summer heat hung in the air as Jason Gibbs laced his tactical boots. Delta Force quarters were busy, but there were no urgent missions at that moment. It was a morning like any other.
He took a sip of coffee and picked up a folded newspaper from the mess hall table. The Middle East remained a ticking time bomb, but, until then, no one expected a drastic change in the game.
Then, the silence was broken by the abrupt sound of a television turning on.
"What the hell is this?" someone muttered.
Jason looked at the screen and almost dropped his coffee.
A World Trade Center tower was on fire.
The Unimaginable Happens
He stood up and approached the TV, along with several other operators. The reporter spoke in a trembling voice:
"—Apparently, a plane crashed into one of the Twin Towers. We still don't know if it was an accident or something intentional..."
The clock read 8:50 a.m.
Jason felt his stomach churn. He knew this wasn't an accident.
He exchanged glances with Hawk, his team leader. Neither of them said anything, but instinct screamed that something worse was coming.
Then, at 9:03 a.m., it happened.
On live TV, another plane crashed into the second tower.
The shock was absolute. No one could speak.
Jason clenched his fists.
"—This is an attack."
Hawk nodded.
"—Without a doubt."
And then, at 9:37 a.m., another news item exploded on the base's internal radio.
"—Explosion confirmed at the Pentagon! A plane hit the west side of the building!"
Jason felt his blood run cold.
His father was at the Pentagon.
Fear for His Father
Jason picked up the nearest phone and dialed NCIS directly.
The line was busy. He tried again. Nothing.
Each second felt like an eternity.
Finally, someone answered.
"NCIS, this is Agent Cassidy."
"Jason Gibbs. I need to know about my father. He was at the Pentagon today with Director Morrow."
Her voice trembled.
"We're still trying to confirm the situation. The attack hit the wing where some NCIS offices were located, but we don't yet know the number of victims."
Jason closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"If you find out anything, let me know."
"I will. But Jason..." she hesitated. "There are a lot of dead people there."
He hung up without answering.
Fox put his hand on his shoulder.
— Let's wait for news. He's tough, man. If anyone can survive this, it's Gibbs.
Jason just nodded.
But inside, he was burning.
The Answer Comes From Above
At 10:30 a.m., the Twin Towers collapsed.
Jason felt a lump in his throat as he watched the dust and debris consuming Manhattan. Thousands of people were dying in real time.
And then, finally, the call came.
Hawk entered the barracks and clapped his hands.
— All operators, to the briefing room, now!
Jason stood up immediately, leaving his coffee cup untouched.
He entered the room along with the other men of A Squad. The Delta Force Commander was there, with a file in his hand.
— Gentlemen, the United States has just suffered the worst attack in history. Four hijacked planes. Thousands dead.
He paused and looked directly at each of them.
"And now, we're going to war."
The Tip of the Spear
"Our mission will be simple, but lethal."
The Commander unfolded a map of Afghanistan on the table.
"In the coming days, our forces will mobilize for an invasion of Afghanistan. But we won't wait. Delta Force and the SEALs will be the first units to enter."
Jason felt the adrenaline surge.
"Our objective? Identify and eliminate Al-Qaeda cells. Capture or kill Osama bin Laden."
The silence in the room was absolute.
The Commander looked at them and concluded:
"You are the tip of the spear."
Jason looked at Hawk.
Hawk smiled slightly.
"That's what we were waiting for, wasn't it?"
Jason clenched his fists.
"Then let's hunt them down."
Fate Is Sealed
Later that night, Jason received a phone call.
— Gibbs.
He recognized the voice immediately.
— Dad.
There was a moment of silence before old Gibbs spoke:
— I'm fine. Director Morrow is too. But it was close.
Jason closed his eyes, letting out a sigh of relief.
— I'm glad to hear that.
— And you?
Jason looked at the equipment already prepared for the mission.
— I'm going to war.
There was a long pause on the other end of the line.
Finally, Gibbs spoke:
— Then take down these sons of bitches.
Jason smiled.
— You can count on it.
He hung up and looked at the horizon.
The war on terror had begun.
And he was ready to lead the hunt.
Chapter 19 – The Hunt in Tora Bora
Tora Bora Mountains, Afghanistan – December 2001
The icy wind from the mountains of eastern Afghanistan cut like sharp blades, swirling eddies of dirty snow across the rocky terrain. Jason Gibbs adjusted his Barrett MRAD .338 Lapua against his shoulder, his sights focused on the entrance to one of the Tora Bora caves, where intelligence indicated Osama bin Laden might be hiding.
The hunt had reached its climax.
The United States had spent the last three months devastating Al-Qaeda positions with air strikes and ground operations. Now, Delta Force, the CIA SAD (Special Activities Division), and British SAS operators were there to end it all once and for all.
Jason surveyed the desolate landscape through his thermal scope. Every rock and cave looked identical, but he knew something was moving inside.
The Attack Plan
Inside a makeshift shelter, a small group of operators gathered around a map.
CIA officer Daniel Reese pointed to several red markers indicating possible exits from the caves.
"We have confirmation that Bin Laden is here. Intercepted communications show he is surrounded. But that doesn't mean he's defenseless."
Fox, sitting in the corner with a rifle in his lap, snorted.
"That bastard always manages to escape."
Jason crossed his arms.
"Not this time."
Hawk, the leader of Delta Team, tapped the map.
"Our job is to ensure all escape routes are blocked. Afghan forces are attacking from one side, we attack from the other."
SAS operator Captain James "Red" Holloway looked at Hawk and nodded.
"We have snipers positioned. If any of them try to run, it will be the last thing they do." Jason analyzed the strategic points and tapped his knuckles on the table.
"So let's do this."
The Siege of Bin Laden
The first explosions echoed through the mountains in the middle of the night. The B-52 bombing had begun.
From atop a cliff, Jason watched the dust rise as rockets and 2,000-pound bombs hit the tunnels below.
Fox, lying beside him with an M110 SASS, murmured:
"If he's still alive after this, it's because the devil himself is protecting him."
Jason focused his thermal scope on the main entrance of one of the caves.
There was movement.
He pressed the radio.
"I have targets emerging from the caves. Three armed combatants."
On the other end of the line, Red replied:
"We have authorization to fire."
Jason held his breath and pulled the trigger.
BANG.
The first fighter fell to the ground, warm blood staining the snow.
Fox fired beside him, taking down the second.
The third tried to run, but an SAS operator landed a clean shot to the head.
But then… the radio exploded with shouts.
— Contact! Contact! They're fleeing to the Pakistani border!
Jason and Fox exchanged a tense look.
Hawk roared on the radio:
— All teams, move NOW!
The Escape of Bin Laden
Jason descended the slope with Fox and other operators, their feet sinking into the soft snow as they ran toward the network of tunnels below.
Afghan forces struggled to hold back the Al-Qaeda fighters, but many were escaping through secondary trails.
Jason spotted a group of men in white robes running among the trees.
— There! — he shouted, raising his rifle.
But before he could fire, heavy machine gun fire hit them from the left.
"COVER!"
Jason and Fox threw themselves behind a rock as bullets sliced through the air.
An RPG exploded nearby, throwing snow and dirt into the air.
Hawk shouted into the radio:
"They're fleeing to Pakistan! We need to close those routes!"
Red, from the SAS, replied furiously:
"We're trying, but there's resistance everywhere!"
Jason gritted his teeth and aimed quickly. He hit one of the snipers in the chest, taking him down instantly.
But when he looked back at the escape route… the main targets had disappeared.
Fox exhaled angrily.
"Shit… he escaped."
After the Storm
As the sun rose over the mountains, silence hung in the air.
The siege of Tora Bora had failed.
Jason looked at the destroyed tunnels, at the bodies scattered across the snow. They had killed hundreds of Al-Qaeda fighters, but Osama bin Laden escaped to Pakistan.
Hawk approached him, his face hardened.
"We did everything we could."
Jason closed his eyes for a moment before replying:
"It wasn't enough."
Red threw a cigarette into the snow, stepping on it.
"That bastard barely got away. But he won't be able to hide forever."
Jason looked at the horizon.
The war wasn't even close to being over.
And he would be there until the end of the hunt.
