Chapter 58 - Threads of Control

Volume 3 — Chapter 9

Threads of Control

The city had reached a turning point.

Not visibly.

Not loudly.

But fundamentally.

What once functioned as a place of survival…

Was now becoming a place of influence.

The Guild no longer simply assigned hunts.

It regulated them.

Trade no longer happened freely.

It was monitored.

Tracked.

Adjusted.

And power—

Was no longer hidden.

It was forming.

Inside a newly constructed structure near the center of the city—

A meeting was taking place.

Not public.

Not announced.

But important.

Leon Varis stood at the head of a long table, his expression composed as always.

Across from him—

Representatives.

Not of people.

But of power.

Kael Virex leaned slightly back in his chair, arms crossed.

"…Didn't expect to be invited to something like this."

Lyra stood beside him.

Silent.

Observing.

Orin Vale sat calmly, fingers interlocked.

"…You were invited because you're involved."

Kael smirked.

"…That sounds like trouble."

Leon didn't react.

"This city cannot grow without coordination."

His voice was calm.

Measured.

"And coordination requires agreement."

A faint scoff came from the side.

"Agreement?"

Darius Holt leaned forward slightly.

"…Or control?"

Leon met his gaze.

"…The difference depends on perspective."

Raven Dusk chuckled quietly from the shadows.

"…And who benefits."

Elyra Voss remained silent.

Watching.

The air in the room felt heavier than usual.

Not because of hostility—

But because of intent.

Kael exhaled quietly.

"…So what's the point of this?"

Leon answered immediately.

"Resource allocation."

Kael blinked.

"…That's it?"

Orin spoke calmly.

"It's everything."

All eyes shifted toward him.

Orin continued.

"Magic Stones power the city."

"Control the stones—"

"—you control the city."

Silence followed.

Because no one disagreed.

Leon nodded slightly.

"Exactly."

Darius crossed his arms.

"…And you want to divide it."

Leon corrected him.

"…Regulate it."

Raven smiled faintly.

"…Same thing."

Lyra's gaze shifted slightly.

"…Something's missing."

Kael frowned.

"…What?"

Lyra didn't answer immediately.

"…The real players."

The room fell quiet.

Because everyone felt it.

This meeting—

Wasn't complete.

Not truly.

A faint distortion passed through the air.

Subtle.

But undeniable.

Then—

A voice.

"…Correct."

Everyone turned instantly.

A figure stood at the far end of the room.

No one had seen them enter.

No one had sensed them arrive.

And yet—

They were there.

Kael's expression tightened.

"…That's not normal."

[Warning: Unknown Entity Detected]

[Analysis: Failed]

Lyra's eyes sharpened.

"…You're one of them."

The figure smiled slightly.

"…That depends on what you think 'them' means."

Leon stood slowly.

"…State your purpose."

The figure tilted its head.

"…Observation."

Raven chuckled.

"…That answer again."

The figure's gaze moved across the room.

Evaluating.

Measuring.

"…You're organizing."

Leon didn't deny it.

"…We are."

The figure nodded slightly.

"…Good."

A pause.

"…It will make things easier."

Kael leaned forward.

"…For what?"

The figure's smile didn't change.

"…For what comes next."

Silence.

Then—

Lyra stepped forward.

"…You're not here to observe."

The figure's eyes met hers.

"…No."

A faint shift in the air.

"…I'm here to prepare."

The tension spiked instantly.

[Warning: Energy fluctuation detected]

Darius stood.

"…Prepare for what?"

The figure answered simply.

"…Him."

Everything went still.

No one needed clarification.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Icarus."

The figure didn't confirm.

But didn't deny.

"…You're all building something."

Its gaze swept across them.

"…But none of it will matter."

A pause.

"…Not when he returns."

Raven's smile faded slightly.

"…You sound worried."

The figure's expression remained calm.

"…I am."

That—

Changed everything.

Because beings like that—

Didn't worry.

Lyra's voice lowered.

"…What are you planning?"

The figure tilted its head slightly.

"…Balance."

Kael frowned.

"…That doesn't sound good."

The figure almost laughed.

"…It isn't."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

Without warning—

The figure stepped back.

And vanished.

Gone.

The air returned to normal.

But the room—

Didn't.

Kael leaned back slowly.

"…Yeah."

"…That's a problem."

Leon remained still.

Thinking.

Darius exhaled sharply.

"…We're not ready for this."

Orin's expression had changed slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But we don't have a choice."

Lyra looked toward the space where the figure had stood.

"…They're moving faster now."

Kael rubbed his neck slightly.

"…So what do we do?"

Leon spoke.

Calm.

Firm.

"…We prepare."

Raven smiled faintly.

"…For something we can't control?"

Leon's gaze hardened slightly.

"…For something we must survive."

Far beyond the city—

The hidden figures stood together.

Silent.

Watching.

"…They've begun organizing."

"…Good."

"…And the Voidborne?"

A pause.

"…He's close."

Silence followed.

Then—

"…Then we begin."

Deep within the Void—

Icarus opened his eyes.

For the first time—

There was something different in them.

Not calm.

Not fully.

A faint flicker of something darker.

Something deeper.

[External convergence detected]

His voice was quiet.

"…Finally."

The Void trembled slightly.

And somewhere—

Far beyond understanding—

Something watched him back.

Smiling.
