Volume 3 — Chapter 4
The First Settlement
Morning arrived without warmth.
The sun rose over the broken horizon, its light stretching across the scarred battlefield—not to heal it, but to reveal it more clearly.
Cracked land.
Shattered remains.
Faint distortions still lingering in the air like invisible fractures.
And yet—
People were still here.
They hadn't left.
They hadn't run.
Instead…
They stayed.
---
Kael Virex stood at the edge of what had once been the battlefield's outer perimeter, now slowly turning into something else.
Not a war zone.
Not yet a city.
But no longer ruins alone.
"…They're really doing it," he muttered.
In front of him, groups of survivors moved with purpose.
Wooden structures were being raised.
Fragments of broken weapons were repurposed into tools.
Pieces of armor were melted down, reshaped, reused.
Nothing was wasted.
Nothing could be.
Because survival demanded efficiency.
---
Lyra Sen stepped beside him, her eyes scanning the growing activity.
"It was inevitable," she said calmly.
Kael glanced at her.
"I thought people would avoid this place."
"They should," she replied.
Her gaze shifted toward the distant center of the battlefield—that untouched space neither of them had approached.
"But they won't."
Kael exhaled quietly.
"…Because of the power."
Lyra nodded.
"Yes."
---
A loud voice cut through the air.
"Move those supports higher!"
"Don't leave gaps—if it collapses, we start over!"
Kael turned.
A tall man stood at the center of a group, directing several workers as they reinforced a large wooden structure.
His presence was commanding.
Not because of power—
But because people listened.
"Who's that?" Kael asked.
Lyra followed his gaze.
"…Darius Holt."
---
Darius Holt.
Former commander.
Survivor.
Now—
Something else.
---
Darius stepped forward, inspecting the structure with a sharp, critical gaze.
"Too weak," he said bluntly.
One of the workers frowned.
"We used everything we had."
"Then use better," Darius replied.
"We don't get second chances out here."
His tone wasn't harsh.
Just absolute.
---
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"…He's serious."
"He has to be," Lyra said.
"If this place fails… everyone dies."
---
A smaller group moved past them, carrying a large, glowing fragment between them.
The energy radiating from it was faint—but noticeable.
Kael frowned.
"…What is that?"
Lyra's eyes focused on it.
"Residual fragment."
"From the battlefield?"
"Yes."
---
The group carefully placed it inside a partially built structure.
Moments later—
The fragment pulsed.
Light spread faintly across the walls.
The structure stabilized.
---
Kael's expression shifted.
"…So they're using it."
Lyra nodded.
"As fuel."
---
Before Kael could respond—
A faint blue screen flickered in front of his vision.
---
[System Activated]
[User recognized]
[Basic functions available]
---
He blinked.
"…Again?"
Lyra glanced at him.
"You're seeing it too?"
Kael nodded slowly.
"…Yeah."
---
Around them—
Others began reacting the same way.
Some looked confused.
Some focused.
Some… relieved.
---
[Resource detected: Residual Fragment]
[Energy density: Moderate]
[Potential use: Power / Trade]
---
Kael exhaled slowly.
"…So it's back."
"The system never left," Lyra said.
"It was just… unstable."
---
A sharp voice interrupted them.
"If you're not working, you're wasting time."
Kael turned.
A woman stood a few meters away, arms crossed, watching them with a sharp, unimpressed expression.
"…And you are?" Kael asked.
---
"Mira Kestrel."
---
Her tone was direct.
Confident.
Her posture relaxed—but ready.
The kind of person who didn't need to prove anything.
---
"Hunter," she added.
---
Kael tilted his head slightly.
"…Hunter?"
Mira gestured toward the outer regions beyond the forming settlement.
"Something out there needs to be dealt with."
---
Kael frowned.
"…Monsters?"
Mira didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she glanced at Lyra.
"…You've been out there."
Lyra nodded.
Mira looked back at Kael.
"They're stronger now."
---
Kael sighed.
"Of course they are."
---
Mira continued.
"We don't go too far out yet."
"Just enough to keep the area manageable."
---
Kael crossed his arms.
"And that's working?"
Mira's expression didn't change.
"For now."
---
Lyra spoke quietly.
"They're avoiding this place."
---
Mira's eyes narrowed slightly.
"…You noticed that too."
---
Kael looked between them.
"…Avoiding?"
Mira nodded once.
"They don't come close unless provoked."
---
Kael glanced toward the battlefield again.
"…Because of what happened here."
---
Neither of them disagreed.
---
A loud metallic sound echoed nearby.
Kael turned again.
A new structure was being assembled—larger, more reinforced than the others.
Several individuals worked together under Darius's direction.
At the center of it—
A board.
Covered in markings.
Symbols.
Requests.
---
Mira pointed toward it.
"That's where it starts."
---
Kael narrowed his eyes.
"…Starts what?"
---
"The Guild."
---
The word hung in the air.
---
Lyra tilted her head slightly.
"…A Hunter's Guild?"
---
Mira nodded.
"Call it whatever you want."
"People need structure."
"Something to organize hunts, assign tasks, manage risk."
---
Kael looked at the board again.
"…And people will just follow that?"
---
Darius's voice carried across the area.
"They will if they want to survive."
---
Kael smirked slightly.
"…He's everywhere, huh?"
---
Mira allowed a faint smile.
"Someone has to be."
---
More names began appearing on the board.
Requests.
Assignments.
Locations.
---
[New Task Registered]
[Objective: Outer zone clearance]
[Reward: Magic Stone fragments]
---
Kael stared at the notification.
"…Magic Stones?"
---
Lyra answered this time.
"Every creature we've encountered so far…"
She paused.
"…Drops something."
---
Mira nodded.
"A core."
"Condensed energy."
---
Kael's expression sharpened.
"…And that's what you're using as fuel."
---
"Exactly," Mira replied.
---
Kael let out a quiet breath.
"…So that's the economy now."
---
Lyra folded her arms.
"Simple."
"Effective."
"Dangerous."
---
Mira glanced toward the horizon.
"…Necessary."
---
The settlement continued to grow.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Purposefully.
---
Structures became stronger.
Paths began forming.
People organized themselves.
---
It wasn't a city yet.
But it was becoming one.
---
And at the center of it all—
The Guild board stood.
A symbol.
Not of power—
But of survival.
---
Kael looked at it for a long moment.
Then—
"…Guess I'm signing up."
---
Mira raised an eyebrow.
"You sure?"
---
Kael smirked slightly.
"Better than waiting to die."
---
Lyra sighed quietly.
"…I'll support."
---
Mira nodded once.
"Then don't slow me down."
---
They moved toward the board.
---
Far above—
The sky remained clear.
But for a brief moment—
A faint distortion passed through it.
Unnoticed.
---
And far beyond—
In a place untouched by time—
The Void stirred.
---
[External world stabilization: in progress]
---
Icarus continued his training.
Unaware—
Or perhaps unconcerned—
Of what was forming below.
---
Because the settlement…
The Guild…
The people rebuilding—
---
Were only the beginning.
---
Something else was moving.
Quietly.
Carefully.
Watching.
---
And this time—
It wasn't human.
