Chapter 48 - Chapter 47: The Artifact's Secret

Vol 02: The Hunt │ Part 04: In Between

1

The journey back to the settlement was quieter than the journey out.

Kaelen walked at the front, Fenris beside him, the Void's Heart Core warm in his pouch. The valley was behind them, its mist dispersed, its whispers silenced. But the weight of the trials still lingered—Zora's hollow eyes, Lyra's pale face, the echo of a thousand accusations.

They made camp at dusk, sheltered by a cluster of silver-barked trees. The twin moons rose overhead, casting long shadows across the grass.

Kaelen sat apart, the Core in his hands. It pulsed with a faint, violet light, warm against his palm. He turned it over, studying its surface. It was smooth, almost fluid, like a drop of frozen shadow.

"What is it?" Lyra asked, sitting beside him.

"I do not know." He held it up to the moonlight. "Amara said it was forged by the first Progenitor. It can sever the connection between the Heart and the one who wields it."

Lyra reached out, her fingers hovering over the Core. "May I?"

Kaelen handed it to her.

Lyra held it carefully, her Scholar's Kite pulsing. She closed her eyes, her brow furrowing.

"It is old," she said. "Very old. Older than the Grey Cabinet. Older than the Conclave." She opened her eyes. "But it is not complete. It is... waiting."

"Waiting for what?"

Lyra shook her head. "I do not know. But I think it needs to be attached to something. A vessel. A focus."

Kaelen looked at the Core. A focus. Like a blade.

He reached for one of his guinunting, the curved blade he had forged in the Between. It was dark, shimmering, its edge keen.

He pressed the Core against the pommel.

2

The Core blazed with light.

Violet energy exploded outward, cascading down the blade, wrapping around it like living veins. The guinunting hummed in Kaelen's hand, vibrating with a resonance that matched his heartbeat.

Lyra gasped. "What did you do?"

Kaelen looked at the blade. The Core had fused with the pommel, becoming one with the metal. The violet veins pulsed along the blade's length, casting faint shadows on the grass.

"I think... I think it chose this blade," he said.

He swung the guinunting. The blade sang through the air, leaving a trail of violet light. He could feel the Core's resonance now—a steady, patient pulse, waiting for its purpose.

"Severance," he said. "It severs connections. Bonds. Resonances."

Lyra wrote quickly in her journal. "The Core attached itself to your blade. It is part of you now."

Kaelen sheathed the guinunting. The violet light faded, but he could still feel the Core's presence—warm, alive, waiting.

"Then I am ready," he said.

3

That night, Kaelen dreamed of the figure again.

He was standing in a field of stars, the guinunting in his hand. The blade pulsed with violet light, the Core's resonance steady and strong.

The figure stood before him, its face hidden in shadow.

You have found the Core, the figure said. You have bonded it to your blade. But you do not yet understand its purpose.

"Show me," Kaelen said.

The figure raised a hand. The stars around them shifted, forming a pattern—a silver thread, stretching across the void.

The Core severs bonds, the figure said. But it does not sever all bonds. Only those that are false. Only those that are forced.

Kaelen looked at the silver thread. "Solon's connection to the Heart."

Yes. The figure pointed to the thread. It is a bond of hunger. Of domination. It was never meant to exist. The Core will sever it—cleanly, completely.

Kaelen nodded. "I understand."

The figure lowered its hand. You have grown, Kaelen. You have mastered the Void Step. You have found the Core. But there is still much to learn. The Artisan Kite waits. The Combat Kite hungers. The Insight Kite watches.

"I know," Kaelen said. "I will not stop growing."

The figure smiled—a warm, gentle smile.

I know you will not.

4

Kaelen woke with the sunrise.

He sat on a rocky outcropping, looking out at the Between. The twin suns were climbing, casting long shadows across the valley. Fenris pressed against his leg, his violet patterns dimmed but steady.

You dreamed of the figure again, the hound said through the bond.

Kaelen nodded. "It showed me the Core's purpose. It severs false bonds."

And Solon's bond to the Heart is false.

"Yes." Kaelen touched the guinunting's pommel. The Core pulsed, warm and alive. "When we face him, I will sever it."

Fenris pressed his head against Kaelen's hand.

Then we will face him together.

5

Lyra found them an hour later, her journal open.

"I have been thinking about the Core," she said. "It attached itself to your blade. That means it is not a weapon in itself. It is a tool that enhances your weapon."

Kaelen nodded. "It severs false bonds. Only false bonds."

Lyra wrote quickly. "That is important. It means you cannot use it to sever true bonds—friendships, loyalties, love. Only bonds of domination, of hunger, of control."

Kaelen looked at the guinunting. The violet veins pulsed faintly.

"Then it is perfect," he said. "Solon's bond to the Heart is the most false bond of all."

6

Zora approached them, her cat eyes shadowed.

"I have been thinking about the valley," she said. "About what I saw. The Haven. All of them."

Kaelen looked at her. "You do not have to talk about it."

"I want to." Zora sat beside him. "I saw them all. Mara. Seph. Jun. Wren. Bram. Calder. They told me I failed them."

"You did not fail them."

"I know." Zora's voice was quiet. "I know I did not fail them. I survived. I fought. I am still fighting. But the valley showed me that I was carrying their guilt. All of it."

Kaelen was silent for a moment. Then he said: "What did you do with it?"

Zora looked at him. Her cat eyes were clear.

"I let it go," she said. "I told them I was not weak. I told them I was not a failure. And they dissolved."

Kaelen nodded. "That is what the valley does. It shows you what you are carrying. And then it forces you to put it down."

Zora smiled—a small, genuine smile. "Yes."

7

The next morning, they continued their journey.

The settlement was visible in the distance, smoke rising from its chimneys. Kaelen walked at the front, Fenris beside him, the guinunting at his hip. The Core pulsed against his leg, warm and alive.

Lyra walked beside him, her journal open. "When we return, we need to find a way back to the Rift."

"I know," Kaelen said. "The Between is not our home."

"Solon is still out there. He is still hunting."

Kaelen touched the guinunting. "Then we will find him. And we will end this."

8

Elder Amara met them at the settlement's entrance.

Her spiral patterns were glowing brighter than usual, and her face was grave.

"You found it," she said, looking at the guinunting.

Kaelen drew the blade. The Core pulsed, violet light cascading down the edge.

"The Void's Heart Core," he said. "It attached itself to my blade."

Amara studied the blade, her ancient eyes unreadable.

"It is ready," she said. "And so are you."

Kaelen sheathed the blade. "Then we find a way back to the Rift. We face Solon. And we sever his bond to the Heart."

Amara nodded. "There is a rift. Two days east of here. It is unstable, but it will take you back."

Kaelen looked at his friends. Lyra, her journal clutched to her chest. Zora, her cat eyes gleaming. Fenris, his violet patterns blazing.

"Then we go," he said. "We finish this."
