Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 – Confessions That Burn and Deals Sealed in Fire

Isaac's mind went completely blank, panic swallowing every coherent thought the moment the countdown shifted to him. The pain from the last electric shock still lingered in his muscles, twitching uncontrollably, and he knew he couldn't endure another one. With no time to think, he blurted out the first thing that came to mind.

"We… we've been working with the gangs!"

Jaden's eyes shot wide open in pure shock, disbelief crashing over him like a wave. "What the hell are you doing?!" he shouted, his voice cracking with panic. "Isaac, are you insane? That's not something you say out loud!"

His face twisted with fury as fear crept into his chest. He knew exactly what gangs did to traitors, and worse, what they did to their families.

"They'll kill everyone you care about!" he roared. "Shut your mouth!"

Isaac's expression tightened, a faint flush rising beneath his dark skin, but he didn't back down. "If we don't talk, we die right here!" he shot back, his voice shaking but determined. "I've got a wife… she's pregnant. You want them dead too?"

The words hit hard, cutting through the tension for a brief second. Isaac looked like he wanted to say more, but Rex's voice cut cleanly through the moment.

"Enough," came the calm interruption from the shadows. "Your turn, pig."

Jaden clenched his teeth, swallowing his anger as survival instinct took over. His voice dropped as he forced the words out.

"I told you earlier—fifty thousand gets you promoted. That's a lie. It only takes thirty. I skimmed twenty off the top."

Isaac's eyes widened instantly, the whites stark against the dim light. "You what?" he barked, fury exploding out of him. "We've been partners for five years, and you've been screwing me over like that?"

His voice rose, filled with rage and betrayal. "You think I'm stupid? I knew you were a racist piece of shit!"

The argument spiraled instantly, the two of them snapping back and forth, their restraint completely gone.

"Your turn," Rex said casually, cutting through their shouting.

Isaac sucked in a breath, forcing himself to focus. "Most of the officers in the 21st Precinct are dirty," he said quickly. "They're all working with the gangs, not just us."

Jaden tilted his head back, staring at the ceiling like a man already condemned. It was over. Whether it was the gangs or the department, there was no coming back from this.

His thoughts twisted bitterly. Partnering with him had been a mistake from the beginning.

"Interesting," Rex's voice echoed with faint amusement. "Your turn."

Jaden's jaw tightened, anger bubbling under the surface, but he forced himself to think. If he was going down, he wasn't dragging his family with him.

He shifted tactics.

"Our precinct chief, Charlie, once took a bribe to let a rapist walk free," he said, carefully steering the conversation toward internal corruption. "There's plenty like that. Dirty cops everywhere."

If they stuck to exposing the department, maybe—just maybe—they could avoid crossing lines that would get their families killed.

Isaac caught on this time, nodding quickly. "Yeah, I've heard that too. And he's got a mistress tied to one of the gangs. That's how they built their power."

Jaden closed his eyes briefly. It wasn't enough.

Not even close.

Something inside him snapped.

"You know what?" he said suddenly, his voice sharp with bitterness. "Let's really talk, Isaac. Remember when we first partnered up? I bought you drinks, introduced you to a 'friend'?"

Isaac frowned, confusion flickering across his face.

"He wasn't my friend," Jaden continued coldly. "Just some guy I met at a bar. You got drunk that night… woke up feeling real off the next morning, didn't you?"

The realization hit Isaac like a punch to the face.

"You…" His expression twisted violently as rage exploded out of him. "I knew something was wrong! I'll kill you!"

He struggled wildly against his restraints, trying to lunge at Jaden, his fury completely unrestrained now. The two descended into chaos, hurling insults, accusations, and years of buried resentment at each other.

Then the countdown resumed.

"Five… four… three…"

The sound snapped Isaac back to reality. His breathing was heavy, eyes bloodshot as something darker settled in.

Fine.

If it was going to end like this, he'd make sure Jaden suffered.

He licked his lips slowly, voice dropping.

"Jaden," he said, dragging out the moment. "I slept with your wife."

Silence.

Complete, suffocating silence.

Jaden stared at him, disbelief etched across his face. Then he sneered, forcing out a laugh that sounded hollow even to himself. "That's the best you've got? Revenge fantasies? You better think of something real before we both get fried."

"It's your turn," Rex's voice came calmly from the darkness.

Jaden froze.

A slow, cruel smile spread across Isaac's face, teeth flashing in the dim light.

"I checked," Rex added, his tone almost bored. "So yes… your turn."

Jaden's world tilted.

He looked at Isaac again, searching for any sign of a lie.

"Dear Jaden," Isaac said softly, his voice almost affectionate now. "I'm not lying. We've been seeing each other for a while."

He leaned forward slightly, savoring every word.

"I know she likes black lace. And I know exactly what she likes in bed."

"Fuck!" Jaden roared, all control snapping at once as he threw himself toward Isaac, pure rage consuming him.

Isaac laughed, loud and unrestrained, even as he struggled against the restraints.

The game had reached its peak.

High above the city, inside the elegant rooftop restaurant, the atmosphere was entirely different.

After their long conversation, Wilson Fisk seemed to hesitate for a moment, as if weighing something important. His fingers brushed lightly against the cufflinks at his wrist, a small, habitual gesture.

Vanessa noticed immediately, her gaze narrowing slightly. "Those mean something to you, don't they?"

Fisk nodded, his expression softening. "They belonged to my father. They're all I have left of him."

His voice carried a quiet weight, each word deliberate.

"When I think about him, I remember my childhood. My dreams. And eventually… this city."

Vanessa tilted her head, curiosity deepening. "And how are those connected?"

Fisk's eyes darkened slightly, something deeper surfacing beneath his calm exterior. "Because I saw what people are capable of, even as a child. The world isn't simple. This city isn't simple."

He glanced out toward the glowing skyline beyond the glass.

"But I love it," he said firmly. "And I want to change it."

His gaze shifted suddenly, landing on the bag beside Vanessa.

"You brought a gun," he said.

Vanessa hesitated, caught off guard. After a moment, she nodded. "This place… it's not exactly safe."

Fisk let out a quiet sigh. "That's exactly the problem."

He gestured toward the city below, his voice gaining strength.

"Gangs everywhere. Chaos. No order. People living in fear. This city needs structure—real structure."

Vanessa hesitated, her thoughts drifting back to something she had heard before. "That man… the Demon Face. He said you were—"

"I've lied to many people," Fisk interrupted gently. "But I don't want to lie to you."

He held her gaze, unwavering.

"Everything you've heard is probably true."

He took a breath, his voice lowering.

"I've hurt people. I will hurt more. And I don't enjoy it. It weighs on me every time."

Then his tone hardened, conviction replacing hesitation.

"But it's necessary. The system is broken. The police are useless. They don't protect this city—they hold it back."

His hand tightened slightly as he spoke.

"I will break that system. Build something new. Set rules that everyone follows."

His eyes burned with intensity.

"This city used to be great. It can be again. And I'm the one who will make that happen."

Vanessa stared at him, stunned, caught between fear and fascination.

Fisk reached out, taking her hand gently, his expression softening once more.

"You won't need that gun with me," he said quietly.

She hesitated for a long time, conflict clear in her eyes. Then, slowly, she picked up her bag, reached inside, and pulled out a small silver pistol.

Without a word, she handed it to him.

A satisfied smile spread across Fisk's face.

"So you've made your choice," he said.

His voice softened.

"Are you ready to step into my world?"

Vanessa gave a small, shy smile. "Yes… I think I am."

Fisk clapped his hands once.

The response was immediate.

Chairs scraped softly as every other guest in the restaurant stood up in perfect unison. Without a word, they filed out, leaving the space completely empty.

Vanessa's eyes widened as realization set in.

There had never been anyone else here.

Fisk took her hand again, guiding her toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"I've prepared something for you," he said, his voice smooth. "You're going to love it."
