Chapter 88: The Quiet After the Storm

The city didn't fall.

But it didn't stand either.

Eryndor existed in something in between.

Aftermath – A Broken Calm

The fires had been put out.

Mostly.

Smoke still drifted through the air

lingering.

Buildings stood.

But fractured.

Streets remained

But buried beneath debris.

And the people.

Those who survived.

Moved slowly.

Quietly.

As if sound itself might bring it all back.

Because for the first time since it began.

There was no pressure.

No whispers.

No influence.

Just silence.

Real silence.

And it was heavier than the chaos.

Medical Wing – Emergency Sector

The halls were crowded.

Not chaotic.

But strained.

Healers moved constantly.

From one patient to another.

Focused.

Controlled urgency.

Inside one of the secured rooms.

They rested.

Bram sat on the edge of a bed.

Bandaged across his torso.

Bruised but conscious.

"…Feels weird," he muttered.

Nyra stood near the window

Arms folded.

Wrapped in layered bindings

Her expression distant.

"…What does?" she asked.

Bram exhaled slowly.

"…Not fighting something."

A pause.

"…Not feeling it in the air."

Tovin leaned against the wall

Eyes closed recovering but listening.

"…Don't get used to it," he said quietly.

"…This isn't over."

Lira didn't respond.

Because she wasn't listening.

She sat beside Kael.

Unmoving.

Kael

He hadn't woken up.

Not once.

Not even slightly.

His body was stable.

Barely.

But his presence.

Wasn't.

It fluctuated.

Faint pulses.

Rising.

Falling.

Unpredictable.

Like something inside him.

Still moving.

Still unfinished.

"…He's not just unconscious," Nyra said quietly.

Lira didn't look away from him.

"…I know."

A pause.

"…He's still fighting something."

Tovin opened his eyes slowly.

"…Or becoming something."

That sat heavily in the room.

Because they had all seen it.

What he became.

What he touched.

And what it cost.

Bram shifted slightly.

"…He'll wake up," he said.

Not confidently.

But firmly.

"…He has to."

Lira's hand tightened slightly around Kael's.

"…Yeah," she whispered.

"…He will."

But her eyes said something else.

Uncertainty.

Fear.

Not of losing him.

But of what he might be when he returned.

Far Beyond the City

High above the broken edges of Eryndor

Where the destruction blurred into untouched land. Two figures stood.

Watching silent-Kade.

And another.

The wind moved around them.

But neither reacted.

Their focus remained on the city.

On him.

"…He did it," the unknown figure said.

Their voice was calm. Measured

but there was something beneath it.

Respect.

Kade didn't respond immediately.

His gaze remained fixed.

"…No," he said finally.

A pause.

"…He survived it."

The distinction mattered.

Because what Kael had done.

Wasn't meant to be survived.

The unknown figure tilted their head slightly."You sound proud."Kade exhaled quietly."I am."

For the first time.

A faint smile touched his expression.

"He chose to hold on."A pause.

"…That's harder than gaining power."

The other figure watched the city below.

"…And now?"

Kade's gaze hardened slightly.

"Now the real fight begins."A Warning Unspoken.

The unknown figure turned slightly.

Looking not at the city. But beyond it.Far beyond.

"…They felt it," they said.

No explanation needed.

Kade nodded once.

"…Of course they did."

A pause.

"…Nyxara falling wasn't quiet."

The air shifted subtly.

Heavy.Distant.

But coming closer.

"He'll need to be ready," the figure said.

Kade's expression didn't change.

"He won't be."A pause.

"But he'll stand anyway."

That was Kael.

And that was why he mattered.

Back in the Medical Wing

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lira leaned forward slightly.

Resting her head near Kael's arm.

Not sleeping.

Just… staying.

"…You don't get to leave like that," she whispered.

A pause.

"…Not after all this."

For a moment.

Nothing happened.

Then.

Very faint.

Barely noticeable.

Kael's fingers moved.

Just slightly.

Lira froze.

Her eyes widened.

"…Kael?" she whispered.

No response.

But it was enough.

Because he wasn't gone.

Not yet.

And somewhere deep inside.

Whatever he had become.

Was still holding on.
