The first thing Mabel noticed was the smell of salt, wet timber, rotting fish, and smoke.
None of it belonged together, yet somehow humans had built an entire civilization around it.
She stood at the bow of the enormous ship as thick morning fog slowly began lifting from the sea.
For several long moments, she saw nothing except endless white.
Then, she finally saw land.
Gigantic white cliffs rose from the sea like walls carved by forgotten gods. They stretched endlessly across the horizon, catching the pale morning light until they almost glowed.
The sailors around her immediately became louder.
"We're home!"
"England!"
"We made it!"
Laughter spread across the deck. Some men removed their caps, and others simply stared toward the cliffs with relief written across their faces.
