"Give it everything you've got! Show me your worth!"
Locke's voice cut across the training field like a whip, sharp and commanding. The recruits scrambled across the obstacle course, bodies low to the ground as they pushed through mud, climbed barriers, and forced themselves forward under pressure.
His eyes swept across the entire field, watching every movement, every hesitation. But beneath that broad inspection, his true focus never wavered.
It was always on one person.
Steve.
More than a month had passed since Locke took over the training camp. Under his direct supervision, Steve had improved at a pace that would have been unthinkable before. His endurance had increased, his coordination sharpened, and his determination had only grown stronger.
Yet some things couldn't be changed so easily.
His body still lagged behind the others. No matter how hard he pushed himself, no matter how much he improved, the gap in raw physical strength remained.
"Colonel Locke!"
A soldier rushed over from the side, his expression urgent. He leaned in close, lowering his voice as he relayed a message directly into Locke's ear.
Locke's brow furrowed slightly.
Without wasting time, he followed the soldier toward the command tent.
Inside, Colonel Chester stood by a communication device, speaking into it with a serious expression. The moment he noticed Locke entering, he ended the call and turned toward him.
"Locke," he said, his tone shifting. "You've been overseeing the training camp for a while now. It's time you knew about the next phase."
Locke remained silent, giving him his full attention.
"The Germans have developed… something unusual," Chester continued. "Advanced technology. Enough to shift the balance of this war. Command has decided to respond with a new initiative."
"A new initiative?" Locke echoed, feigning confusion.
"The Super Soldier Program."
Chester stepped forward, laying out the details. His explanation was thorough, outlining both the ambition and the risk behind the project.
"So what you're saying," Locke said after a pause, "is that the military needs someone completely loyal to undergo this transformation."
"Exactly," Chester confirmed. "And based on my recommendation, the candidate is—"
"Steve."
Locke cut him off without hesitation.
If he let Chester finish, there was a chance things might shift in an unexpected direction. He wasn't going to take that risk.
Chester sighed, a wry smile forming on his face.
"Truthfully," he admitted, "I think you're the better candidate."
Locke waved it off immediately, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"Steve is the right choice. He's exactly the kind of man this program needs."
Chester studied him for a moment, then let out a quiet breath.
"Do you understand what this means?" he asked. "This program could change everything. And yet you're willing to pass on it."
Then his expression shifted, becoming more serious.
"Locke… I've never respected someone as much as I respect you. On behalf of our newly established Strategic Homeland Defense and Logistics Agency, I'd like to formally invite you to join us."
Locke blinked.
"…What?"
So it really was happening.
On the other side of the base, Carter arrived at the training field without delay. She moved with purpose, her eyes scanning the area until they landed on the person she was looking for.
Steve stood there, drenched in sweat, still catching his breath from training.
The moment she approached, the atmosphere shifted. Nearby soldiers couldn't help but glance over, some nudging each other, others whispering jokes under their breath.
Carter acknowledged them briefly before stepping directly in front of Steve.
"Steve. Come with me."
"Uh… yes, ma'am."
Under the confused stares of everyone around him, Steve followed her. She led him to a waiting truck, motioning for him to climb into the back.
Still trying to process what was happening, Steve sat down and looked at her blankly.
"Colonel Locke recommended you," Carter said calmly. "You've been selected for the program. Don't disappoint him."
"Colonel Locke…?" Steve's expression changed instantly.
The hesitation vanished, replaced by something firm and resolute.
"I won't fail," he said.
He didn't fully understand what lay ahead, but that didn't matter. If Locke believed in him, that was enough.
Carter watched him in silence, something complicated flickering in her eyes. Concern, hope, doubt—they all mixed together.
Then, unexpectedly, she spoke again.
"Have you ever danced?"
Steve blinked, caught off guard.
"Danced? Not really… I don't think I'd be very good at it."
His voice dipped slightly.
"No one ever… asks me."
"Then how about this?" Carter said, her tone softening just a little. "When this war is over… would you like to dance with me?"
The words hit him harder than anything else.
Steve's heart began to pound, his chest tightening as he looked at her. For a moment, he couldn't even find his voice.
Then he nodded. Hard.
The two of them shared a brief smile before the truck rolled to a stop.
Ahead of them stood a heavily guarded military facility. Security was tight, layers of checkpoints leading deeper into the complex. Carter's expression returned to its usual seriousness as she led Steve inside.
They moved quickly through the underground corridors, passing through restricted zones until they reached the core experimental area.
The moment Steve stepped inside, his eyes locked onto a familiar figure.
"Colonel?"
Locke stood among the gathered personnel, his presence unmistakable. Even in a room filled with high-ranking officials and scientists, he stood out effortlessly.
He stepped forward, a faint smile on his face, and placed a hand on Steve's shoulder.
"You don't mind that I recommended you for this, do you?" he asked.
"It's an honor, Colonel!" Steve replied immediately, his voice filled with excitement.
On the way here, Carter had explained everything. He knew what this experiment meant. He knew that the original candidate had been Locke himself—the most decorated combat hero in the country.
And yet that man had chosen him instead.
"You'll do fine," Locke said, his tone steady.
Then he turned toward the lead scientist.
Professor Abraham Erskine stood nearby, his eyes shining with interest as he looked at Locke.
"Such a pity, Colonel," Erskine said with genuine regret. "I was truly looking forward to having you participate."
The idea of using his serum on someone like Locke had been tempting beyond words.
Locke chuckled lightly.
"The man I recommended is better suited than I am."
He pulled Steve slightly forward, bringing him into full view.
All eyes shifted to him.
For a moment, Steve felt the weight of every gaze in the room. Then he straightened, raising his hand in a crisp salute, his expression firm.
Erskine's eyes softened.
"Good to see you again, Steve."
There was recognition there—familiarity. Steve blinked in surprise, remembering the man who had once encouraged him to enlist.
He hadn't realized then who he was speaking to.
Erskine gave his shoulder a reassuring pat before signaling to the team.
The process began.
With assistance from the technicians, Steve stepped toward a large, sealed chamber made of reinforced copper. The structure loomed over him, humming faintly with restrained energy.
Locke watched closely, a faint excitement stirring within him.
This was it.
The turning point.
As Steve entered the chamber, the equipment was activated. The serum was injected, and the machines surged to life, flooding the chamber with energy.
The moment the voltage spiked, Steve's body convulsed.
A scream tore from his throat, raw and unrestrained.
"Shut it down!" someone shouted.
But before they could act—
"I can take it!" Steve roared. "Turn it up! All the way!"
Through the glass, his eyes locked onto Locke, Carter, Chester—everyone watching.
He refused to fail them.
Erskine hesitated for only a second before nodding.
"Increase the output!"
The power surged higher.
At first, Steve's screams continued. But gradually, something changed.
The pain stopped breaking him.
His body endured.
Then it adapted.
"Good… good!" Erskine murmured, unable to contain his excitement.
Finally, Carter rushed forward, shutting down the system as the process reached its peak.
The chamber hissed open.
Everyone leaned forward, staring.
The frail, underweight recruit was gone.
In his place lay a tall, powerfully built man, his muscles defined, his frame transformed completely.
