Chapter 88 - Chapter 88 – Hydra Exposed

Gunfire erupted without warning.

Machine guns roared from every direction as the convoy was suddenly engulfed in a storm of bullets. The black vehicle carrying Carol and Kelly was instantly riddled with holes, its metal frame shredded under the relentless barrage.

The attackers expected screams.

Instead, they froze in disbelief.

The two women sitting in the back seat remained completely unharmed.

"Very well," a calm female voice said coldly. "You've managed to offend me."

Carol's quiet reprimand echoed across the street.

A moment later—

Hum!

A terrifying surge of cosmic energy burst outward.

With a deafening explosion, the damaged black car disintegrated from the inside. The violent energy wave blasted outward like a shockwave, sweeping across the surrounding vehicles.

The cars parked beside the convoy were thrown more than ten meters away. Metal twisted and shattered as the force of the explosion sent debris flying through the air.

A faint golden energy shield surrounded Carol.

The protective barrier shimmered like woven light, forming a protective dome around her and Kelly. Carol had deliberately strengthened the shield around her terrified cousin.

Kelly's face had turned pale with fear.

Her body trembled uncontrollably as she clutched Carol's arm.

"S-Sister… what do we do?" Kelly stammered.

She instinctively called Carol "sister," even though their family relationship was technically more complicated. But Carol's youthful appearance made the title feel completely natural.

"It's fine," Carol said softly.

A faint smile appeared on her face, though her eyes had grown cold.

Attacks like this were nothing compared to the battles she had fought across the galaxy. She had destroyed entire alien fleets with her own hands.

Whoever organized this ambush clearly had no idea who they were dealing with.

But the situation still made her furious.

What angered her most was the identity of the first attacker.

A S.H.I.E.L.D agent.

If the organization she once trusted had truly betrayed her, that would be far worse than the attack itself.

"So you want to test me?" Carol muttered.

Her beautiful face hardened with murderous intent.

"Then I'll show you what happens when you offend me."

Several men in suits climbed out of the wrecked vehicles surrounding the convoy. They raised their machine guns and continued firing at the woman standing in the middle of the street.

Da da da!

The gunfire was relentless.

But Carol simply raised one hand.

The bullets flying toward her were stopped by a swirling force that resembled a violent hurricane. The invisible energy currents deflected every projectile before it could reach her.

"Enough," Carol said quietly.

With a single motion of her arm, the raging wind burst outward.

The attackers were caught instantly.

The tornado-like force lifted them off the ground along with their vehicles, spinning them violently before hurling them across the street.

Hum!

Golden light gathered at Carol's fingertips.

The energy condensed into a narrow beam before firing forward like a spear of light.

Whoosh!

The beam pierced straight through one attacker's chest, killing him instantly.

Then something even stranger happened.

The golden beam refracted through the air as if bouncing off invisible mirrors. It changed direction several times, striking multiple enemies in rapid succession.

Within seconds, several more attackers collapsed.

"Wow!"

Kelly stared in amazement.

Her earlier fear had quickly turned into excitement.

She had never imagined that her cousin—her so-called "big sister"—was this powerful.

In just moments, nearly every attacker lay on the ground.

A few remaining S.H.I.E.L.D agents raised their hands in panic.

"No, Ms. Carol, wait!"

"We're not with them!"

"Yes, we don't know what's going on either. They suddenly started shooting!"

Their faces were filled with confusion and fear.

Carol looked at them carefully.

Her heightened senses allowed her to detect the rhythm of their heartbeats and the subtle fluctuations in their breathing. After a brief moment of observation, she determined they were telling the truth.

The golden light around her fingers slowly faded.

At least some members of S.H.I.E.L.D had not betrayed her.

But that only made the situation more confusing.

What exactly was happening?

Hum!

A helicopter approached from the sky.

It belonged to the Triskelion headquarters.

The moment the attack began, Nick Fury had already received an emergency report.

Inside the aircraft, the bald director frowned deeply.

"What the hell is going on?" he muttered.

The information he had received made no sense.

Some of his own S.H.I.E.L.D agents had apparently joined forces with unknown attackers to assassinate Carol.

Were they insane?

Suddenly a terrifying possibility flashed through Fury's mind.

Hydra.

For some time he had suspected that the infamous organization was resurfacing somewhere in the shadows.

The most dangerous hiding place was often the safest one.

If Hydra had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D itself…

The thought sent a chill down Fury's spine.

"We've secured Ms. Carol and her companion," an agent reported through the headset. "But… there's also another man with them."

Fury blinked.

Another man?

Before he could ask further questions, the helicopter was already approaching the landing platform on top of the Triskelion.

The aircraft touched down smoothly.

Nick Fury had been waiting there for several minutes.

When he saw Carol step out of the helicopter unharmed, he finally relaxed slightly. At the same time, he couldn't help feeling a bit amused.

Whoever organized that assassination attempt must have been completely insane.

Trying to kill Carol Danvers was practically suicide.

Then Fury noticed the man standing beside her.

His expression instantly changed.

Yun Chen.

The emperor of the Kryptonian Empire.

Why was he here?

In truth, the moment Carol was attacked, Yun Chen had already sensed it.

Even across unimaginable distances, the psychic energy connected to Carol had transmitted the danger directly to him.

This ability was similar to how certain super-powered beings could sense threats to their loved ones instantly.

But Yun Chen's perception went far beyond that.

Thanks to the Mind Stone's power, his mental awareness had expanded to a level that bordered on omniscience. Even across countless light-years, he could detect disturbances in Carol's psychic signals.

Although he quickly realized she was not in serious danger, he still chose to act.

With a single step through folded space, Yun Chen crossed the vast distance and appeared beside her.

That was why the two of them had arrived together at S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters.

Carol's anger had not faded.

She turned toward Fury with cold eyes.

"I don't know what your people were thinking when they attacked me," she said sharply. "But I have serious doubts about whether today's S.H.I.E.L.D is the same organization it was thirty years ago."

"If I didn't still respect you personally, I would have already taken action."

The nearby S.H.I.E.L.D agents exchanged nervous glances.

Threatening their own director inside the Triskelion was something none of them had ever witnessed before.

But the confrontation everyone expected never happened.

Nick Fury sighed quietly.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Danvers," he said sincerely. "The situation inside S.H.I.E.L.D may be more complicated than we realized. There are clearly problems within our organization."

"There's a problem?" Carol replied coldly. "Then solve it. Right now."

At that moment, Yun Chen had already pieced together the truth.

From his perspective, the situation was almost amusing.

This was clearly the same scenario that had once unfolded during the events surrounding Hydra's infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The organization had been secretly compromised for years.

"Well," Yun Chen said casually, tapping his temple, "this is actually pretty simple."

His extraordinary memory quickly retrieved a name.

"Alexander Pierce."

Yun Chen looked directly at Fury.

"If I'm not mistaken, your former S.H.I.E.L.D director is actually one of Hydra's leaders."

For a moment, the entire rooftop exploded with shock.

"What?!"

"That's impossible!"

"That's the man who appointed Director Fury!"

"He was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D!"

The surrounding agents stared in disbelief.

Calling Alexander Pierce a Hydra leader sounded like the most ridiculous accusation imaginable.
