Chapter 37 - The Shadow’s Choice

Lucius's heart slammed against his ribs. The Silver Seed in his pocket suddenly burned hot against his side, reacting violently to the overwhelming darkness before them. The air grew thick and freezing, making every breath feel like swallowing ice. The friendly moon spirits that had been dancing around them moments ago now scattered in terror, their soft lights flickering like dying candles.

"Dave, get behind me!" Lucius shouted, stepping forward. His legs still felt weak from the earlier battle, but he forced himself to stand tall, shielding the boy with his body.

Dave's small hand gripped the back of Lucius's cloak so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Brother Lucius… that thing is huge," he whispered, his voice shaking but trying hard to stay brave. "What do we do?"

Captain Harlan drew his cutlass, face grim and determined. "Everyone, form up! This is the real fight! Protect the boy and the seed!"

The massive shadowy treelike figure let out a deafening roar that shook the trees and vibrated through the ground. Black roots thicker than a man's waist erupted from the earth, lashing out like living whips toward the crew. One root slammed into the ground near Dalen, sending him flying backwards with a cry of pain.

Lucius raised his hand. The glowing silver-and-black sword materialised in his grip, its light fighting desperately against the violet darkness. "I won't let you touch him!" he growled, swinging the blade with all his strength. The sword clashed against the incoming roots, sending showers of silver and black sparks flying everywhere.

But the Heart was far stronger than what they had faced before. Every root Lucius cut seemed to grow back thicker and faster. The shadowy, treelike figure's burning eyes focused directly on Dave.

"The boy… the key to your weakness," the ancient voice hissed inside Lucius's mind. "Give him to me, and I will make your suffering quick."

Dave's eyes widened in fear, but he didn't run. Instead, he pulled out the cracked Obsidian Bloom from his bag and held it tightly. "You can't have me! And you can't have my brother!"

The crew fought desperately. Harlan shouted orders while slashing at the roots. "Keep it busy! Lucius, find an opening!"

Lucius's headache returned, sharp and insistent, the shadow inside him reacting violently to the Heart's power. He pushed through the pain and charged forward, his glowing sword cutting a path toward the massive figure.

"Dave, stay close!" he called back.

But the Heart was clever. It ignored the crew and sent a powerful wave of whispering shadows straight into Lucius's mind, trying to drag him back into the freezing void.

Lucius staggered, clutching his head as unbearable pain ripped through him. The shadow inside him surged wildly, fighting for full control. His fingers twitched. His sword arm began to lower against his will. For one horrifying second, he felt himself turning toward Dave, the darkness whispering commands to seize the boy and deliver him to the Heart.

In that moment of desperation, the shadow deep inside Lucius, the same dark entity that had haunted him since the beginning, suddenly rose with unexpected force.

It did not join the Heart.

Instead, it turned against it.

A cold, powerful presence filled Lucius's mind, familiar yet fiercely protective. The shadow's voice, layered with Lucius's own, echoed strongly:

"He is mine… not yours to claim."

The shadow exploded outward like a dark shield, clashing violently with the Heart's influence. Black energy collided with violet energy in a brutal internal war. The massive shadowy figure outside roared in shock and pain as its control over Lucius was violently ripped away.

Lucius's eyes flew open. The crushing pain vanished instantly. He stood tall again, breathing hard, sweat pouring down his face, but completely in control. The glowing sword steadied in his hand, burning brighter than before.

For the first time, the darkness inside him had chosen to protect him, and Dave, rather than consume him.

Dave looked up at Lucius with wide, hopeful, tear-filled eyes. "Did… did it work? Are you okay?"

Lucius placed a trembling hand on the boy's shoulder, his voice rough but filled with deep emotion. "Yes… because of you. The shadow… it protected us this time."

The crew let out a loud cheer as they saw Lucius stand strong once more.

But the battle was far from over.

They now stood at the very edge of the crater. The Silver Seed glowed brighter than ever in Lucius's pocket, pulsing with hope.

Lucius looked down at Dave, exhausted but more determined than ever. "Want to do it together?"

Dave nodded, his small face filled with courage and trust. "Yes!"

They both knelt down at the edge of the dark crater. Lucius dug a small hole with his hands, the soil surprisingly soft and warm. Dave carefully placed the Silver Seed inside, his small hands trembling only slightly. Together they pushed the soft earth back over it, patting it down gently like they were tucking in something precious.

The moment the seed was fully covered, a huge burst of pure, warm light exploded upward!

Golden and silver rays shot into the sky like a new dawn breaking after the longest night. The light spread rapidly across the crater, turning the dead, cracked ground into soft, vibrant grass and beautiful, blooming flowers in every colour. The massive black stone Heart cracked and crumbled with loud echoing sounds, its dark power melting away like ice under the summer sun. The twisting roots that had once choked the land turned green and healthy, reaching upward instead of strangling everything around them.

The ancient voice gave one last weak, desperate cry… then faded away completely, leaving only peaceful silence behind.

All around them, the entire Whisperwood began to heal. Trees that had been twisted and dark straightened up with deep creaking sighs of relief. Flowers bloomed everywhere in vibrant bursts of color. Hundreds of moon spirits poured out from the leaves, dancing and chiming with pure, joyful sounds. The scary whispers that had haunted the forest for so long were gone, replaced by gentle birdsong and the soft rustling of a happy forest finally waking up after years of darkness.

Dave laughed out loud as several moon spirits swirled around him like playful friends. One even landed gently on his head like a glowing hat. His laughter was bright and free, the kind Lucius hadn't heard from the boy in what felt like forever.

Lucius put an arm around Dave's shoulders, smiling tiredly but with real happiness shining in his eyes. "You did it, Dave. Your bravery helped save the whole forest."

Captain Harlan walked over, breathing heavily but wearing a rare warm grin. He ruffled Dave's hair gently. "That was the bravest thing I've seen from anyone, adult or boy. You've got a big heart, lad. We owe you one."

The rest of the crew cheered and clapped loudly for Dave, some of them wiping tears from their eyes. Even the giant tree guardian from earlier gave a deep, friendly rumble in the distance, as if saying thank you.

As the sun began to rise through the now-beautiful trees, painting everything in soft golden light, Lucius looked down at the little boy who had stayed by his side through everything.

"Ready to go home, little one?"

Dave grinned widely, still wearing his moon-spirit hat. "Only if we can come back and visit the nice forest someday."

Lucius chuckled softly. "Deal."

The crew started walking down the hill together, the forest now alive with color, sound, and gentle breezes all around them. The curse was truly brokcolouren. Whisperwood was no longer a place of fear, but a place of magic and wonder once again.

But as they reached the bottom of the hill and the first warm rays of sunlight touched their faces, a cold wind suddenly swept through the trees.

Far away, hidden among the outer shadows of the now-healing forest, Zon stood with a group of his hardened men. He had been watching the entire battle through a cracked crystal glass, his face twisted with fury and dark satisfaction.

"So the boy is the key…" Zon muttered, lowering the glass. "I already knew it. That little survivor from the village is what makes Lucius weak."

One of his men shifted nervously. "Boss, the Heart is gone. They actually healed the forest. What now?"

Zon's lips curled into a cruel smile. He cracked his knuckles slowly.

"We attack here. Right now. While they're tired and celebrating. Lord Dox wants the fifth hero alive… but he never said the boy had to live. Kill the kid first. Once Lucius sees his precious 'little brother' dead, he'll break. Then we take him."

He turned to his men, eyes gleaming with malice.

"Move quietly. Surround them. We strike when they least expect it. No mercy for the boy."

Zon looked back toward Lucius and Dave in the distance, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper.

"This time… you won't escape, Lucius. And your little brother will die first."

The men began moving silently through the trees, weapons drawn, closing in on the unsuspecting crew.

Lucius suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. He stopped walking and looked back toward the darker part of the forest, a deep frown forming on his face.

Something was wrong.

Dave tugged on his cloak. "Brother Lucius…? What's the matter?"

Lucius didn't answer right away. His hand instinctively moved to rest protectively on Dave's shoulder, tension radiating through his body.

The peaceful moment was about to shatter.
