The review was conducted on the morning after Vijayavarman's visit to the south corridor.
Standard practice — after any significant operational moment, the outcomes were documented and assessed against the intended outcomes and the deviations noted with their causes and implications. Twelve years of the practice had made it reflexive, conducted with the same quality of attention as the original planning but with the additional information that only the actual event could provide.
He began with Kubera.
Kubera had been removed before the defection completed. The timing had been correct — the documents placed, the anonymous report filed, the administrative authority triggered at the moment that produced maximum speed in the removal process. Kubera's faction connections had not been activated in time to complicate the removal. The defection had been prevented with ten days remaining in the window Manickam had established.
Outcome: correct.
The courier function.
Established through Manickam's compromised operation, serviced by the Mauryan boy across eight months of reliable delivery. The intelligence produced by the function had been comprehensive and accurate — Vijayavarman's faction movements documented with the specificity that only inside access could produce, the information moving through the channel without detectable disruption until the channel's purpose had been served.
The boy had broken the code on the twenty-ninth delivery.
He had anticipated this. Had designed the code with the specific combination of complexity and solvability that a mind of the boy's demonstrated capability would require. The breaking had occurred within the range he had calculated — not too early, which would have suggested the code was insufficient protection against other parties, and not too late, which would have suggested the boy's capability was less than the assessment indicated.
The breaking had occurred exactly when it should have.
Outcome: correct.
Vijayavarman's investigation.
Had proceeded along the trajectory he had anticipated — the access records, the maid's name, Manickam's questioning, the deduction of the architect's identity, the visit to the south corridor for confirmation. Every step visible through the observation channels that the facility's comprehensive surveillance maintained. Every step anticipated sufficiently in advance to position the response.
The soldiers in the corridor at the exact moment of the name's utterance.
Vijayavarman's understanding of his own position in the situation — three steps behind, the specific comprehensiveness of the realization landing in the south corridor with the quality of something that could not be ununderstood — produced through the precise timing of what he had seen when he turned from the slot.
Outcome: correct.
The boy.
He came to this last, which was not the order that operational logic required — operational logic required assessment in order of significance, and the boy was the most significant element of the review. He came to it last because the other elements were straightforward and the boy was not straightforward and he had learned, in twelve years of this work, to give the non-straightforward elements the space that the straightforward ones did not need.
The boy had performed beyond the range of what the assessment had predicted.
Not in the courier function — the courier function had produced results within the predicted range. Not in the code-breaking — that had been designed for him and had proceeded as designed. In the south corridor. In the conversation with Vijayavarman and what the boy had understood about that conversation before it occurred and what he had done with that understanding.
Both our purposes.
He had given Vijayavarman the name knowing the soldiers were already in the corridor. Had understood that the conversation itself was anticipated and had used that understanding to serve his own purposes while serving the operation's — giving Vijayavarman the confirmation Vijayavarman needed while simultaneously demonstrating to Rakshasa that the boy understood the situation's complete shape.
The demonstration was deliberate.
He had known the soldiers were there and he had given the name anyway, not because the name was unavoidable but because giving it under those conditions communicated something specific to the party who had positioned the soldiers — communicated that the boy was not a mechanism that had been used without understanding, but something that had understood the using and had chosen to participate with open eyes.
This was beyond the range of what the assessment had predicted.
He documented this deviation with the specific care he gave to deviations that implied the assessment's categories were insufficient — not errors in the assessment's execution but limitations in its framework, places where the thing being assessed had exceeded the container the assessment had built for it.
He wrote: exceeds predicted range in category of strategic comprehension. Reassess category.
Then he came to the maid.
He came to her not because the review required it — her role in the operation was documented and assessed and the assessment was complete, the outcome correct, the Kubera removal accomplished through the mechanism that required palace access and the palace access obtained through the relationship the operation had identified and used.
He came to her because he always came to her eventually.
Not immediately. He had learned, in twelve years of this work, that the things you came to eventually were the things that required the most careful handling — the things that did not fit cleanly into the review's operational categories, that existed in the space between what the review could assess and what it could not.
He thought about the maid.
The specific quality of what she had done — not the operational quality, he had already assessed that, the operational quality was the mechanism functioning as designed, palace access obtained through the relationship and used to place the documents and the mechanism working exactly as intended.
The other quality.
She had been taken into a room that did not exist in official records and asked questions she refused to answer and she had not given the name and it had killed her. He had known this was a possible outcome before the operation began — had looked at the access records and the room and the questions and the specific people who would be doing the asking and had calculated the probability of this outcome and had incorporated the probability into the operation's cost assessment.
The cost assessment had been correct.
The probability had resolved in the direction of the higher outcome and the operation had proceeded and the outcome had been achieved and the cost had been paid.
Everything had proceeded correctly.
Something moved across his face.
Not slowly — in the way that things moved across a face when the face did not know it was being observed and had not prepared for the movement, the specific involuntary quality of an expression produced by something that had arrived without being invited and had not been given sufficient time to be managed before it was already there.
He did not examine it.
The practice of twelve years was to set aside the things that did not fit the review's operational categories and return to the work that the categories could accommodate. The work was substantial. The work required attention. The work did not wait for the things that did not fit the categories to be resolved.
He set it aside.
He returned to the review's remaining elements, which were considerable, and he gave them the attention they required, and the morning continued in the administrative district of Pataliputra, and outside his window the city conducted its ordinary functions with the absolute indifference of a place that was too large to notice the specific quality of a face doing something briefly in a room that the city did not know existed.
The review was completed by midday.
All outcomes: correct.
He filed it and moved to the next document on his desk, which was also urgent and also required his attention and which received it fully, completely, without remainder.
The thing that had moved across his face did not move again.
He did not examine it.
