The visitor's parlor at Compasso was on the ground floor.
It was a square room with high ceilings, dark wood paneling, and the kind of furniture that looked expensive and was, in fact, deeply uncomfortable. Katarina had been in here exactly once, on her first day, when she'd checked in. She didn't remember it being this cold.
Eva had peeled off at the staircase. She had something to finish, she'd said, and would catch up with Katarina later.
She straightened her sleeves outside the door, took a breath, and went in.
There were three of them.
Two were standing. They were both women in dark robes, both broad-shouldered, both silent and attentive.
The third one was sitting in front of them.
