[Dunphy House] [Evening] [Phil's Birthday Party]
By the time the party started, Phil had already shown the robot to everyone in the house three times. The robot was parked in the middle of the living room, and Phil held the remote with both hands like he was afraid someone might take it away from him.
"I am telling you, this thing is amazing," Phil said as the robot rolled forward a few inches, stopped, then turned slightly toward the couch. "I saved for months to buy it, and I regret absolutely nothing about this purchase."
Claire stood near the kitchen doorway with her arms crossed. "You spent more on that robot than we spent on our first couch, so I really hope it can do more than scare Stella."
Luke crouched beside the robot and watched it move. "Can it bring food from the kitchen, or does Dad have to train it first?"
Phil pointed at him with the remote. "Training takes time, Luke. You cannot rush greatness, especially when greatness has wheels and a limited battery life."
Alex looked up from the couch and sighed. "Dad, it almost hit the wall five minutes ago, so maybe greatness should start with basic steering."
Phil lowered his voice and leaned toward the robot. "Do not listen to her, Robo-Phil. She is smart, but she does not understand your journey."

//Phil's confession//
Phil sat on the couch with the robot parked on the floor beside his foot. One hand rested on the remote while the other patted the top of the robot like it was a family pet.
"People think I just walked into a store and bought this thing. No. This was a journey."
He nodded seriously.
"Five months. Five whole months."
Phil held up five fingers.
"For five months, every time I wanted to buy something fun, I didn't. Movie snacks? No. Fancy coffee? No. That giant inflatable T-Rex sprinkler I absolutely did not need but definitely wanted? Also no."
He pointed at the robot.
"Because every dollar was going toward this bad boy right here."
Phil smiled proudly while the robot sat completely still.
"Do you know how hard it is for me to save money? I'm a dreamer. I see something cool and immediately start mentally rearranging the garage to make room for it."
He wrapped an arm around the robot and smiled.
"But sometimes in life, patience pays off."
The robot suddenly rolled forward a few inches.
Phil looked down.
"See? He agrees with me."
The robot bumped gently into the coffee table.
Phil stared at it for a second.
"He needs some training before our next robot battle."
//Phil's confession End//
--
Haley walked down the stairs while fixing her earring. "You named it Robo-Phil, and somehow that is the least surprising thing you've done today."
Claire nodded toward Haley. "Thank you for saying that before I had to say it myself."
Phil smiled proudly as the robot rolled in a small circle. "It is a strong name. It tells people who he is and where he comes from."
The doorbell rang before Claire could respond, and Phil turned around with a huge smile. Claire opened the door, and Jay walked in with Gloria and Manny behind him. Jay carried a wrapped box under one arm and handed it to Phil without making a big show of it.
"Happy birthday, Phil," Jay said as Phil took the box from him. "I got you something you might actually use for more than one afternoon."
Phil held the box against his chest and smiled. "Jay, that is one of the warmest things you have ever said to me during a birthday party."
Jay looked at Claire. "Was that warm, because I thought I was just handing him a gift."
Gloria hugged Phil with a large smile. Then said, "Happy birthday, Phil. I helped him choose it, so you know it is not boring."
Phil opened the wrapping and lifted the lid. His eyes widened when he saw the chess board inside. The board had glowing RGB lights around the edges, and the pieces looked clean and expensive.
"Wow," Phil said as he lifted it carefully from the box. "This is a really nice chess board. It lights up and... Wait! The pieces also glow!"
Jay nodded with a small smile. "I figured you like games, and this one will not run into furniture."
Phil looked at the robot, then back at Jay. "That feels like a comment about Robo-Phil, but I am choosing to accept the gift with love."
Manny stepped forward with a small smile. "I also wrote something for your birthday, but Mom said I should wait until everyone has food."
Jay looked at Phil. "I said he should wait until people are too full to leave quickly."
Phil pointed at Manny with the chess board still in his hands. "I look forward to your words, Manny, even if they make me feel less educated in my own house."
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang again. Claire opened it, and Cam came in first with Mitch beside him, holding Lily in his arms. Cam was already smiling.
"Happy birthday, Phil," Cam said as he gave him a big hug. "You look very happy, and I am guessing the robot has something to do with that."
Phil hugged him back and nodded proudly. "The robot is part of it, but the love in this room is also doing some heavy lifting tonight."
Mitch gave Lily to Cam and then took out an envelope from his pocket. "This is from both of us, and before you ask, it does not need batteries or a remote." He gave it to Phil.
Phil opened the envelope and looked inside. "Couple's spa tickets?"
Cam nodded. "For you and Claire. A nice massage, a quiet afternoon, and no children asking where the snacks are kept. We figured you two could use some for yourselves."
Claire took the envelope from Phil and smiled. "This is actually a great gift, and I am going to protect it before Phil asks if the robot can come with us."
Phil looked back at the robot for a second. "I was only going to ask if there was a waiting area."
Mitch shook his head. "That answer is already more than I wanted to hear."
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang again, and Haley checked her phone before anyone moved. Her face changed right away, and she pushed herself off the wall.
"That's Jack, I'll get it," Haley said as she walked quickly toward the door.
Alex watched her go and looked at Luke. "Looks like he's still alive after eating Haley's food."
Haley opened the door. Jack stood outside with a wrapped box under one arm. He smiled when he saw her, and Haley stepped forward to give him a quick hug before letting him inside.
"Hey," Jack said quietly as he hugged her. "You look really good tonight. Did you do your hair?"
Haley smiled as she closed the door and turned around. "Oh, you noticed. You like it?"
"I sure do," He replied.
Jack walked into the living room with Haley beside him, then went straight to Phil and handed him the gift.
"Happy birthday, Mr. Dunphy. Hope you're having a great night."
"Thank you."
Phil started opening the gift with dramatic care, peeling the wrapping paper away like the box might contain a rare artifact. The second he lifted the lid, he froze.
Inside was a brand-new iPad: The third-generation model.
Phil stared at it without moving.
"This is... this is the new iPad."
Jack nodded. "Yeah. I figured you'd have fun with it."
Phil blinked at him. "Fun with it? Jack, I have been watching videos about this thing for weeks."
Luke leaned over his shoulder. "That's the new one, right?"
Phil nodded slowly, still stunned. "I wanted to buy it so badly."
Claire narrowed her eyes. "You were planning to buy an iPad too?"
Phil held the box closer. "I had a plan. It was a good plan. Then Robo-Phil happened."
Alex looked at the robot. "So the robot beat the iPad."
Phil sighed like the memory still hurt. "It was a very hard choice."
Jack smiled. "Then I'm glad I picked the right gift."
Phil looked genuinely touched as he ran his fingers along the edge of the box. "This is amazing. I can use it for real estate, magic videos, family pictures, robot research, maybe even chess." He switched it on and began to fiddle with it with a happy face.
Jay walked over to Jack and held out his hand to Jack. Jack shook it, and Jay gave him a firm pat on the shoulder.
"How are you doing, kiddo?"
"I'm doing good, Mr. Pritchett. Busy, mostly."
Jay studied him for a second. "I heard about that tabloid mess."
The room got a little quieter. Haley moved closer to Jack without making a big deal out of it.
Jack nodded. "Yeah. It was ugly for a while, but it's handled now."
Jay's face hardened a little. "Good. People shouldn't get rich lying about someone's life."
Gloria made a disgusted sound as soon as the tabloid mess came up. "Ay, please. They are lucky this happened here."
Jack glanced at her. "Lucky how?"
"In Colombia?" Gloria said, like the answer was obvious. "A man takes pictures of somebody's family, lies about them, sells it to the news, and thinks he can just go home?"
Jay looked over his glass. "Here we go again." He mumbled.
Gloria shook her head. "No. By morning, nobody knows where he is. Everybody says, 'I don't know, maybe he moved.' Even his own cousin suddenly forgets his phone number."
The room went quiet for half a second.
Phil slowly lowered the iPad box. "That is... very disturbing, Gloria."
Claire stared at Gloria. "Gloria."
"What?" Gloria said, lifting her hands. "I am not saying I would do it. I am saying people often disappear in Colombia when they make trouble with the wrong family."
Haley leaned closer to Jack and whispered, "I love her."
Jack nodded slowly. "I'm a little scared of her."
Cam smiled at Jack, trying to steer the room back before Gloria explained anything else. "For what it's worth, we were proud of all four of you. That whole thing could've gotten ugly fast, and you all handled it really well."
They started chatting and eating appetizers. There were also alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Phil carefully set the iPad on the table, then grabbed the robot remote with fresh excitement. "Wait, what if I can control Robo-Phil with the iPad?"
"That'd be so cool," Luke said as he peeked over Phil's shoulder.
...
As the night went on, Phil's birthday party settled into a comfortable rhythm.
Everyone ate, talked, laughed, and took turns teasing Phil about Robo-Phil while he proudly defended the robot like it was another child.
Claire brought out the cake later, and Phil looked genuinely happy as everyone gathered around to sing for him. He blew out the candles with a huge smile, accepted his slice with unnecessary ceremony, and spent most of dessert showing off the new iPad whenever someone made the mistake of asking about it.
Jay talked about the closet as usual whenever he got the chance. Manny gave his speech, which almost everyone ignored but pretended to listen.
Dinner was loud, warm, and very Dunphy.
Gloria kept asking Haley for her future plans with Jack, Cam and Mitch argued softly over whether Lily had eaten too much frosting, and Luke tried to convince Phil that Robo-Phil needed a birthday hat.
Haley stayed close to Jack for most of the night, laughing into his shoulder whenever her family became too much, while Jack quietly enjoyed being part of it.
Eventually, people began leaving one by one.
Jay, Gloria, and Manny left first, followed by Cam, Mitch, and Lily. Alex disappeared upstairs, Luke wandered off with leftover cake, and Claire started cleaning while Phil kept thanking everyone for coming.
Jack helped for a few minutes before standing up and saying his goodbyes. Phil hugged him with the iPad still tucked under one arm, Claire said goodbye, and Haley walked him outside.
The evening air was cooler when they stepped onto the front path. The house behind them still glowed with warm light, but the street had gone quiet. Jack stopped beside his bike and looked back toward the house with a small smile.
"Today was really fun," Jack said as he stopped beside his bike.
"Yeah, it was," She nodded.
There was a moment of silence.
"So, you're leaving for New York tomorrow, huh?" She asked.
Jack had a book signing event in NY since his Harry Potter series reached a new milestone within two years. The fans kept asking, "What's next for the magic world?" So, Jack decided to give them a little teaser of what's next.
Jack nodded as he adjusted his helmet strap. "Yeah, for a week. I've got a small fan event for the Harry Potter milestone."
Haley said, "That's actually pretty cool."
"It is," Jack said, then gave her a softer look. "I'd love to ask you to come with me, but..."
Haley smiled before he could finish. "Yeah, work is still waiting for me. I already took enough time off."
Jack nodded because he had expected that answer. "I know. Next time?"
"Next time." She nodded while stepping closer. "I'm coming with you."
Jack tilted his head toward her, and Haley leaned in to kiss him good night. It was soft and quick, but she held onto his jacket for an extra second before letting go.
"Text me when you get home," she said as she stepped back from the bike.
"I will," Jack replied, starting the engine with a small smile. "Good night, girlfriend."
Haley giggled a little. "Good night, boyfriend."
Jack laughed under his breath, then pulled away from the curb and rode down the quiet street. Haley stayed outside until his taillight disappeared around the corner, then she went inside.
Inside, Phil was still trying to connect Robo-Phil to the iPad.
Haley shut the door behind her and smiled to herself.
It had been a good night.
