The entrance to Disneyland felt louder as usual.
Kids pulling their parents forward, music drifting through hidden speakers, cast members waving like they actually meant it, and everything somehow brighter than normal life. Even the air felt different, like excitement had a smell.
Haley stood just past the gates, turning slowly in place as she took it all in. "Last time we came, half the rides were closed and Dad kept trying to 'optimize the route' like it was a military mission."
Jack stood beside her, sunglasses on, hands in his pockets, watching her more than the park. "Luckily, today all the rides are open."
She grabbed his hand without thinking, already pulling him forward. "That's great. Let's go. We're not wasting a second."
Jack let himself be dragged along, laughing under his breath.
They didn't get far before Haley stopped again.
"Wait," she said, pulling her phone out. "First photo."
He leaned in beside her, one arm slipping naturally around her waist as she angled the phone.
"Smile," she said.
Jack quickly turned his face and kissed her cheek as she snapped the picture.
Haley pulled the phone back and immediately checked the screen, her expression lighting up even more.
"Oh my God, wait," she said, turning it toward him. "This is perfect."
Jack leaned in to look at the photo. The castle framed them in the background, her smile wide and bright, his lips still pressed against her cheek mid-kiss. It looked natural.
"Yeah," he admitted, nodding once. "That's a good one."
Haley was already tapping her screen. "This is going to be my new wallpaper."
"Already?" he asked, amused.
"Yep," she said, not even looking up. "I love it."
He watched her for a second, smiling to himself, then slipped his hand back into hers. "Alright, Miss Photographer. Where to first?"
Haley looked up, eyes scanning the park like she was mapping it out in real time. "Okay, strategy time," she said. "We hit the big rides early before the lines get insane. Then snacks. Then more rides. Then snacks again."
"Solid plan," Jack said.
"Thanks," she replied seriously. "I'm thinking Space Mountain first."
He nodded. "Let's go."
...
The line for Space Mountain moved faster than Haley expected, though she still bounced slightly on her feet the entire time.
"This is the one where it's dark, right?" she asked.
"Pretty sure," Jack said. "So if you scream, no one will see it."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "I'm pretty sure you're going to scream first."
He laughed. "We'll see."
When the ride launched, the world disappeared into darkness almost instantly. The twists came fast, sharp turns that felt like they came out of nowhere. Haley grabbed his arm halfway through, laughing and yelling at the same time.
"This is insane!"
Jack laughed too, the sound getting lost in the rush of wind and noise. "You're the one who picked it!"
By the time it ended, both of them stepped out slightly disoriented, adrenaline still buzzing.
Haley pushed her hair back, breathless and grinning. "Okay… worth it."
"Yeah," Jack agreed, stretching his shoulders. "Definitely worth it."
She grabbed his hand again. "Next."
...
Thunder Mountain came next, the fast turns and sudden drops pulling more laughter out of her, and Jack found himself leaning into it just as much. At one point, she threw her hands up, shouting something that got lost in the noise, and he followed without hesitation.
By the time they stepped off, Haley was laughing so hard she had to steady herself against him.
"I think I lost my voice already," she said.
"You've got plenty left," he replied. "I believe in you."
She nudged him lightly. "You're so supportive."
...
They stopped for snacks after that, grabbing churros and drinks before finding a spot to sit.
Haley took a bite, eyes widening slightly. "Okay, this is actually amazing."
Jack nodded. "Theme park food is underrated."
"Or we're just starving," she said.
"Also possible."
She snapped another quick photo, this time of their hands holding churros with the park blurred behind them.
"This is going in the album," she said.
"How many photos are we at now?" he asked.
She checked. "Twenty-three."
He blinked. "Already?"
"It's called documenting memories," she said confidently. "You should try it."
"I'm in the memories," he replied. "That counts."
She smiled at that, softer this time.
...
They wandered through the park after, slower now, letting themselves take it in.
At one point, Haley spotted a character walking by and grabbed his arm again. "Wait, wait, we need a photo."
"With Goofy?" he asked.
"Yes, with Goofy," she said. "This is important for childhood healing."
He didn't argue.
A few minutes later, they stood side by side with Goofy between them, Haley laughing mid-photo while Jack tried and failed to keep a straight face.
"Okay, that one's for my dad," she said after checking it.
"He'll love it," Jack said.
"He's going to frame it," she replied. "I'm not even joking."
...
By the afternoon, the pace had shifted again.
They found themselves near the quieter parts of the park, the energy still there but softer now. Haley leaned lightly against him as they walked, her head brushing his shoulder for a second.
"This is my favorite part," she said.
"The rides?" he asked.
She shook her head. "No. This."
He looked down at her. "Walking around?"
"Being here with you," she said simply.
He didn't respond right away. His hand tightened slightly around hers instead.
"Yeah," he said after a moment. "Same."
...
Lunch came a little later than expected.
They had meant to grab something quick and get back to the rides, but somewhere between another photo stop and Haley insisting on checking out a small boutique store, time slipped.
By the time they reached one of the larger restaurants inside the park, the place was buzzing with people. Families filled the tables, trays stacked high with food that looked far more elaborate than typical theme park snacks. The menu screens overhead flashed options that felt closer to fine dining than anything Haley had planned for.
She slowed as they stepped inside, her eyes scanning the place.
"Okay… this looks expensive," she said quietly, leaning a little closer to Jack as if the prices might hear her.
Jack replied. "It's Disneyland. Everything is expensive."
"That's not comforting," she replied, still staring at the board. Her fingers tightened slightly around her phone. "Maybe we should just grab something smaller again. Like… another churro or hotdog."
He shook his head lightly. "We've been running around all day. Let's sit down and eat properly."
Haley hesitated for a second longer, then looked at him. "Jack…"
He caught the tone immediately. "Hey," he said, softer now. "Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"That thing where you start holding back because you think it's too much."
She opened her mouth, then closed it again.
"I brought you here," he continued. "This date was my idea, and I want my girl to enjoy her day without holding back. So just order what you want. Not what you think you should want."
Haley studied his face for a moment, searching for any hint that he didn't mean it.
She didn't find any.
"…anything?" she asked carefully.
"Anything," he confirmed.
A small smile started to form. "Okay… then I'm getting the pasta. And maybe that dessert thing with way too much chocolate."
Jack nodded once. "Good choice."
"And a drink," she added quickly. "A fancy one."
"Go for it."
She exhaled, the hesitation finally dropping off her shoulders. "Alright. I'm doing it."
They ordered, found a table near a window, and settled in.
The food took a little time, but when it arrived, Haley's eyes lit up immediately.
"Okay, this looks illegal," she said, staring at her plate.
Jack laughed under his breath. "Illegal?"
"It's too good for a theme park," she said, already picking up her fork.
She took a bite, then froze for half a second.
"OMG."
"Good?"
She nodded quickly, already going in for another bite. "This is so good."
Jack leaned back slightly, watching her more than his own plate.
"Slow down, there's no hurry."
"I'm starving," she said between bites. "And this is amazing. Don't judge me."
They ate like that for a while, conversation slipping in and out between bites.
At one point, Haley leaned back in her chair, letting out a satisfied breath. "Okay… that was worth every dollar you spent."
Jack nodded, watching her satisfied expression. He said, "Yeah, it is."
...
After lunch, they stepped back out into the park, the sun a little lower now, but the energy still alive.
Haley stretched her arms slightly as they walked. "Okay. Back to rides."
Jack nodded, falling into step beside her.
They didn't get far before he noticed it.
It was subtle at first. The way her steps slowed just a fraction. The way she shifted her weight every few seconds like she was adjusting something.
Jack looked down at her shoes. They were new and had heels. He looked back up at her.
"You okay?" he asked.
"Yeah," she said immediately.
He didn't look convinced. "You sure?"
"I'm fine," she insisted, a little too quickly. "Why?"
He tilted his head slightly. "You're walking weird."
"I am not walking weird," she said, almost offended.
"You are."
"I am not."
He gave her a look.
She held it for a second, then looked away. "Okay, maybe a little."
Jack stopped walking.
Haley took another step before realizing he wasn't beside her anymore. She turned back. "What?"
"Your feet hurt."
"No, they don't."
"Haley."
"They don't hurt that bad," she corrected quickly. "It's just… normal walking pain."
"Normal walking pain," he repeated.
"Yes."
He raised an eyebrow.
Haley sighed. "Okay, maybe slightly above normal walking pain. But it's fine. I'm not ruining today over shoes."
Jack watched her for a second, then nodded toward a nearby bench. "Sit."
"I don't need to sit."
"Sit."
She hesitated, then let out a small huff and walked over, dropping onto the bench.
"Wait here," Jack turned and walked off before she could ask anything else.
Haley watched him go, frowning slightly. "Where is he going…"
A few minutes passed.
She shifted on the bench, stretching her legs out a little, finally letting herself feel how much her feet actually hurt.
"…okay, maybe that was a bad shoe choice," she admitted under her breath.
Jack came back a minute later, holding a small bag.
Haley looked up. "What's that?"
He didn't answer right away. He just sat down beside her and set the bag between them.
"Open it."
She narrowed her eyes slightly, then reached over and pulled it open.
Inside were two pairs of fluffy theme park slippers.
Haley blinked. "…are you serious?"
Jack picked up the pink pair and held them out to her. "Try them."
She stared at them for a second, then at him. "You bought us matching fluffy shoes."
"Yep," he said. "Try them on. They are really soft."
She let out a laugh she couldn't hold back. "These are ridiculous."
"Your feet won't think so."
She hesitated for a second longer, then slipped off her shoes and pulled the fluffy ones on.
The reaction was immediate.
"Oh… okay," she said, her voice shifting. "Wait."
She stood up, testing her weight. Her feet didn't hurt anymore, and the shoes were really soft.
"…okay, these are amazing."
Jack smiled slightly, slipping on the blue pair himself. "Told you."
Haley looked down at their feet, then back up at him, shaking her head with a grin.
"We look so goofy."
"Maybe," he said. "But who cares as long as we are comfortable?"
She took a few steps forward, then turned back toward him, her smile softer now.
"…thank you."
Jack smiled as he walked over, put her arms around her waist, and then they resumed their fun day once again...
