[Preston Boutique]
Downstairs, the lobby felt strangely calm compared to the storm upstairs.
//Phil's Confession//
Phil leaned forward, elbows on his knees, hands clasped like he was about to pitch a house that definitely had foundation issues.
"Okay, so... fun fact about me," he began, nodding slightly. "I love surprises. Big fan. Birthdays, magic tricks, finding money in old pants…"
He paused.
"…finding out your daughter secretly plans to give you five thousand dollars and an all-expenses-paid trip to Miami?"
He blinked.
"That one… hits different."
Phil let out a small, awkward laugh, then scratched the back of his neck.
"Because, uh…" he lowered his voice like it was a confession booth. "Claire and I had a plan. And not a fun plan. Not like 'let's surprise Haley with support and unconditional love.'"
He winced.
"No, no. More like… 'let's take the prize from Haley.'"
He nodded slowly, like he couldn't believe he was saying it out loud.
"Yeah. The tickets? Gone. The money? Straight to savings. Responsible parenting, right? Very… adult. Very… legally defensible."
A beat.
"…very terrible."
Phil sighed, shoulders dropping.
"I mean, I've had a rough couple of months, okay? Real estate has been… let's call it 'emotionally humbling.' Houses aren't selling, buyers are ghosting me, which I thought only happened in dating, but apparently not, and suddenly five thousand dollars starts to sound like a miracle."
He looked off, softer now.
"But Haley didn't see it that way."
A small smile tugged at his face.
"She saw it as… something to give us."
He swallowed.
"And I didn't even see that coming. Which is ironic, because I literally make a living anticipating people's needs."
Phil shook his head slightly.
"I keep thinking… when did she start thinking like that? When did she go from 'Dad, can I borrow money?' to 'Dad, I want to help you'?"
His voice dipped, more honest now.
"And why was my first instinct to take that away from her?"
A pause.
"Not because I don't trust her…"
He exhaled.
"…but because somewhere along the way, I got used to thinking she needed protecting more than she needed believing."
Phil looked back toward the camera, eyes a little glassy but still holding that familiar warmth.
"And now she's upstairs trying to prove she's good at something…"
He nodded once.
"And I almost made sure she didn't even get the chance to enjoy it."
A small beat.
"…so yeah. If there's a 'Worst Supporting Dad' award, I feel like I'm… nominated."
..
//Claire's Confession//
Claire sat upright, arms crossed tightly at first—classic Claire posture—but it didn't last long. Her shoulders dropped as she exhaled.
"Okay, I need to say this out loud, because if I don't, I'm going to keep pretending this is just… good parenting," she said, already shaking her head.
"It's not."
She uncrossed her arms, leaning forward slightly.
"We were going to take it."
No sugarcoating. No softening.
"The trip. The money. All of it."
Claire pressed her lips together briefly.
"And I had reasons. Good ones." She nodded, convincing herself for half a second. "Phil's been struggling. We have responsibilities. We are so tired that we need a real break. And Haley's young, she's impulsive, she..."
She stopped herself.
"…she's grown."
That one sat heavier.
"And I didn't adjust."
Claire looked down for a moment, then back up.
"There's this thing that happens when you're a parent… you build this version of your kid in your head. And even when they change, even when they prove they've changed…"
She gave a small, humorless smile.
"…you keep reacting to the old version. Because it's safer."
Her voice softened.
"Haley's been irresponsible before. She's made bad choices. She's needed help."
A beat.
"So I kept treating her like the girl who needed help…"
Claire's eyes flickered, something more vulnerable breaking through.
"…instead of the one who was trying to give it."
She swallowed, clearly not loving this realization.
"And when Gloria told me very loudly, I might add, that Haley wanted to give us the prize as an anniversary gift…"
Claire let out a quiet breath, shaking her head.
"I didn't feel proud."
A pause.
"I felt… ashamed."
She looked off slightly, voice quieter now.
"Because my first instinct as her mother wasn't 'look at how generous she is.' It was... How do I control this situation?"
Claire sighed.
"That's not great."
Another beat.
"And the worst part?" she added, almost reluctantly. "If we hadn't found out… if she had won and handed it to us…"
Claire's expression tightened.
"I would've taken it."
Silence lingered for a moment.
"And she would've been happy about it... Or, I might've taken it and stopped her dreams before she could gift it to us, and she'd have hated us for that..."
Claire shook her head slowly.
"That's… that's the part I can't get past."
She looked straight.
"She believes in us. Enough to give something like that away."
A small, conflicted breath.
"And we..." She shook her head.
Claire leaned back slightly, her voice steadier but still carrying the weight.
"She's upstairs right now, trying to prove she's more than what people expect her to be."
A pause.
"And we almost proved the opposite."
She glanced off toward where the elevators were, as if she could somehow see through floors.
"…so yeah. Not feeling great about our parenting today."
A small, honest beat.
"When she walks out of that room… win or lose…"
Claire's jaw set slightly, something more resolved now.
"I'm going to hug her and maybe... this once, I'll let her go to Disneyland with Jack. She doesn't know that anyone over 14 can go there alone without a guardian and considering Jack is a celebrity, I'm sure his parents will send guards with him. As for Miami..."
She took a deep breath.
"...I think I'll accept Haley's gift. And the money, we'll put it in her name."
//Confessions END//
...
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.
Haley stepped out.
For a brief second, she just stood there, adjusting to the quieter air of the lobby after the pressure of the evaluation room. Her posture was straight, her chin lifted just enough, just like Gloria had told her. There was something different about her now... She seemed to have gained more self-confidence.
Phil noticed it first. He rose from his seat almost immediately, his eyes scanning her face like he was trying to read the result before she even spoke.
Claire stood a second later, her hands tightening slightly before she let them relax at her sides.
They both walked toward her at the same time.
Haley saw them coming and walked toward them, her grip tightening just a little on her bag strap before she let it go. They stopped in the middle of the lobby. For a moment, none of them spoke. The silence stretched just enough to feel full.
Phil broke first.
"Well?" he asked, trying to sound casual, but the anticipation in his voice gave him away completely.
Haley looked between them.
Then she smiled.
Not the nervous kind she had been wearing earlier. This one came naturally, settling into place like it belonged there.
"I won," she said.
Phil blinked once.
Then twice.
"Wait… you mean… like… first place won?" he asked, his voice climbing with every word.
Haley let out a small laugh, nodding. "Yeah. First place."
Phil didn't hold back after that. He stepped forward and pulled her into a tight hug, lifting her slightly off the ground without even realizing it.
"Oh my God, that's my girl," he said, his voice full and bright. "You did it. You actually did it."
Haley laughed against his shoulder, hugging him back just as tightly.
'That's my girl,' Claire thought as she stepped in next, and when Phil let go, she wrapped her arms around Haley without hesitation. This hug was different. It lingered longer, steadier, like she was trying to say something without using words.
"I'm so proud of you," Claire said quietly, her voice soft but firm.
Haley felt it.
Not just the words, but the way they were said.
'This feels good. Now, no one will compare me to Alex and I'm not the dumb kid in the house anymore.' Haley thought.
She pulled back slightly, looking at her mom, and for a second, there was something unspoken between them. Then Haley smiled again, lighter this time.
"It gets better," she said.
Phil perked up instantly. "There's more?"
Haley nodded, shifting her bag slightly as she spoke. "The designers really liked the photos. Like… really liked them. They want to use them in their boutiques."
Claire's eyes widened immediately, her excitement cutting through everything else. "Wait, what do you mean use them?" she asked, stepping a little closer. "You mean like on the posters and displays and everything?"
Haley gave a small shrug, though there was a spark in her eyes. "I don't know all the details yet. They said you should talk to them directly."
Claire blinked, processing that, and then her expression shifted into something brighter, almost disbelieving.
"Me?" she asked.
Haley smiled, a little amused now. "Yeah, you. Who knows, Mom… maybe you can even become a professional model."
Phil let out a soft whistle, clearly impressed. "Okay, wow. This just keeps getting better."
Haley reached into her bag and pulled out her phone, glancing down at it for a second. There were too many notifications. "I already texted Gloria, Uncle Cam, and Mitchell," she said as she unlocked the screen. "They're probably freaking out right now."
Phil chuckled. "Oh, they definitely are. Gloria's probably already planning your victory party."
Haley laughed softly, but then her expression settled again, calmer now. She looked between her parents, taking them in for a moment like she was grounding herself in the reality of what had just happened.
"I actually did it," she said, quieter this time.
Claire placed a hand gently on Haley's arm. "You didn't just do it," she said. "You earned it."
Phil nodded beside her, his smile warm and steady. "Yeah. No 'cute effort' award here. This is the real thing."
Haley let out a small breath, something in her shoulders finally loosening.
For the first time since that morning, she wasn't second-guessing herself...
...She just felt proud.
