He found Cassandra in the corridor outside the library.
Not inside — outside, standing at the window at the end of the passage that looked west. She was there when he turned the corner and he stopped for a moment before she heard him.
She was very still.
'She has already spoken to Paris,' he thought. 'He came to her and she said what she felt and now she is standing at the west-facing window.'
He came and stood beside her.
Below, the harbor. The barrier pilings. A ship coming in from the south.
She said: "He was here."
"Yes."
"He asked me what I feel."
"What did you tell him."
"The truth. What I feel." She looked at the ship below. "He listened the way Paris listens — completely, without interrupting, and then asked one question."
"What question."
"He asked: if you were me, what would you do." She paused. "I told him I could not answer that. He said: I know. I wanted to hear you say it anyway." She turned from the window. "He is going."
"Yes."
"Not might. Is."
"Yes."
