Chapter 37 Dreamer
King's Landing, Red Keep, Maegor's Holdfast.
This square fortress located in the center of the Red Keep, using twelve-foot-thick walls and a dry moat with iron spikes as its armor, firmly protected itself in the very center of the Red Keep. This fortress, named after the former "Tyrant" King Maegor I Targaryen, was the residence of the King and members of the Royal Family.
The night was just right at this moment.
Outside the chambers of the Princes and Princesses, Aegon the Elder, the eldest son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower (referred to as "Aegon the Elder" below to distinguish him from Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen's son Aegon), was sitting quietly by the window, his face flushed. The young boy had beautiful silver medium-length hair and could be considered exceptionally handsome, but seemed a bit too fond of wine. There were already several empty wine jugs on the table in front of him, and Aegon the Elder was still swirling the silver liquid in his cup. His pale purple eyes quietly watched the moonlight outside the window, not the usual haziness of a drunkard, but rather quite clear.
"Aegon, what are you doing?" A woman's voice, full of disbelief yet with a hint of relief, came from the other side of the corridor. Aegon the Elder quickly averted his gaze, downed a mouthful of fine wine, and slumped directly onto the chair.
Queen Alicent Hightower ran over angrily, looked at her son slumped in the chair, reeking of alcohol, and just as she was about to say something, she glanced at the closed door behind Aegon. She took a deep breath and glared fiercely at her son. In the end, she said nothing and left with a flick of her sleeve.
Seeing his mother walk away, Aegon the Elder, who had been pretending to be asleep, climbed out of the chair, wondering what he was thinking.
Finally, he grabbed the wine jug again and gulped it down.
He didn't even glance at the door behind him.
In the room, his newlywed wife, Princess Helaena Targaryen, was lying on the bed beside the fireplace, tightly wrapped in a quilt. The fireplace and brazier beside her were burning, the flames flickering, faintly revealing Princess Helaena's slightly rounded face.
The maiden was fast asleep.
In her dream, Helaena seemed to have turned into a happy little bird, flying freely in the flames. Here, there was no mother who nagged all day, no cold grandfather Ser Otto Hightower, and no brother and husband Aegon with whom she had a complicated relationship, nor her gloomy little brother Prince Aemond Targaryen.
She flew through the burning dream. Of course, from her perspective, this dream wasn't burning with flames, but was full of flowers, vines, and ancient trees reaching to the sky. A kind large bear had dragon scales on its body. It wore a crown and smiled as it watched the little bird fly around it, but its body was firmly pinned down by countless invisible long swords.
She looked worriedly at the Iron Throne piercing the large bear, and then saw three stubborn chipmunks. One was hopping on a tree, but could never get close to the sword-bearing Throne. One ran wildly toward the woods where the buck was, but was bitten into a pond by a one-eyed wolf. One stood blankly in the middle of the woods, not noticing the venomous snakes and crows surrounding it.
The little bird tried to warn them, but ultimately achieved nothing and could only regretfully be gently blown by the wind toward the depths of the woodland.
She saw a hint of crimson. The red extended upward, becoming deeper and deeper, finally evolving into profound black. The little bird saw the huge castle before her.
This was the third time she had seen this castle. The previous two times, the dream had ended right before the gate. But this time, the castle gate was wide open.
So she flew inside.
Blood, spilled blood everywhere. Venomous snakes were broken into several pieces, vultures were pierced by spears, and a green dragon wailed in the flames.
"Ah!"
The maiden covered her mouth in the pool of blood. This was the first time she had dreamed of such a bloody scene.
"Girl, dragon, villain, curse, life." The green dragon rolling in the flames roared loudly.
Then it was pressed back into the flames by a silver dragon claw.
The silver dragon slowly revealed its massive form from the sea of blood in the castle. It looked down at the maiden who was tightly hugging herself. Not a speck of blood stained its body.
"This is the third time you've intruded into my dream, Targaryen Dreamer. Has no one taught you that it is dangerous to intrude into a sorcerer's dream to peer into the future? My..." The silver dragon thought for a moment in a human-like manner. "Niece."
Helaena quickly searched her mind to confirm who the silver dragon before her might represent. Their new cousin, Dragonzel Varezes, who had visited them recently, was only a few years older than her, technically her uncle by blood. When he arrived at King's Landing, he was riding Vermithor, the second largest dragon in the world at that time. On that day, when Vhagar and Vermithor danced in the sky, the old people of King's Landing even said it was as if they saw two Black Dread reapers dancing in the air. Dragonzel and his two younger brothers, who were granted an audience, were all handsome and very polite. They gave Aegon the Elder several boxes of fine wine and jewels by the box, gave her several boxes of books and silk brocade, and prepared jewels, weapons, and books for Prince Aemond Targaryen and the young Prince Daeron Targaryen in Oldtown.
Helaena thought they were quite nice. But she didn't know what a sorcerer was, only that some symbolic things in her dreams would soon become reality.
"I am very sorry, Dragonzel." Helaena hurriedly lifted her skirt hem and bowed slightly to the silver dragon. "I do not know what you mean by Dreamer or anything else. If I have disturbed you, I am very sorry."
The dragon slowly lowered its head. "Have the Targaryens abandoned magical knowledge to this extent? Your ancestors relied on the gift of Dreamers to escape the Doom, something many once-great Dragonlord families yearned for. But now you are so dismissive of a new Dreamer. What a waste of natural gifts."
The dragon stretched out its neck, went around the maiden, and then pulled back. "If you don't want to have these strange dreams, you should try to sleep in a cooler place. If you want to master this ability, hmph." The silver dragon snorted coldly, but continued, "You can also continue to connect to my dream in this way."
"If you can withstand the magical impact within the dream of a Blood Witch and Dragon Knight."
Only then did Helaena realize her body was covered in bloodstains. She was instantly pushed out of the castle by an invisible force, and the originally lush forest suddenly began to burn.
"Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo."
Helaena woke up from her sleep, covered in sweat. She looked at the empty space beside her and decisively extinguished the brazier and fireplace by the bed, tightly hugging the quilt.
She seemed to be thinking about something.
The silver dragon was still watching the wide-open castle gate in the dream. The gate slowly closed, and a human face suddenly twisted out of the bone-white wooden gate. Bright red tears slowly flowed from where the human eyes should be, but could only stay on the human face.
The human face silently watched the silver dragon.
"Anomaly." The human face suddenly emitted a voice that was indistinct, but Dragonzel could hear it clearly. "You are an external anomaly."
"The Old Gods of Westeros?" Dragonzel recognized this presumptuous fellow who had also intruded into his dream.
The human face did not answer. "We will meet again when the time is right. I hope you remember your purpose."
The human face and the dream simultaneously receded like a tide.
Dragonzel opened his eyes. His new attendant, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, was cleaning his Valyrian steel armor "Dragon Knight" with sand, his face full of envy.
"Brother, Lord Dondarrion has arrived. We can set off now."
Valarr, fully armed, pushed open the gate and shouted loudly.
