Elara froze beneath Hawthorne University's astronomy tower. The voice sounded exactly like her father's, who had been dead for three years.


Beside her, Adrian Vale raised his lantern. "Please tell me you didn't just answer a haunted wall."


The ancient stones shuddered. A thin black line appeared between two bricks, spreading until it formed the outline of a door.


Three silver symbols glowed across its surface.


Elara pulled the folded notes from her pocket. Her father had drawn those same symbols beside a warning:


Adrian read the words over her shoulder.


"So naturally, you're going to open it."


Beyond it lay a staircase descending into darkness. Blue flames floated above each step, illuminating walls covered in names. Elara recognized one immediately.


Adrian pointed farther down the wall. "Look at the dates."


Every name had two dates beside it: a birth date and a future date.


Elara reached for the door, but a pale hand shot through the darkness and seized her wrist.


A figure dragged itself into the light, wearing a torn university uniform and a face with no eyes.


Adrian swung his lantern. The creature recoiled, releasing Elara.


They raced up the staircase as the creature shrieked behind them. Elara reached the entrance and slammed her hand against the silver symbols.


A black symbol had appeared beneath her skin.


Elara watched it pulse like a second heartbeat.


From somewhere beneath the tower, a voice answered:
