The night was unusually quiet.
Lily stood by the large window of the penthouse, staring at the city below. The bright lights stretched endlessly across the skyline, but instead of feeling amazed, she felt uneasy.
This world was not hers.
Everything here was too perfect… too expensive… too powerful.
And at the center of it all was Darius Romano.
The man who had saved her life.
Lily wrapped her arms around herself as the memory of that night replayed in her mind.
The dark alley.
The men chasing her.
The fear that she might not survive.
Then Darius had appeared like a storm.
Cold. Dangerous. Unstoppable.
Her thoughts were interrupted when the door opened behind her.
Lily turned slightly.
Darius walked into the penthouse, removing his dark coat slowly. His sharp eyes immediately noticed her standing by the window.
"You're still awake," he said in his deep, calm voice.
Lily shrugged.
"I couldn't sleep."
Darius loosened his tie and walked toward the bar table. He poured himself a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid catching the light.
"You should rest," he said without looking at her.
"Most people sleep at this hour."
Lily watched him carefully.
"Most people don't live with a mafia boss."
Darius paused.
Then a faint smirk appeared on his lips.
"Fair point."
He took a slow sip of his drink.
Lily hesitated before speaking again.
"Darius… can I ask you something?"
He leaned against the counter.
"You just did."
"Why did you really save me?"
The question hung heavily in the air.
Darius stared into his glass for a moment before answering.
"You were in danger."
"That's not the real reason," Lily said quietly.
Darius looked up at her.
"You're very persistent."
"I just want the truth."
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Darius sighed and placed his glass down.
"When I found you that night," he said slowly, "you reminded me of someone."
Lily blinked.
"Who?"
Darius's expression darkened slightly.
"My sister."
Lily was surprised.
"You have a sister?"
"I had one."
The way he said it made Lily's chest tighten.
"What happened to her?"
Darius's jaw clenched.
"The same thing that almost happened to you."
The room fell silent.
Lily suddenly understood.
He hadn't saved her because she was special.
He saved her because he couldn't save someone else.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Darius looked away.
"Don't be."
"But you still brought me here," Lily said. "You could have just helped me and left."
Darius looked back at her.
"In my world, loose ends become problems."
"So I'm a loose end?"
"No," he said calmly.
"You're someone under my protection."
Before Lily could respond, Darius's phone suddenly vibrated on the table.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression instantly turned cold.
"What is it?" Lily asked nervously.
Darius answered the call.
"Yes."
Lily watched him closely as he listened.
His eyes darkened.
"When?" he asked sharply.
Silence followed.
Then he spoke again.
"Send my men immediately."
He ended the call.
The tension in the room was suddenly heavy.
"What happened?" Lily asked.
Darius picked up his glass again but didn't drink.
"My enemies are becoming curious."
Lily felt a chill run through her body.
"Curious about what?"
"About you."
Her heart skipped.
"Me?"
"Yes."
"But why?"
Darius stepped closer to her.
"Because you're living here."
Lily shook her head.
"That doesn't make sense."
"In my world," Darius said quietly, "anything connected to me becomes a target."
Lily felt her stomach twist.
"So those men that attacked me…"
"They were watching me," Darius finished.
Fear slowly crept into Lily's chest.
"You mean I was just in the wrong place?"
Darius didn't answer.
But his silence said enough.
Lily looked down.
"I don't want to cause you trouble."
"You're not."
"But if your enemies are looking for me—"
"They won't find you."
His voice was firm.
Lily looked up at him.
"You sound very sure."
Darius stepped closer, his presence suddenly overwhelming.
"That's because anyone who touches what belongs to me… regrets it."
Lily's heart skipped.
Belongs to me.
The words echoed in her mind.
"I don't belong to you," she said softly.
Darius smirked slightly.
"No."
"But you're still under my protection."
"And what's the price for that?"
For a moment, Darius looked amused.
"Price?"
"Nothing in your world is free," Lily said.
Darius studied her carefully.
"You're smarter than I expected."
"So?"
"So the price," he said calmly, "is simple."
"What is it?"
"You stay alive."
Lily blinked.
"That's it?"
"For now."
Before she could ask more questions, Darius checked his watch.
"I have to leave."
Lily frowned.
"Leave? It's almost midnight."
"That's when business begins."
"Dangerous business?"
Darius smirked again.
"All my business is dangerous."
He walked toward the door.
But Lily suddenly grabbed his arm.
"Darius."
He stopped.
"What?"
"Be careful."
For a moment, he looked surprised.
"You're worried about me?"
"Maybe."
Darius looked down at her hand still holding his arm.
"You shouldn't worry about men like me."
"Why?"
"Because men like me don't deserve it."
Lily slowly released his arm.
"You saved my life," she said quietly.
"That's enough reason."
Darius studied her face for a moment.
Then something in his expression softened slightly.
"Lock the door after I leave," he said.
"And don't open it for anyone except my guards."
Lily nodded.
"Is it really that dangerous?"
Darius held her gaze.
"Yes."
Then he opened the door.
But before leaving, he turned back.
"Lily."
"Yes?"
"If anything happens…"
"Call you."
He nodded.
Then he disappeared into the hallway.
The door closed behind him.
Lily stood alone in the quiet penthouse again.
She walked slowly back to the window.
Somewhere out there in the dark city, Darius was heading toward danger.
And she couldn't stop thinking about him.
Lily sighed softly.
"What kind of life did I just walk into?"
Deep down…
She already knew the answer.
A life full of danger.
Secrets.
And a man powerful enough to destroy anyone who threatened her.
But the most dangerous part of all…
Was that Lily was slowly starting to trust him.
