Chapter 69 - Chapter 69 - The Unwritten Future

The sky above the frozen city shimmered like cracked glass.

Layer upon layer of different timelines hovered in the air.

A peaceful skyline.

A ruined one.

A flooded one.

A dark version where half the buildings were gone.

Thousands of futures.

All waiting to become real.

And Ethan stood at the center of them.

The glow around his body pulsed stronger with every second.

The chronal officer checked the countdown again.

TEMPORAL CONVERGENCE COMPLETION — 07:41

Her voice was tight.

"…You don't have much time."

Mira stepped closer to Ethan.

"You really thinking about this?"

He didn't answer immediately.

His eyes were fixed on the sky.

Because the visions were clearer now.

He wasn't just seeing timelines.

He was feeling them.

Millions of lives.

Millions of choices.

Every version of the world carrying its own story.

Some were beautiful.

Children playing in parks.

Cities thriving.

People laughing.

Others were nightmares.

War.

Empty streets.

Dark skies.

Liya moved beside him quietly.

"…What do you see?"

Ethan spoke softly.

"Everything."

"Every possible tomorrow."

Liya swallowed.

"Is there a good one?"

"…A few."

Mira smirked slightly.

"Humanity batting maybe ten percent success rate."

"Not terrible."

The officer shook her head.

"That's not the problem."

She pointed toward the sky.

"The universe wants Ethan to select one of those timelines."

"Not create something new."

Mira added,

"Yeah."

"Reality doesn't like improvisation."

Ethan finally looked down at his glowing hands.

"…But every one of these timelines has something wrong."

Liya frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"In some, the tower still falls."

"In others, the train crash happens."

"In some… we never even meet."

Liya's heart skipped.

"…What?"

Ethan looked at her.

"In thousands of futures…"

"…you die."

The silence hit like a shockwave.

Mira's smile disappeared.

The officer looked away.

But Ethan continued.

"And in most timelines…"

"…the loop never stops."

Liya whispered,

"…So there's no perfect future."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Not one the universe created."

Mira folded her arms.

"So you're going to design one yourself."

The glow around Ethan brightened again.

"…Yes."

The officer stepped forward quickly.

"Wait."

"You need to understand the risk."

Ethan looked at her.

"If you create a new timeline…"

"…it might destroy every existing one."

"Billions of possibilities erased."

Mira added bluntly,

"And if you screw it up…"

"…we could erase reality itself."

Liya squeezed Ethan's hand.

But she didn't tell him to stop.

Instead she asked quietly,

"…Can you do it?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

The energy inside him roared louder.

He could feel the structure of time now.

Past.

Present.

Future.

All woven together like threads.

And right now—

He was holding the center knot.

"…I think so."

The countdown continued.

05:02

Above the city, the ghost timelines flickered violently.

Reality was losing patience.

Mira checked her device.

"…The convergence is speeding up."

The officer nodded.

"The system is trying to force a selection."

Liya looked up at the sky again.

"…Then we don't have time."

Ethan opened his eyes.

The glow around him exploded outward.

A massive wave of blue light rolled through the frozen city.

Every suspended object shimmered.

The ghost timelines reacted instantly.

They began collapsing inward.

Toward Ethan.

Mira whispered,

"…Oh wow."

"He's actually doing it."

The officer's device started screaming warnings.

TEMPORAL CORE OVERRIDE DETECTED

UNAUTHORIZED REALITY CREATION

The sky cracked again.

The ghost cities shattered like mirrors.

Fragments of futures floating everywhere.

Ethan raised his hand slowly.

"…If the universe won't give us a good future…"

"…we'll build one."

Liya stepped closer.

"Together."

Mira sighed.

"Well."

"No pressure."

The countdown dropped rapidly.

02:48

Reality began shaking violently.

The frozen city flickered.

Some buildings turned transparent.

Others shifted slightly.

Like the world was struggling to hold its shape.

The officer shouted,

"Ethan!"

"You have to stabilize the new timeline now!"

He nodded.

The energy around him surged one last time.

But then—

Something unexpected happened.

A voice echoed through the frozen world.

Deep.

Ancient.

And not human.

"Temporal core detected."

Everyone froze.

Mira looked around.

"…You heard that too, right?"

The voice returned.

"Unauthorized timeline creation in progress."

The officer's face turned pale.

"…That's not the universe."

Ethan frowned.

"…Then what is it?"

The sky above them suddenly tore open.

Not clouds.

Not light.

A massive crack in reality itself.

And something began to emerge from it.

The voice spoke again.

"Chronal Enforcement Protocol Activated."

Mira whispered slowly,

"…Oh you've got to be kidding me."

Liya stared upward.

"…What is that?"

The officer answered in a quiet, terrified voice.

"…Time's immune system."

The crack in the sky widened.

And a massive shape started descending into the frozen city.

Something that existed to erase anomalies.

Something that existed to erase Ethan. ⏳
