After Darian's final sentence, the red line trembled for a while longer.
"If he touches me to save me, he will become the door."
Those words did not strike the cold walls of the Body Room and return. They settled inside the room. They clung to Kael's shoulders, to the broken ring on Elara's wrist, to the silence of Rowan's blue line, and to the male hand trembling beneath the glass.
Kael did not move. This time, Elara did not have to stop him. As Kael looked at the bed, he carried the fire inside him in his eyes, but his feet remained on the floor. Darian's hand stayed beneath the glass. His face was still not visible. There was only that hand. The thin fire traces passing over the fingers said that someone inside had not completely disappeared yet.
Elara heard Kael's breathing. It was harsh. Wounded. But it had not fallen apart.
"How do we get them out without touching them?" Elara asked.
