Chapter 66: Gear Second
The steam rose thicker from Luffy's body, curling up toward the sails, his skin flushed deep pink, almost red. His eyes were sharp, focused, nothing like the easygoing captain they knew. He looked like something else entirely. Something dangerous.
Zoro's hand moved to his sword. "What the hell is this?"
Sanji had frozen mid-step toward the kitchen. "Luffy?"
Usopp backed away. "Is this... is this okay? Is he supposed to look like that?"
Nami watched, her heart pounding. She'd seen him fight. She'd seen him destroy fish-men and Marines. She'd never seen him like this.
Luffy didn't answer. He just stood there, steam rising, body humming with something they could feel in their chests.
Then he moved.
One moment he was standing in the center of the deck. The next he was at the bow. Then the stern. Then the mast. Then back to the center. His movements left afterimages in their eyes, trails of pink and steam that faded almost as fast as they appeared.
Johnny's mouth hung open. "What... what was that?"
Yosaku was gripping the railing like he might fall over. "He just... he was everywhere."
Usopp sat down heavily. "That's not normal. That's not normal rubber powers. That's something else."
Luffy stopped at the mast, facing them. The steam was still rising, his skin still flushed, but his breathing was steady. Controlled.
"This is Gear Second," he said. His voice was different. Not the usual lazy drawl. Sharper. Faster.
Nami stepped forward. "Gear Second? What does that mean?"
Luffy looked at his hands, flexing his fingers. "My Devil Fruit makes me rubber. That's not just for stretching. My whole body is rubber. Veins. Arteries. Heart. Everything."
He tapped his chest.
"I can pump my blood faster. Force it through my body at speeds that should kill a normal person. But I'm rubber. My veins stretch. My heart expands. My body can handle the pressure."
Sanji's cigarette had gone out. He didn't relight it. "You're pumping your blood faster? Like a engine?"
"Like a engine," Luffy confirmed. "More speed. More oxygen. More power. Everything moves faster. My punches. My kicks. My reactions. Everything."
Usopp raised a shaking hand. "How much faster?"
Luffy looked at him. Didn't answer. Just moved.
He appeared behind Usopp before anyone could blink. Tapped him on the shoulder. Was back in the center of the deck before Usopp could turn around.
"That fast."
Johnny made a sound like a dying animal. "That's... that's terrifying."
Yosaku nodded vigorously. "Terrifying. Yes. That's the word."
Zoro's hand had relaxed on his sword. He was watching Luffy with something new in his eyes. Not fear. Interest. "What's the cost?"
The crew went quiet.
Luffy's expression didn't change. "It takes years off my life. Every time I use it, I'm shortening my lifespan. The faster I push, the more I use, the more it takes."
Nami's face went pale. "Luffy..."
"I'm working on it. Trying to find a way to use it without the side effects. But right now..." He looked down at his hands again. "Right now, I can't stop it. Once I start, I burn until I run out. And when I run out..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
Sanji spoke quietly. "What happens when you run out?"
Luffy's lips quirked. Not quite a smile. "I get really hungry."
The tension broke. Just a little.
Usopp let out a breath. "Hungry? That's it? You push your heart to explosion and you just get hungry?"
"I burn through energy faster than I can replace it. Food is fuel. When the fuel runs out..." He shrugged. "I crash. Hard. Can't move. Can't fight. Just have to eat and recover."
Johnny nodded slowly. "So it's like a last resort thing. A trump card."
"Yeah." Luffy looked at them. "But in the Grand Line, I'll need it. Against enemies like the ones waiting for us, I'll need everything I have."
He turned to face the mast. "Watch."
He took a stance. Fist cocked back. The steam around him thickened.
"Gomu Gomu no..."
He punched.
"Jet Pistol."
The fist shot forward. Not the usual slow stretch of rubber. It was there and gone in an instant. The air cracked. The mast didn't move, but the wind from the punch rattled the rigging, sent Usopp stumbling, made the sails snap.
Zoro's eyes were wide. "That's not just faster. That's a different kind of power entirely."
Sanji nodded slowly. "If his normal punches hit like a cannon, those hit like..."
"A bomb," Johnny finished. "Those hit like a bomb."
Luffy straightened. The steam was still rising, his skin still flushed. "It's not just punches. Everything is faster. Stronger. I can dodge faster. Move faster. Think faster."
He demonstrated. A series of rapid punches, each one a blur, each one cracking the air. "Jet Gatling." His arms moved so fast they seemed to multiply, a dozen fists, two dozen, all striking at once.
He stopped. The afterimages faded. He was breathing harder now. The steam was thicker.
Usopp was pressed against the railing. "I think I need to sit down."
"You are sitting down," Yosaku pointed out.
"I need to sit down MORE."
Nami stepped toward Luffy. "How long can you maintain it?"
He considered. "Right now? Few minutes. Maybe five. Then I crash."
"And after you crash?"
He smiled, and for a moment he was the old Luffy again. "I eat everything on the ship. Then I sleep for a day. Then I'm fine."
Sanji groaned. "Everything on the ship? Do you know how much food that is?"
"A lot."
"THAT'S NOT A NUMBER, LUFFY."
The crew laughed. The tension broke completely.
Then Luffy's knees buckled.
He caught himself on the mast, hands gripping the wood, breathing heavy. The steam was fading. The pink flush was draining from his skin, leaving him pale.
"Too much?" Zoro asked.
Luffy nodded. "Yeah. Gotta stop."
He slid down the mast, sitting heavily on the deck. The steam was gone now. His skin was normal color again. He looked exhausted. Wiped out. Like he'd run a marathon and then fought a dozen men.
He looked up at them with tired eyes.
"Food," he said. "Now."
Sanji was already moving. "I'll get everything. EVERYTHING."
Nami knelt beside Luffy, her hand on his arm. "You okay?"
He leaned into her, just slightly. "Tired. Hungry. Good, though. Really good. I've been trying to get Gear Second right since Shells Town. Since before Shells Town. And now..." He smiled, weak but real. "Now I have it."
Zoro sat down across from him, arms crossed. "How does it feel?"
Luffy thought about it. "Like my heart is trying to escape my chest. Like I'm burning from the inside. But also like... like I can do anything. Like nothing can touch me."
"Can anything touch you? In that state?"
Luffy's eyes met Zoro's. "Not much. Not yet. But I'll find something in the Grand Line that can. There's always someone stronger. Always something faster. That's why I need it."
Sanji emerged from the kitchen with an armload of food. Bread. Meat. Fruit. Anything he could grab. He set it down in front of Luffy.
"Eat."
Luffy ate.
Not like a man who was hungry. Like a man who was starving. He tore into the bread, the meat, the fruit, barely chewing before swallowing. The crew watched in silence.
Johnny leaned toward Yosaku. "That's... a lot of food."
Yosaku nodded slowly. "And he's not even halfway done."
Luffy kept eating. The pile shrank. His color returned. His breathing steadied. By the time he finished, he looked almost normal.
He leaned back against the mast, patting his stomach. "Good. Really good."
Sanji stared at the empty plates. "You ate two weeks of supplies."
"I'll get more in Loguetown."
"Two weeks, Luffy. TWO WEEKS."
Luffy grinned, and it was the old grin. The stupid grin. The one that made everyone want to hit him and hug him at the same time.
"Worth it."
The crew groaned. Johnny and Yosaku started laughing. Usopp shook his head. Zoro almost smiled. Sanji was already calculating how to restock their supplies.
Nami stayed close to Luffy, her hand in his.
"So that's Gear Second," she said quietly.
"That's Gear Second."
"How many Gears are there?"
Luffy looked at her. That sharp look again. The one that said he knew more than he let on.
"For now? Two. Second and Third. But Second is the one I need to master first. Speed. Power. The ability to hit Logia users before they can react." He paused. "Third is different. Bigger. Slower. More destructive. But I'm not ready for Third yet. Not until I can control Second perfectly."
Zoro leaned forward. "And when you control both?"
Luffy's smile faded. "Then I start thinking about Fourth."
The word hung in the air.
Johnny broke the silence. "Fourth? There's a FOURTH?"
"Maybe. Someday. If I survive that long." Luffy stood up slowly, testing his legs. They held. "But that's for later. Right now, we have Loguetown. Supplies. The Grand Line." He looked at each of them. "One step at a time."
He walked toward the kitchen, pausing at the door. "Sanji, we need more food."
"I KNOW WE NEED MORE FOOD."
Luffy grinned and disappeared inside.
The crew sat in stunned silence for a moment.
Then Usopp spoke. "He's going to be Pirate King."
Johnny nodded slowly. "Yeah. I think he really is."
Yosaku looked at the mast, at the afterimage of that punch still burned into his mind. "And anyone who gets in his way is going to have to deal with THAT."
Zoro smiled. A real smile. "Good."
He closed his eyes and settled back against the mast, reaching for that flicker again. The one he'd felt on the beach.
Something was there. He could feel it now. Not much. But enough.
'One step at a time,' he thought. 'One step at a time.'
