Chapter 61 - 61. Morning After

Chapter 61: The Morning After

The sun was well above the horizon by the time the crew started stirring. The celebration had gone late into the night, and most of them had collapsed wherever they could find space. Johnny and Yosaku were sprawled across a pair of chairs on Nojiko's porch, their faces showing the unmistakable signs of too much sake. Usopp was curled up on a bench, using his bag as a pillow and snoring loudly enough to wake the dead.

Zoro sat against the wall of the house, eyes closed, a half-empty jug of sake beside him. He wasn't sleeping, just resting. Old habit from too many years of needing to be ready for anything.

Sanji emerged from the kitchen, a cup of coffee in his hand and a cigarette dangling from his lips. He looked surprisingly fresh for someone who'd been cooking and serving until well past midnight.

Johnny groaned and opened one eye. "Ugh. My head."

Yosaku rolled off his chair, landing on the ground with a thud. "Everything hurts."

Usopp snorted himself awake, looking around wildly. "What? Who? Where am I?"

Zoro opened one eye. "You're on a bench. In a village. On an island. That we freed yesterday."

Usopp blinked. "Oh. Right." He lay back down. "Can we do that again tomorrow?"

Sanji took a long drag of his cigarette. "Which part? The fighting or the drinking?"

"Neither. The part where we're heroes and everyone loves us."

Johnny sat up slowly, holding his head. "That part was pretty great."

Yosaku crawled back onto his chair. "The food was amazing though. Sanji, you outdid yourself."

Sanji smirked. "Of course I did. I always do."

The four of them sat in comfortable silence for a moment, watching the village come to life. People were already moving about, repairing damage, cleaning up from the celebration. But there was something different in the air. Hope. Freedom. The weight of eight years had been lifted.

Johnny broke the silence first. "So what's the plan now? Head to the Grand Line?"

Sanji nodded. "That's the goal. The All Blue is waiting."

Zoro shook his head slowly. "That's not how Luffy works."

Yosaku looked at him. "What do you mean?"

Zoro opened both eyes, staring at nothing. "The captain doesn't just rush into things. Not really. He plans. He prepares. He makes sure we're ready before we take the next step."

Sanji raised an eyebrow. "You're defending his strategic thinking? The guy who charged into Arlong Park without a plan?"

"He had a plan," Zoro said. "Beat everyone up. It worked."

Johnny laughed. "Can't argue with results."

Zoro continued. "We'll probably stay here for a while. Train. Rest. Get stronger." He paused. "And every night, he'll most likely be fucking Nami's brains out."

Silence.

Then Johnny burst out laughing so hard he fell off his chair again. Yosaku doubled over, wheezing. Usopp clutched his stomach, tears streaming down his face.

Sanji's eye twitched. "You don't have to put it so crudely, mosshead."

Zoro shrugged. "Just stating facts."

"Facts?" Sanji's voice rose. "You don't know that. You're just guessing."

"I'm observing. There's a difference."

"Oh yeah? What do you observe, swordsman?"

Zoro looked at him flatly. "I observe that they disappeared into her room last night and haven't come out yet. I observe that he's been waiting for this since before we even left Syrup Village. I observe that he has been walking around with a particular kind of tension for weeks that is now noticeably absent."

Sanji opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

Johnny was crying with laughter now. "He's got you there, cook!"

Yosaku wiped his eyes. "The mosshead speaks!"

Sanji's face reddened. "You're disgusting, you know that?"

Zoro almost smiled. "Takes one to know one, twirly brow."

"DON'T CALL ME THAT!"

"Why not? It's accurate. Your brows are twirly."

"At least I don't look like I lost a fight with a lawnmower!"

Zoro touched his hair reflexively. "My hair is fine."

"It looks like moss!"

"Moss is green. My hair is green. Your point?"

"It looks like MOSS, you idiot! Like something that grows on rocks!"

Johnny and Yosaku were howling now. Usopp had fallen off his bench and was rolling on the ground.

Zoro stood slowly, cracking his neck. "You want to settle this the usual way?"

Sanji dropped into a fighting stance. "Anytime, anywhere."

The door to Nami's house opened.

Luffy stepped out, and everyone froze.

He was wearing his usual red vest and blue shorts, his straw hat in his hand. But his face... his face held the widest, stupidest, most satisfied grin any of them had ever seen.

For a moment, there was dead silence.

Then Johnny lost it.

"OH MY GOD! LOOK AT HIS FACE!"

Yosaku pointed, shaking with laughter. "THAT is the face of a man who had a REALLY GOOD night!"

Usopp sat up, still wheezing. "Captain! Captain, tell us! How was it?!"

Sanji forgot his argument with Zoro entirely, staring at Luffy with a mixture of envy and amusement. "Well. That answers that question."

Zoro sat back down, a rare smirk on his face. "Told you."

Luffy walked toward them, still grinning, still radiating pure satisfaction. He didn't say anything. Didn't need to. His face said everything.

Johnny cupped his hands around his mouth. "CAPTAIN! YOU'RE A LEGEND!"

Yosaku nodded vigorously. "Tell us everything! Don't leave out details!"

Usopp scrambled to his feet. "Was it romantic? Passionate? Did you sweep her off her feet? Literally? Because you can stretch and stuff."

Luffy just kept grinning, walking past them toward the kitchen.

Sanji sighed. "He's not going to say anything."

Johnny shook his head. "He doesn't have to. That smile says it all."

Zoro picked up his sake jug. "Three days. Maybe four. Then they'll be normal again."

They all looked at him.

"What?" he asked.

"How do you know that?" Usopp demanded.

Zoro shrugged. "Observation."

Nojiko chose that moment to step out of the house, her face bright red. She walked past the group without making eye contact, heading toward the village.

Johnny noticed. "Hey, Nojiko! You okay?"

She didn't respond. Just walked faster.

Yosaku squinted. "Why's she so red?"

Usopp's eyes widened. "Wait. Did she see something?"

Sanji's face went through several expressions. "No. No way."

Zoro took a long drink. "This is better than any fight."

Luffy emerged from the kitchen with a plate piled high with meat, bread, and bacon. He sat down at the outdoor table and started eating like nothing had happened, that stupid grin never leaving his face.

Sanji watched him for a moment, then shook his head. "I made that food. At least appreciate it."

Luffy looked up, chewing. "It's good."

"That's it? Just 'it's good'?"

"It's really good."

Sanji sighed. "I'll take it."

The others joined them at the table, still laughing, still making jokes. Johnny and Yosaku took turns mimicking Luffy's satisfied expression, which sent Usopp into fresh fits of giggles. Even Zoro cracked a smile once or twice.

They ate and laughed and talked, the morning sun warming their faces, the weight of yesterday's victory settling into something comfortable.

Then the door opened again.

Nami stepped out.

The table went quiet.

She looked... different. Not in any obvious way. She wore the same clothes, had the same short orange hair, the same sharp eyes. But there was something new in the way she moved. Something softer. Something settled.

She walked to the table and sat down next to Luffy without a word.

The silence stretched.

Nami looked around at all of them staring at her. "What?"

Johnny opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

Yosaku poked him. "Say something."

"I can't. She's scary."

Usopp nodded vigorously. "Very scary. Intimidating. Terrifying."

Nami's eye twitched. "I'm sitting here eating breakfast. How am I scary?"

Sanji quickly looked away, focusing on his coffee. "You're not scary at all. Beautiful. Radiant. Definitely not scary."

Nami stared at him.

He shrunk slightly.

Zoro just smirked and kept drinking.

Nami turned to Luffy. "Why is everyone being weird?"

Luffy shrugged, still chewing. "Dunno."

She sighed and grabbed some food. "Fine. Don't tell me." She took a bite. "So. Where are we heading next? Straight for the Grand Line, or another island first?"

The question hung in the air. The mood shifted from teasing to something more focused.

Luffy swallowed his food and set down his fork. "Here's the plan."

Everyone leaned in.

"We're staying here for two weeks."

Zoro nodded slowly, a small smile on his face. Sanji noticed.

"What?" Sanji demanded.

"Nothing."

"You're doing that thing where you're smug."

"I'm always smug."

Luffy continued. "We need to rest. Recover. And train. Intense training. Every day."

He looked at each of them in turn.

"After two weeks, we set sail for Loguetown."

Usopp's eyes widened. "Loguetown? The birthplace and deathplace of Gold Roger? The Pirate King?"

"The same," Luffy said. "We'll stock up there. Gather supplies. Prepare for the Grand Line."

Everyone looked at Zoro.

He raised his cup. "Told you."

Sanji actually nodded. "Alright. You know him better than I do."

Johnny leaned forward. "So what kind of training we talking about?"

Luffy pointed at Usopp, Sanji, and Nami. "You three. Physical training. Lots of it. Running, lifting, endurance. You need to be stronger."

Usopp gulped. "How much running?"

"A lot."

"I was afraid you'd say that."

Luffy pointed at himself and Zoro. "We'll be focusing on other things. Haki training. Taking our abilities to the next level."

Zoro's eyes gleamed. "Finally."

Nami looked at Johnny and Yosaku. "What about you two?"

Johnny and Yosaku exchanged a glance. Then Johnny spoke.

"Actually... we've been talking. About our future."

Yosaku nodded. "We're bounty hunters. Been doing it for years. But after everything that happened here... watching you guys fight, watching you work together..."

Johnny continued. "We were thinking maybe we could join. For real. Be part of the crew."

The table went quiet.

Luffy's smile vanished.

His face went blank. Completely unreadable.

Johnny and Yosaku froze. The silence stretched, uncomfortable and heavy.

Luffy stared at them for a long moment. Then he spoke.

"Are you sure?"

Johnny swallowed hard. "Yeah. We're sure."

Yosaku nodded firmly. "We want to serve you, Captain. Be part of this crew. Part of whatever comes next."

Luffy kept staring. The seconds ticked by.

Then his smile returned, wider than before, brighter than the sun.

"Welcome to the crew."

Johnny and Yosaku let out breaths they didn't know they'd been holding. Grins spread across their faces.

"Really?" Johnny asked.

"Really," Luffy confirmed. "You'll train with Usopp, Sanji, and Nami. Get stronger. Learn to fight together."

Yosaku pumped his fist. "YES!"

Usopp clapped them on the back. "Welcome to the suffering! The training is gonna be brutal!"

Sanji shook his head. "You're celebrating now. You won't be after the first day."

Nojiko, who had returned at some point during the conversation, spoke up quietly. "I want to train too."

Everyone looked at her.

She crossed her arms. "I don't want to join the crew. I have responsibilities here. But I never want to feel helpless again. Never want to watch the people I love suffer while I can't do anything." Her eyes were hard, determined. "If something like Arlong ever happens again, I want to be able to fight."

Luffy nodded. "You can train with us. For as long as you want."

Nojiko smiled, small but real. "Thank you."

Luffy stood, stretching. "Alright. Training starts in one hour. Everyone get ready."

Groans from Usopp. Nervous nods from Johnny and Yosaku. Determined expressions from Sanji and Nojiko. A quiet smile from Nami.

Zoro stood too, cracking his neck. "Finally. Something worth doing."

Luffy looked at them all. His crew. His family.

"We've got two weeks. Let's make every second count."

The sun climbed higher over Cocoyashi Village, lighting the start of a new chapter. Training. Growth. Preparation.

The Grand Line waited.

But first, they would become strong enough to face it.
