Chapter 46: The Shore of Conomi
The Going Merry cut through the calm waters of the Conomi Islands, her sails full with a steady wind. The crew stood on deck, each lost in their own thoughts as the familiar silhouette of the islands grew larger on the horizon.
Luffy stood at the bow, his straw hat casting shadow over his face. He hadn't spoken since morning. Hadn't cracked a joke. Hadn't flirted with Nami or teased Usopp or argued with Sanji about food. He just stood there, watching the islands approach, his expression unreadable.
Nami watched him from the railing, a knot of unease in her stomach. She'd gotten used to his stupid grin, his perverted comments, his endless energy. This version of him was different. This was the Luffy who'd gone quiet before Kuro. The Luffy who'd switched and destroyed Buggy's crew. The Luffy who looked at enemies like they were already dead.
Zoro noticed too. He walked up beside Nami, voice low. "He's been like that all morning."
"I know."
"You okay with it?"
Nami considered the question. "He's focused. That's what we need, right?"
Zoro grunted. "Focused is one word for it."
Sanji joined them, lighting a cigarette despite the wind. "The captain's got that look. The one that says someone's about to get hurt."
Johnny and Yosaku hung back, exchanging nervous glances. Even Usopp was quiet, his usual bravado replaced by something more serious.
The islands loomed closer.
Nami pointed. "There. That's Gosa Village."
The shoreline came into view, and with it, the first signs of Arlong's rule. Houses leaned at impossible angles, some completely overturned. Walls were smashed. Roofs had collapsed. What should have been a peaceful coastal village looked like a war zone.
The Merry docked at a small, battered pier. Luffy was the first off, jumping onto the wooden planks without a word. The others followed, spreading out to take in the destruction.
Nami walked slowly through the ruins, her face pale. "This is what Arlong does. This is his strength." She touched a collapsed wall, memories flooding back. "He doesn't just beat you. He breaks everything around you first. So you know there's no point fighting back."
Sanji kicked a broken beam. "Bastard."
Zoro's hand rested on his swords. "How far to Arlong Park?"
"It's on the other side of the island," Nami said. "But first... I need to go to Coco Village. I need to see my sister. Nojiko."
Luffy nodded once. No words. Just acknowledgment.
They started walking.
The streets of Gosa Village were empty. Doors hung open. Windows were shattered. Signs of life abandoned in a hurry. A child's toy lay in the dirt, half-crushed. A pot of food sat cold and untouched on an outdoor stove.
Usopp picked up the toy, a small wooden boat, and set it carefully on a windowsill. "No one should have to live like this."
Johnny spat on the ground. "Fishmen."
Yosaku shot him a look. Johnny's face fell. "Sorry. I mean... Arlong's men. Not all fishmen. Just..."
"We know what you meant," Sanji said quietly.
They walked on, the weight of the place pressing down on them.
Then Zoro stopped. "Company."
Two figures emerged from a side street, blocking their path. They were tall, easily seven feet, with grey-blue skin and sharp teeth. Fishmen. One had the features of a sawshark, the other a ray. Both carried weapons and wore the unmistakable arrogance of those who'd never been challenged.
The sawshark fishman grinned when he saw Nami. "Well, well. Look who's back. The little thief returns." His eyes swept over the crew. "And she brought friends. What's this? Did you finally find some humans stupid enough to help you?"
The ray fishman laughed. "Look at them. A crippled swordsman, a twirly eyebrow, a long-nose, and some riffraff. Arlong's gonna love this."
Nami stepped forward, ready to speak. Ready to explain. Ready to do what she'd always done, talk, negotiate, survive.
She never got the chance.
Luffy moved.
One moment he was standing beside her. The next he was in front of the fishmen, his fist already extended. It connected with the sawshark's face with a sound like thunder. The fishman didn't even have time to scream. He flew backward, crashing through the wall of a collapsed house and disappearing into the rubble.
The ray fishman barely had time to register what happened before Luffy's leg swept his feet out from under him. As he fell, Luffy's elbow came down on his chest, driving him into the ground with enough force to crack the stone beneath.
Two seconds. Maybe less.
Luffy stood over the unconscious fishmen, his face completely blank. No anger. No satisfaction. Just emptiness.
"We don't have time for nonsense," he said quietly.
The crew stared.
Johnny's mouth hung open. Yosaku looked like he'd seen a ghost. Even Zoro raised an eyebrow.
Nami's heart pounded. She'd seen this before. The switch. The moment when Luffy became something else.
Luffy turned to face them. His eyes were calm, focused, terrifying.
"Listen up," he said. His voice carried, not loud but absolute. "This is it. The end game fight for the East Blue."
He looked at each of them in turn.
"Arlong has the highest bounty in this sea. His crew has terrorized these islands for years. But we're not just here to save one village or one woman." He paused. "We're here to announce ourselves to the world."
Zoro's hand tightened on his sword. Sanji's cigarette burned forgotten between his fingers.
Luffy continued. "When we beat Arlong, the Marines will know our names. Other pirates will know our names. The Grand Line will know we're coming." His eyes hardened. "This is where we stop being just another crew. This is where we become something more."
He looked at Nami, and for just a moment, something soft flickered in his gaze. Then it was gone.
"Let's go. Coco Village."
He turned and walked, not waiting to see if they followed.
They did.
Nami fell into step beside him, close enough to touch but not quite touching. She wanted to say something, to thank him, to ask if he was okay, to bridge the distance between the Luffy she knew and this Luffy who moved like death.
But she didn't.
Instead, she walked beside him in silence, matching his pace, trusting that the idiot who flirted and laughed would come back when this was over.
Behind them, Johnny leaned close to Yosaku. "That's the captain?"
Yosaku nodded slowly. "That's the captain."
Sanji lit another cigarette, hands steady despite everything. "I'm starting to understand why Zoro follows him."
Zoro heard. Didn't respond. Didn't need to.
They walked through the ruins of Gosa Village, toward Coco Village, toward Arlong Park, toward whatever waited. And at the front, leading them all, Luffy walked with the certainty of a man who'd already decided how this would end.
