Chapter 15 - Price of separation

A roll Royce Culligan rolled into the driveway of an ivory colored mansion and stopped at its front.

The driver's seat opened and a stocky man with black velvet suit and white gloves stepped out and rushed to the passenger's seat. He opened the door and a tall man with broad shoulders, mean face and tall legs stepped out instantly.

His eyes scanned the length and breath of the mansion before proceeding inside.

Martin Chamberlain is going to meet his father George Chamberlain. Mr George Chamberlain has been a business Titan during his younger active years, he was ruthless and feared, collecting building contracts like gemstones, buying up competitors and other smaller companies and merging them into his own.

Seven years ago he had a major accident at a construction site, as a result he was rendered immobile and confined to a wheelchair which led him Into an early requirements.

George might have retired physically but he has not retired mentally, he still exerted control over the runnings of the company. His son Martin it's so incompetent that it bothered him so much, the board has been threatening to oust him and bring in a board of directors to run the company. That was when that girl Sarah Arcadia came around and became a great assistant to his son, she covered up for his shortcoming and stupidity. She drafted proposals and speeches for him and made him look less foolish before the company boards and the general public. But George knows that the girl should not be by his side for long, she could pose a risk especially if she finds out the real truth about why her parents died.

Martin Chamberlain passed through the long line of servants standing along the entrance to his dad's home office, they were all bowing to him in reverance but he did not acknowledge them at all.

When he walked into his dad's home office the sight that greeted him was his father sitting on the wheelchair looking older than the last time he saw him, but more resolute and stronger. A nurse was pulling out a syringe from the veins in his left arms and placing it on a small silver tray.

When Martin entered George did not acknowledge him nor returned his greetings instead his eyes were fixed on the seventy two inches LED television screen before him showing video of tigers and antelope living together in harmony the African safari.

After making Martin look invisible by making him stand for fifteen minutes, he picked a small ceramic white cup filled with warm black tea and sipped it lightly before saying, "Why didn't you come immediately I asked of you?"

"I was busy running around settling some issues in the company, I came as soon as I get chance to,"

George lifted up his face to look at his son for the first time since he came and said

" You said you have been busy with company matters, but what do you have to show for it? Nothing, the company is turning into a mess, clients are calling threatening to terminate their contract, the board are angry, the stocks are crashing, so tell me exactly what have been busy doing Martin Chamberlain?" By now his eyes were red and the veins in his forehead and the back of his Palm were threatening to burst from pressure.

Martin shifted back to evade some of the waves of anger oozing out of his father's body. Martin knew that anytime his father referred to him as "Martin Chamberlain" he meant serious business.

"Father I have been working day and night to ensure the success of this company, very soon I will bring you good news and all these problem will be resolved,"

George is not convinced, he doesn't trust this son of his for even one bit, he regarded him from head to toe before asking him, "Where is she? Where is that woman who is always by your side, I heard you have been moving around town with a red haired vixen while leaving the company in a mess. That woman it's the only person that can handle this company,"

Martin lowered his head as his eyes darted about furiously, he was not expecting his father to ask him about Sarah, his father has never bothered with his relationship with Sarah or any other women.

"I haven't seen her for a few days, father, I don't know her whereabouts," Martin lied.

"How can you say you don't know the whereabouts of your girlfriend, that girl lives with you, works for you, does everything for you, how come you don't know where she is?'

"Dad she is no longer my girlfriend, I broke up with her before she went missing, how do you expect me to police the location of a grown woman."

George looked at his son in disbelief " you broke up with her!!"

George took a good look at his son, he maybe other things but one thing he is not is a good liar.

He already knew from the way his fist was clenched tightly behind his back, the way his eyes kept darting around refusing eye contact with him directly. George just knew his son has something to do with Sarah's disappearance but he would not admit it not that George cares much about Sarah buth this is not the right time for her to disappear yet.

"What have you done to her," George asked, his eyes scanning his son for any sort of evidence of crime.

A new rage suddenly emerged from Martin's eyes; he clenched his fist not in nervousness again but in anger.

"Why are you asking Dad as if you care, as if you are not the cause of what happened to her parents years back!"

At this this juncture the staff attending to George knew it was time to give father and son some privacy and took a voluntary leave.

George's face turned into a mountain of rage.

"And what is that supposed to mean, Son?"

"You think I don't know don't you, Father," there was no longer fear or respect in his voice, only defiance and anger.

If Martin were still younger, George would have struck his face, but Martin is now a man with his own temper and judgement.

Father and son had a battle of looks none refusing to back down for each other. It was not until a servant knocked on the door informing George of an important visitor that came to see him
