An hour after Xavier and Salvar left the penthouse, Silas got ready for the office. He walked the hallway alone, the silence of the house trailing him like a second shadow, before stepping into the garage.
He looked at the bodyguard waiting in front of his car. The man Patrick had assigned, and with hesitation, he got into the car.
Silas watched the man through the rearview mirror without meaning to. It occurred to him, not for the first time, that he had never truly registered the danger until now.
At any moment, in any stretch of road, this man could turn the wheel and take him somewhere the city didn't know about and that could be his end in this life.
But if he dared, of course.
God bless he knew what was happening and had enough belief in himself that he could fight the threat.
Nevertheless, today, he planned to fire the bodyguard. Bodyguard means protection. He can't live with the stake of his life in the hands of a man who is assigned by a traitor.
