Chapter 35 - Chapter 34 - The Letter He Could Not Speak

Chapter 34 - The Letter He Could Not Speak

The first letter took the longest.

Yao Chen sat before the wooden table, brush held between his fingers, while the night deepened outside his window. The six methods lay beside him, each sealed with a soft glow. They were powerful enough to alter the future of the people who received them, yet at that moment, they looked small. Too small.

A scroll could guide a path.

It could not explain an absence.

Xue Lian stood near the window, quiet as falling snow. She did not rush him. She did not offer empty comfort. Some moments needed silence, and she understood that better than most.

Yao Chen looked at the paper.

To Lin Xiao.

Only those three words had been written.

He had faced Soul Burial Valley without trembling. He had stood before the Unburied General. He had carried ten thousand deaths into his soul. Yet now, before a blank page, his hand refused to move.

Lin Xiao would laugh when he read it. Or perhaps he would not. That thought troubled Yao Chen more than he expected.

He lowered the brush.

"I thought this would be easier."

Xue Lian turned slightly. "Because it is only writing?"

"Because no one is attacking me."

"That is why it is harder." Her voice was calm. "In battle, the next step is simple. Block, strike, move, survive. Farewell has no clear technique."

Yao Chen looked at her.

She came closer and sat across from him. "Do not write like an elder leaving instructions. Write like Yao Chen."

He was silent for a while. Then he dipped the brush again.

To Lin Xiao.

I do not know how long I will be gone. I cannot explain everything now. If I try, it may bring danger to you. That sounds like an excuse, and perhaps it is. You may be angry. You have that right.

Yao Chen paused.

Then he continued.

The method I left for you is called the Wandering Saber Shadow Method. Do not laugh at it before practicing. It suits you more than you think. You often hide fear behind jokes. That is not weakness. But one day, your fear must learn to move with your saber instead of standing behind your smile.

He stopped again. Xue Lian read over the words and said nothing, but her eyes softened.

Yao Chen finished the letter.

Do not stop joking completely. The world is heavy enough. But when you are hurt, do not use laughter to keep everyone away. Huo Yuan will pretend not to worry. He will worry. Watch him too. I will return.

He folded the letter and placed it beside the gray scroll.

For a moment, the room felt lighter.

Then he drew another sheet.

To Huo Yuan.

This letter came more steadily.

Your flame has changed. I saw it in Soul Burial Valley. You no longer burn only to destroy. Hold on to that. The Quiet Ember Flame Scripture is not meant to weaken you. It is meant to teach your fire patience.

Yao Chen's brush moved slowly.

You are direct, so I will be direct. Anger is useful in battle, but it is a poor master. If your fire obeys only rage, someone will use that rage against you. Let it protect before it attacks. Let it warm before it burns.

He paused, then added:

If Lin Xiao acts foolish, stop him. If you act foolish, let him talk until you are too annoyed to continue.

Xue Lian's lips curved faintly.

Yao Chen folded the letter and placed it beside the ember-red scroll.

The third letter made his hand still again.

To Qinglin.

The girl had followed them out of disaster with eyes too young for the things she had seen. She trusted Radha. She trusted him. That trust was light in the hand, but heavy in the heart.

Yao Chen wrote carefully.

Qinglin, I am sorry I cannot tell you this in person. If I did, you might ask me not to go, and I may not know how to answer you. That is not your fault. It is mine.

He breathed out slowly.

The Azure Spirit Vein Art is for you. Practice it slowly. Do not rush. It will help your soul grow steady and help you understand what sleeps inside you. If you ever feel strange memories or dreams, do not fear them. Tell Radha. She will know how to comfort you.

The brush paused again.

He did not know why writing that name beside Qinglin's felt natural.

Radha will take care of you. Krishna will act careless, but he notices more than he says. Feng may pretend to be brave. Stay beside him when he does. You are stronger than you think, but you are still allowed to cry.

Yao Chen's eyes lowered.

I will come back. Grow well until then.

He folded the letter with more care than the others.

The fourth letter was for Feng.

Yao Chen stared at the child's name for a long moment. Feng was younger than Qinglin, stubborn in the way only frightened children could be. He wanted to look strong because he feared being seen as small.

To Feng.

You will dislike that I left without waking you. That is fine. You may be angry with me. But do not let anger make you reckless.

The Young Mountain Spear Foundation is for you. Practice the first stance every morning. Do not skip it because it looks simple. Simple things become strong when repeated enough times.

Yao Chen thought of Krishna tapping the stone guardian on the forehead.

Ask Krishna to guide your spear. He may say strange things. Listen anyway. Also listen to Radha. Protect Qinglin, but do not think protecting means never being protected yourself.

He hesitated, then wrote:

Being afraid does not make you weak. Pretending you are never afraid will.

The ink dried slowly.

Yao Chen folded the letter and placed it beside the bronze-gold scroll.

Only two letters remained.

Radha.

Krishna.

Yao Chen looked at their names and felt a strange pressure in his chest. He did not know what they were. That was the truth. Not fully human. Not ordinary cultivators. Not enemies. Not simply companions. Their presence around Qinglin and Feng felt natural, yet too deep to understand. Siangshi had told him to leave methods for them. Xue Lian had told him giving was sometimes a way of saying he remembered.

So he wrote.

To Radha.

I do not know how to speak to you properly. You have helped us many times, often without seeming to do anything. In Soul Burial Valley, you understood wounds that others could not even see. I will not ask who you are. Not now.

The Silent Lotus Heart Method is for you. Perhaps it will be useful. Perhaps not. Still, I wish to leave it with you.

He paused.

Please watch over Qinglin and Feng. I know this request may be unfair, but I trust you. That trust itself feels strange, as if my soul accepted it before my mind could question it.

Yao Chen's brows tightened slightly as he wrote the final line.

If one day I understand why, I will thank you properly.

He folded the letter.

Xue Lian watched him with thoughtful eyes.

"Your soul reacts to her," she said.

Yao Chen did not deny it. "Yours too?"

Xue Lian looked toward the window. "Not in the same way. When she speaks, it feels as if something painful becomes less afraid of being seen."

That description stayed in the room for a while.

Yao Chen took the last sheet.

To Krishna.

The brush hovered.

Then Yao Chen wrote:

I do not know what to write to you.

Xue Lian glanced at the page.

Yao Chen continued.

You act like a careless traveler, but careless people do not stand exactly where danger will arrive. You call it timing. I do not believe you. Still, I will not ask.

The Ninefold Spear Leisure Art is for you. I suspect you will enjoy that more than you should.

Xue Lian lowered her eyes, hiding a smile.

Yao Chen wrote on.

Please guide Feng if he asks. If he does not ask, guide him anyway without making it obvious. He is proud in the way children become proud when they are afraid.

He stopped, then added:

Protect Radha, Qinglin, and Feng. Though sometimes I feel this request is more for my heart than for their safety.

The final line came after a pause.

When I return, I hope you will tell me at least one truth.

Yao Chen folded the last letter and placed it beside the dark-gold scroll.

The table was now divided into six small bundles. Each had a letter and a method. Six paths left behind under a dying lamp.

Yao Chen looked at them for a long time.

"It still feels insufficient," he said.

Xue Lian stood beside him. "Because it is."

He looked at her.

She met his gaze steadily. "Nothing you leave will replace your presence. That does not make leaving wrong. It only means the wound is real."

Yao Chen closed his eyes briefly.

The golden pressure inside his Soul Sea stirred again.

Xuner's cocoon cracked.

This time, the sound reached him even while he was awake.

A soft, clear fracture.

Yao Chen's hand tightened around the edge of the table. Xue Lian also felt it. Frost formed at her fingertips and melted at once.

"Less time?" she asked.

"Yes."

Inside the Soul Sea, Siangshi's voice became sharper.

"Do not delay."

Yao Chen gathered the six bundles carefully. "We need to place them where they will be found after we leave."

"Lin Xiao and Huo Yuan first," Xue Lian said. "Then Qinglin and Feng. Radha and Krishna will know even if we try to hide it."

Yao Chen looked at her.

She gave him a faint glance. "Do not tell me you believe they are easy to surprise."

"No."

They left the room quietly.

Dao Realm Academy at night looked like a dream someone had forgotten to wake from. Lanterns floated along stone paths. Far below, clouds moved between islands like slow rivers. The distant training grounds were empty. Only a few Medicine Pavilion disciples still walked from hall to hall, carrying trays of pills and warm water.

Yao Chen and Xue Lian moved without drawing attention.

First, they reached Lin Xiao's residence.

A faint snore came from inside.

Xue Lian looked at the door. "He is actually sleeping."

Yao Chen seemed slightly surprised. "Good."

He placed the gray scroll and letter on the small table outside Lin Xiao's room, then added a simple protective seal. When Lin Xiao opened the door in the morning, he would find it.

Before leaving, Yao Chen paused.

From inside the room, Lin Xiao muttered in his sleep, "No more valleys…"

Yao Chen's eyes softened.

They moved next to Huo Yuan's courtyard. Unlike Lin Xiao, Huo Yuan was awake. Red light flickered faintly from beneath his door. He was cultivating.

Yao Chen stopped at a distance.

Xue Lian said quietly, "If you knock, he will ask to come."

"I know."

"Can you refuse him?"

Yao Chen did not answer.

That was answer enough.

He placed the ember-red scroll and letter outside the door. As he set the seal, the flame inside the room stirred slightly, as if Huo Yuan had sensed something. Yao Chen stepped back into shadow.

The door opened a crack.

Huo Yuan looked outside.

For a moment, Yao Chen thought he had been seen. But Huo Yuan's gaze only moved across the empty courtyard before lowering to the bundle at his door.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

Yao Chen remained hidden in the shadow beyond the path.

Huo Yuan did not call out. He looked at the letter for a long time, then raised his head toward the night, eyes narrowed.

Perhaps he understood.

Perhaps not.

In the end, he only closed his fingers around the bundle and went back inside.

Yao Chen exhaled slowly.

They continued to the residence arranged for Qinglin and Feng.

This was harder.

The two children slept in neighboring rooms, with Radha's room near theirs and Krishna's at the outer side of the courtyard. The place was quiet, but not unguarded. Yao Chen could feel it. Not a formation. Not spiritual pressure. Something softer and far more difficult to cross unnoticed.

Radha was awake.

She sat beneath a tree in the courtyard, moonlight resting on her hair. She looked toward Yao Chen before he spoke, as if she had been waiting.

Xue Lian's eyes changed slightly.

Krishna leaned against the tree behind her, spear resting beside him. "Leaving gifts at night is very thoughtful," he said softly. "A little suspicious, but thoughtful."

Yao Chen stepped forward.

"I have to leave," he said.

Radha's expression did not change. "I know."

Those two words struck him strangely.

Krishna looked toward the sky. "The clouds have been restless."

Yao Chen placed the four remaining bundles before them: Qinglin's, Feng's, Radha's, and Krishna's.

"For them," he said. Then, after a pause, "And for you."

Krishna picked up the dark-gold scroll and read the title.

His eyes brightened.

"Ninefold Spear Leisure Art."

Yao Chen looked at him. "Do not say anything."

Krishna smiled. "I would never disrespect such a serious inheritance."

Xue Lian looked away.

Radha picked up her white scroll gently. Her fingers rested on the title for a long moment.

Silent Lotus Heart Method.

Her gaze softened.

"Thank you," she said.

The words were simple. Somehow, they made Yao Chen feel as if he had offered something far smaller than what had been received.

From inside one of the rooms, Qinglin stirred in her sleep and called softly, "Brother Yao…"

Yao Chen froze.

The door remained closed.

Radha looked toward the room, then back at him. "If you go in, she will wake."

"I know."

"If she wakes, she will cry."

"I know."

"If she cries, you may still leave. But it will hurt more."

Yao Chen's hand closed slowly.

Krishna's voice was quieter than usual. "Some goodbyes are spoken to the sleeping because the waking would hold on too tightly."

Yao Chen looked at him. "Is that wisdom or excuse?"

Krishna met his gaze. "Both can be true."

Yao Chen stood there for a long time.

Then he bowed slightly to Radha and Krishna.

"Please take care of them."

Radha looked at him with eyes too deep for the mortal night. "We will."

Krishna lifted the scroll in one hand. "And I will ensure Feng learns the first stance before he learns how to complain about it."

Yao Chen almost smiled.

Almost.

He turned away before his resolve weakened.

Xue Lian walked beside him in silence until they left the courtyard.

Only then did she speak. "You did well."

Yao Chen shook his head. "It did not feel like doing well."

"It rarely does."

Behind them, beneath the tree, Radha watched their figures disappear into the night.

Krishna's smile faded slightly.

"He still thinks leaving quietly hurts less," he said.

Radha held Qinglin's scroll against her palm. "He knows it hurts. That is why he left something warm behind."

Krishna looked at the sky.

The clouds above Dao Realm Academy had thickened further. For a brief moment, a faint line of pale law appeared within them, then vanished.

His eyes became still.

"It is looking too early."

Radha's gaze rose as well.

"Not yet," she said softly.

The clouds stilled.

Only for a breath.

But it was enough.

Yao Chen and Xue Lian returned to his room. The table was empty now. The letters were gone. The methods were placed. The room felt larger and colder without them.

Yao Chen stood by the window and looked toward the distant courtyards.

Lin Xiao slept.

Huo Yuan had found the letter.

Qinglin and Feng still dreamed.

Radha and Krishna waited beneath mortal sky like secrets too vast to name.

Yao Chen lowered his eyes.

"I could not say goodbye."

Xue Lian stood beside him. "You did. Just not with your voice."

The black mark on his palm pulsed once.

Senior Brother…

This time, the voice seemed almost amused.

Leaving again?

Yao Chen closed his hand.

Before he could answer, the Soul Sea shook.

The strongest crack yet split across Xuner's cocoon. Golden light poured through it, filling his inner world. Sai Ka and Si Ka appeared instantly. Siangshi's voice rang through him, calm no longer.

"Yao Chen."

His eyes sharpened.

"She is close."

The room trembled.

Outside, the clouds above Dao Realm Academy began to rotate slowly, forming a vast spiral no ordinary disciple could see.

Xue Lian's Frost Yin Flame rose on its own.

Yao Chen turned toward her.

"It is starting."

She reached for his hand.

"Then we face it together."

Inside the Soul Sea, Xuner's cocoon pulsed like an ancient heart.

And from within the golden flame, a faint voice whispered:

"Senior Brother… do not be late."
