Chapter 173 - Chapter 173: Three years later

Sunlight streamed through the large windows of a cozy apartment in Manhattan.

The morning was peaceful.

For exactly three seconds.

Then—

"Mommy!"

The peaceful silence vanished instantly.

Twenty-nine-year-old Lillian barely had enough time to turn around before a tiny blonde whirlwind came sprinting down the hallway.

"Ellie—!"

A small body crashed directly into her legs.

Lillian laughed as she steadied herself.

"Good morning to you too."

Elena Parker looked up at her with a grin missing absolutely none of its mischievousness.

Most people called her Elena.

But to the people closest to her, she was simply Ellie.

Three years old.

Blonde hair that constantly escaped whatever hairstyle Lillian attempted.

And bright blue eyes.

Eyes that looked far too familiar sometimes.

Lillian pushed that thought away immediately.

Ellie wrapped both arms around her mother's legs.

"Hungry."

"That's a wonderful morning greeting."

"Hungry."

Lillian smiled.

"I figured."

She bent down and lifted her daughter into her arms.

Ellie immediately settled against her shoulder like she'd done it a thousand times before.

Which she had.

Three years.

Three beautiful, exhausting, wonderful years.

Years that had changed everything.

Years that had somehow passed both incredibly slowly and incredibly quickly.

Lillian pressed a kiss against her daughter's forehead.

"Come on."

Breakfast quickly turned into a battle.

A battle Lillian was currently losing.

"Ellie."

"No."

"Ellie."

"No."

"Eat your fruit."

"No."

Lillian stared.

Ellie stared right back.

Neither moved.

Neither blinked.

The standoff continued.

Finally Lillian sighed.

"You are three years old."

Ellie nodded proudly.

"Three."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then:

"No fruit."

Lillian dropped her head onto the table dramatically.

Somewhere in the distance she could hear her younger self laughing at her.

Because apparently raising a child involved having arguments with someone who still needed help tying their shoes.

The doorbell rang.

Before Lillian could even stand up—

"AUNTIE CHLOE!"

Ellie abandoned breakfast entirely.

Little feet pounded across the apartment.

Lillian immediately stood.

"Ellie, wait—."

Too late.

The door opened.

And Chloe had exactly enough time to grin before a tiny blonde missile launched itself at her.

"Oof!"

Chloe stumbled backward dramatically.

"I've been attacked!"

Ellie giggled.

Chloe scooped her up effortlessly.

"There she is."

"Auntie Chloe!"

"That's me."

Lillian shook her head.

"Traitor."

Ellie gasped.

Then immediately buried her face against Chloe's shoulder.

The betrayal was complete.

An hour later, another knock sounded.

Ellie's reaction was immediate.

"GRANDPA!"

The apartment door had barely opened before she was already running.

Thomas Parker walked inside.

And immediately found himself with a granddaughter attached to his leg.

His expression softened instantly.

"Hello, sweetheart."

"Up!"

Thomas didn't even hesitate.

He picked her up.

Caroline walked in behind him.

And immediately sighed.

"You spoil her."

Thomas looked completely unapologetic.

"Correct."

Caroline rolled her eyes.

Lillian laughed.

Some things never changed.

The afternoon passed comfortably.

Family filled the apartment.

Conversation drifted between topics.

Ellie moved from person to person collecting attention like it was her full-time job.

At one point she sat on the floor building a tower from wooden blocks.

Everyone left her alone.

For approximately thirty seconds.

Then the tower collapsed.

Immediately.

The entire structure crashed to the floor.

Ellie stared at it.

Silently.

Lillian waited.

Caroline waited.

Thomas waited.

Chloe waited.

Nobody said anything.

Ellie slowly frowned.

Then started rebuilding.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Refusing every offer of help.

"No."

Thomas chuckled.

"No?"

"No help."

Lillian smiled slightly.

"Okay."

Twenty minutes later Ellie finally succeeded.

The tower stood proudly before her.

Her expression immediately transformed into triumph.

Thomas laughed softly.

"There it is."

Lillian glanced over.

"What?"

Thomas smiled.

"That look."

Lillian immediately knew.

The determined expression.

The refusal to quit.

The stubbornness.

The absolute certainty that she would succeed if given enough time.

Her smile faded slightly.

Because she'd seen it before.

Many times.

Across conference tables.

Inside boardrooms.

Standing behind office desks.

Sebastian.

For a brief moment silence settled.

Then Ellie knocked over her own tower and started laughing.

The moment passed.

That evening everyone eventually went home.

The apartment grew quieter.

Calmer.

Lillian finished cleaning while Ellie colored at the dining table.

For a moment everything felt normal.

Then she opened a drawer.

And froze.

A small velvet box sat inside.

Hidden beneath old paperwork.

The necklace.

The one Sebastian had given her on her birthday.

Three years ago.

Lillian stared at it quietly.

The memory still hurt.

Not as sharply as before.

Time had softened the edges.

But it was still there.

The ache.

The loss.

The what-ifs.

She carefully closed the drawer again.

And returned to the living room.

Across New York, Sovereign Tower dominated the skyline.

Thirty-one-year-old Sebastian Wolfe stood inside his office.

The city glittered beneath him.

The company was thriving.

Profits were higher than ever.

Investors trusted him.

The media respected him.

The business world feared him.

Everything was exactly as it should be.

And yet.

His assistant stood nearby holding a tablet.

"You should take some time off."

Sebastian didn't even look up.

"No."

The assistant sighed.

"You haven't taken a proper vacation in years."

"No."

"That's not healthy."

Sebastian finally looked up.

The conversation ended immediately.

His assistant wisely retreated.

The office eventually emptied.

Employees went home.

Lights turned off.

The city grew darker.

Sebastian remained.

Working.

As always.

Eventually he reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket.

And removed a silver flask.

The motion was automatic now.

Practiced.

Routine.

He unscrewed the cap.

Took a drink.

Then another.

Not enough to lose control.

Never enough for that.

Just enough to quiet things.

Just enough to make the nights easier.

The insomnia never fully left.

Neither had the loneliness.

Though he rarely admitted either anymore.

Much later, Sebastian finally returned to the Wolfe mansion.

The enormous house remained as quiet as ever.

The silence no longer bothered him.

Or perhaps he'd simply become accustomed to it.

He poured himself another drink.

Then sat alone in his office.

A glass in one hand.

City lights beyond the window.

Three years.

Three years since Lillian walked away.

Three years since she left Sovereign.

Three years since she left him.

The thought no longer caused the sharp pain it once had.

Instead it left something else.

A dull ache.

Permanent.

Familiar.

Like an old scar.

Sebastian took another sip.

And looked away from the window.

Meanwhile, back at the apartment, Lillian tucked Ellie into bed.

Her daughter yawned dramatically.

Then immediately wrapped her arms around Lillian's neck.

One more hug.

Always one more.

Lillian smiled.

"Time to sleep."

Ellie nodded sleepily.

Then murmured:

"Love you, Mommy."

Lillian's heart softened instantly.

The words never failed to affect her.

No matter how many times she heard them.

"I love you too, Ellie."

Ellie smiled.

Then drifted off to sleep moments later.

Lillian brushed a strand of blonde hair away from her daughter's face.

The same blonde hair she saw every morning in the mirror.

The same blue eyes she'd inherited from a father who didn't know she existed.

For a moment Lillian simply sat there.

Watching her sleep.

Listening to her breathe.

Three years had changed everything.

She had built a life.

A home.

A future.

And despite all the hardships, despite all the heartbreak that had come before—

she wouldn't change a single thing that led her to Ellie.

Across the city, Sebastian Wolfe sat alone in a silent mansion with a glass of whiskey in his hand.

And neither of them realized how close fate was to pulling their lives back together.
