Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: God of Storms

Third Person POV

Susanoo, the Captain of the Order of the Black Whale, was a genius. When he was born, the world seemed to cry tears of joy, as it rained for 7 days and 7 nights. These rains were accompanied by lightning and thunder striking those who were lucky. Lucky enough to be chosen by the God of Storms. Such was the beginning of Susanoo's life.

He was the prince of a small Kingdom far East to the Helios Empire, named Shinkoku. His sparkling blue eyes paired with his teal hair had become the symbol of hope for the whole kingdom. They had been at constant war against the choir beasts as well as neighbouring kingdoms. However, since his arrival, they had suffered not a single setback. He was able to expertly weave the water thread at the mere age of 5, a feat unmatched in their Kingdom's history. At the age of 13, he was given an official position in the army as a part of the Emergency Aid forces. A few more years passed, and finally at the age of 17, he participated in his first war. They were fighting a neighbouring kingdom. It wasn't very powerful, but still could prove to be a problem if given favourable conditions.

The Shinkoku Kingdom tried to negotiate, but the neighbouring Kingdom seemed unnaturally set on this war happening. And so it happened. Not a single soul thought of an outcome besides them routing the opposition, as their lucky charm was right there with them. And yet, they started losing. One battle lost. Another battle lost. Everywhere Susanoo fought, they lost the front. Everywhere else, they won. Some doubts started to form in the citizens' minds.

Sensing this, the King ordered Susanoo back to the capital stating some important royal family procedures. The army started winning once again. This was thought of as a small blip in destiny, for the Kingdom started to prosper again. All were happy, except for Susanoo himself. He was made a mere mascot, not allowed to participate in any battles. For a genius such as himself, this was an insult of the highest order. Yet, he stayed at the capital, thinking of the greater good. Over the next few years, he stayed in the capital at his best behaviour, and as a reward, the King allowed him to roam the streets freely and learn of the citizens and their needs, under a disguise.

He had heard of the people who had been struck by lightning during his birth. All of them had gone on to have extremely prosperous lives. One became the Kingdom's greatest merchant, unionizing the entire economy of the Kingdom. Another became one of the most respected Soldiers of the Kingdom. Yet another became the most talented artist and so on. He wanted to meet and learn from them in various fields, as he knew they wouldn't turn their benefactor away.

So he met up with the merchant first. As soon as they spoke to each other, the merchant's chest started tightening and he had to leave to get himself treated. He was found dead the next day. He then met the artist, and as they were having a talk, a branch fell from a tree, not killing him, but blinding him permanently. He killed himself a few days later as he couldn't bear not being able to create new art anymore. He then met up with the soldier and joined him on a routine mission. A choir beast suddenly manifested and to defeat it, the soldier had to use his own arm as a tether and lost his dominant arm in the process. He died during his next mission. One by one, all the lucky people met tragic ends. The news of this reached the citizens as well as the Royal family, who once again had to call him back immediately, citing the same reasons as before.

Susanoo's reputation now had reached an all time low, and the story surrounding his birth had started taking new forms. Yet, the King kept him in the castle. However, even he couldn't quell the riots and was forced to send Susanoo to the most dangerous battlefield for their Kingdom currently, the Yomi front, where they were battling a neighbouring kingdom on one end and the choir beasts on another. Susanoo was indeed a genius, but one who had no experience in actual fights. And so he struggled to cope up with the dynamicity of the battlefield. His weaves hit allies. His weaves miswove causing backlash to himself and around him as well. The battlefield which was on a sharp balance, started tipping away from them. Slowly but surely, their forces were whittling down, and reinforcements were never enough to cover the deficits.

While nobody directly blamed him, everybody's demeanor towards Susanoo had definitely changed. Nobody now looked at him with respect, but moreso with fear and contempt. He endured it all, for he still had a friend among all this. Okita Souji was a boy the same age as Susanoo, widely known in the Kingdom for his incredible fire weaving. Due to how powerful Susanoo's weaving was, there was always a massive amount of water thread resonance wherever he fought. This caused everyone else in the area to be disoriented and caused many more misweaves. Until one day, he fought alongside Okita. Both of them wove continuously for an hour, fending off a massive wave of choir beasts, however, there was no water thread resonance in the area, due to the counter resonance by Okita's fire weaving.

Due to this, the two were always sent to fight together. Over the next few years, they developed a very close bond and both of them accumulated lots of laurels. However, the overall situation was still grim. Their forces had reached a new low, while the choir beasts showed no signs of stopping. The Kingdom had pulled back for now, but nobody knew when they would strike back.

Then one day it happened. When the two were occupied in fighting the choir beasts, the Kingdom attacked, seemingly targeting Susanoo and Okita straightaway. The soldiers, instead of having their back, seemed to simply give way to the enemy. Susanoo wove two, three, four water threads simultaneously holding back choir beasts from one end, and the enemy soldiers from the other. He fought and fought for many hours until the enemy retreated and the choir beasts' waves were done. Throughout all this, he didn't have time to check the safety of Okita. As he slowly got up, about to question the soldiers on why they didn't help him, he noticed the resonance in the area. It was no longer neutral, but was full of water resonance.

His expression darkened. Fearing the worst, he frantically looked for Okita. What he found was a body with its leg bitten off, and 8 stab marks in his torso. For the first time in his life, tears rolled down his wheat-like fair face. However, he wasn't willing to give up so easily. He tried to weave the thread of life. Again and again. Misweaves happened, adding scars on his hand, again and again. After a dozen or so attempts, he had accepted the outcome. The twelfth weave collapsed. The thread dispersed. Okita did not breathe. Susanoo looked at his trembling hands. They had never failed him this many times before. What genius can't even save anything they ever cared about? He cried and cried his heart out. Until there were no more tears left. Then he stood up. The sadness had subsided and been replaced with rage. Pure, unadulterated rage. So much so that he had to close his eyes so he didn't cry tears of blood.

On that day, the world witnessed the true birth of the God of Storms. Susanoo, now having lost his only friend in the world, overcome with grief and rage, began to weave. He wove one water thread. Then two. Then three. Then ten. The raindrops falling from the sky seemed to stop and move upwards randomly. Sometimes, they fell as spears, sometimes as beads, sometimes as large rocks. Due to his rage, he mistakenly wove wind and lightning threads as well. This should have caused a misweave, yet the threads bowed to him, for he was the God of Storms. Everyone around him braced themselves for a misweave that would never come. Then, they looked at the puddles. The puddle showed lightning in the sky. However, the lightning only really arrived in the sky a few moments later. The soldiers started panicking and tried to stop Susanoo. Yet he wove and wove, until nothing remained. No choir beasts, no enemy troops, no ally troops. All washed away by storms so massive they reached the heavens.

He was brought back to the capital for a third time, the same reasons as the first two being stated. The riots had now reached a nationwide scale. They had started much before this incident, but these just made them worse. He had caused the economy to collapse due to the death of the merchant. He had caused the culture to halt due to the death of the artist. He had caused the army to lose a major icon due to the death of the soldier. Many such things. And now, he had wiped out a major portion of the army stationed at Yomi. All this could only mean the death penalty. However, as a last act of mercy from the King, his father, he was exiled from the kingdom.

The story of his birth now is spoken of very differently in Shinkoku. On the day Susanoo, the Demon Child of Shinkoku was born, the heavens cried, They cried and cried for 7 days and 7 nights, flooding the entire region. Many people were struck by lightning, which made them gain hope and then lose it right at the peak of their lives in the most unfortunate turn of events. Everywhere he went, misfortune followed. His only ever friend, Okita Souji, died a brutal death at the jaws of the choir beasts.

And so, after many years of wandering around, fighting at half power to contain the resonance from going haywire, he ended up as the captain of the Order of the Black Whale. It was here that he finally met someone who could let him weave at full power once again. One who could weave fire as well as Okita, if not better. This was the first meeting of The Demon Child of Shinkoku and The Goddess of Victory, Nike.
