Chapter 60 - Chapter 62: The Enemy Within

The quiet of the safe house felt almost unnatural.

Too still. Too perfect.

Ariana stood near the window, her arms folded tightly, eyes scanning the darkness outside as if she could see danger before it arrived. Something didn't feel right. Ever since they stepped inside, a strange unease had settled deep in her chest—like a warning she couldn't ignore.

Behind her, Adrian was on a call, his voice low and controlled as he issued instructions to his network. Every exit secured. Every movement tracked. No one in or out without clearance.

It should have been enough.

But it wasn't.

A faint sound broke the silence.

A soft click.

Ariana turned instantly.

"Did you hear that?" she asked.

Adrian ended the call immediately, his body going alert. "Hear what?"

Before she could respond—

Another sound.

Closer this time.

Not from outside.

From inside.

Adrian's eyes darkened.

"Stay here," he said quietly.

Ariana shook her head. "No."

But he was already moving.

Fast. Silent.

He reached for his gun and stepped into the hallway, every sense on high alert. Ariana followed a step behind despite his warning, her heart pounding harder with every second.

The corridor was dimly lit.

Empty.

Too empty.

Then—

A shadow moved.

Adrian reacted instantly, raising his gun.

"Show yourself."

Silence.

Then slowly—

A man stepped forward.

One of Adrian's guards.

But something was wrong.

His posture. His expression.

Too calm.

Too… prepared.

Adrian's grip tightened. "What are you doing away from your post?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He smiled.

A cold, unfamiliar smile.

And that's when Ariana felt it.

The truth.

"He's not on our side," she whispered.

Adrian didn't lower his weapon.

"Who sent you?" he asked, his voice deadly quiet.

The man chuckled softly.

"You already know the answer."

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

"My mother."

The man gave a slight nod.

"Phase Two has begun."

Those words hit like a trigger.

Everything clicked into place.

The message.

The threat.

The timing.

This wasn't a coincidence.

This was planned.

Adrian's voice dropped lower. "How many?"

The man's smile widened.

"Enough."

Before Adrian could react—

The lights went out.

Total darkness.

Ariana gasped softly, her hand instinctively reaching for the wall.

"Adrian—"

"I'm here," his voice came immediately, close enough to steady her.

Then—

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Closing in.

Adrian grabbed Ariana's wrist. "We move. Now."

They ran.

Through the dark hallway, guided only by memory and instinct.

Behind them—

Voices.

Low. Coordinated.

"They're heading east wing."

"Cut them off."

Ariana's heart raced.

"They're everywhere…"

"Yes," Adrian replied, his tone grim. "They were already inside."

A trap.

From the beginning.

They reached the room where Lia was sleeping.

Adrian pushed the door open quickly.

The bed—

Empty.

Ariana froze.

"No…"

Her voice broke instantly.

"No, no, no—"

Adrian moved forward, scanning the room.

The window—

Open.

Curtains moving with the wind.

"They took her," Ariana whispered, her entire body going cold.

For a second—

She couldn't move.

Couldn't think.

Everything inside her shattered all over again.

Adrian turned sharply, fury radiating from him like heat.

"Not again."

A sound behind them.

They turned—

The same guard stood at the doorway.

Gun raised.

"You should've stayed in the car," he said calmly.

Adrian stepped slightly in front of Ariana.

"You just signed your death sentence."

The man shrugged.

"I'm just following orders."

"Where is she?" Ariana demanded, her voice shaking with rage and fear.

The man's eyes flickered toward her.

"Safe," he said.

The same word.

Again.

And this time—

It felt even worse.

"Your mother," Adrian said slowly, his voice deadly, "this is her move."

The man didn't deny it.

"She doesn't like losing control," he replied.

Ariana stepped forward despite Adrian's attempt to stop her.

"She's using my child like a weapon," she said, her voice breaking. "Why?!"

The man tilted his head slightly.

"Because," he said calmly, "your child isn't just yours."

Silence.

Heavy.

Suffocating.

Ariana's breath caught.

"What does that mean?" she whispered.

The man smiled faintly.

"You'll find out soon enough."

Then—

He pulled the trigger.

BANG!

Adrian reacted instantly, pulling Ariana down as the bullet missed by inches.

He fired back—

The man dropped.

Dead.

Silence returned.

But it didn't feel empty.

It felt final.

Ariana slowly pushed herself up, her hands shaking uncontrollably.

"She's gone…" she whispered.

Again.

Her daughter—

Taken again.

Adrian stood beside her, his expression colder than ever before.

"No," he said quietly.

Ariana looked at him.

His eyes—

Had changed.

This wasn't anger anymore.

This was something else.

Something darker.

"I'm done reacting," he said.

Ariana's breath steadied slightly.

"Then what do we do?"

Adrian turned toward the broken window, the night stretching endlessly beyond it.

"We end this," he said.

A pause.

Then—

"We go to her."

Ariana's eyes widened slightly.

"To your mother?"

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Because this time—

They weren't running.

They were walking straight into the heart of the war.

Cliffhanger:

👉 As they prepare to leave—

Ariana finds something under the pillow…

A small note—

"If you want her alive… come alone." 😈
