Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The Night Everything Changed

Gared and Usher sat in the front row during the mathematics lecture while the professor filled the board with a long and complicated equation.

Usher leaned slightly toward Gared and whispered,"Are you excited about the party and dinner tonight?"

Gared smiled without looking away from the board."A little. I told my mother I'd be home late."

He paused, then added quietly,"By the way… which restaurant are we going to?"

Usher answered with complete confidence."A burger place. The best burgers in Veradin. Trust me."

Gared raised an eyebrow."Do you go there every time?"

Usher winked."Of course. Some traditions are sacred."

Before he could continue, the professor's voice cut sharply through the room.

"Gentlemen, please pay attention. I do not enjoy repeating explanations."

Both of them straightened immediately.

Behind them, Austin, Ryan, and Daniel turned slightly, trying and failing to hide their laughter.

Daniel whispered,"They've been caught."

The lecture eventually ended, and students began pouring into the hallway.

The five of them gathered near the door almost instinctively, as if they had already grown used to standing together.

Ryan suddenly ran a hand through his hair.

"Guys… help me out. I have to go to that party tonight."

Usher grinned."And who's stopping you?"

Ryan answered with exaggerated seriousness."Carmen is performing tonight. I feel like it's destiny… that I meet her."

Gared laughed."Destiny? She has to notice you first."

Ryan raised a confident finger."She will notice me tonight."

Then his tone shifted slightly.

"The problem is my parents have a night shift at the hospital."

Gared looked at him with interest."Your parents are doctors?"

Austin nodded."Dr. Martin and Dr. Sylvie. Two of the most respected doctors in Veradin."

Gared looked impressed."That's amazing."

Ryan sighed dramatically."Amazing? I'm always the one stuck babysitting my little sister while they're gone."

Gared said sincerely,"That's actually kind of you."

Ryan smiled at him."Thanks… but not tonight. Tonight I'm meeting Carmen."

Usher suddenly snapped his fingers."I have an idea."

Everyone looked at him.

Ryan narrowed his eyes."What idea?"

Usher said,"Your sister studies with my brother, right? Bring her to our house. I'll ask my sister Emily to look after her until we get back."

Ryan's eyes widened."That… is brilliant."

Austin laughed."Remember this moment when we need a favor."

Gared smiled."Well, since Ryan's crisis is solved, let's grab lunch. One more lecture, then the party starts."

Daniel pointed down the hallway."Cafeteria?"

Almost all of them answered at the same time.

"Cafeteria."

They walked toward the stairs together, their laughter echoing through the corridor.

None of them realized that the ordinary day they had started was moving steadily toward a moment that would change everything.

As evening approached, Veradin looked warmer than it had in the morning.

Streetlights reflected across the sidewalks, and the university building in the distance glowed brightly, almost like a theater preparing for a show.

Gared stood in front of the mirror adjusting the collar of his shirt for the third time.

He studied his reflection and exhaled quietly.

His mother stepped into the room without knocking.

She smiled."Isn't that a bit much for a university party?"

Gared tried to sound casual."It's just an orientation event. I don't want to look like I don't care."

She stepped closer, watching him with calm eyes.

"Veradin is a beautiful city."

She paused.

"But it isn't as simple as it looks."

Gared turned toward her."What do you mean?"

She shrugged lightly."Nothing. Just… take care of yourself."

His phone buzzed.

Usher had sent a message.

Usher: "Don't show up dressed like it's a formal event."

Gared smiled.

Gared: "Too late."

At Usher's house, he stood in front of his closet tossing shirts onto the bed.

"Which one looks better?" he asked his sister Emily.

She barely looked up from her phone.

"Any of them. Just don't embarrass me in front of my friends."

Usher laughed.

"I'm always stylish."

His phone rang.

Ryan.

"My sister will be there in ten minutes. Don't let her destroy the house."

Usher replied,"The plan is flawless."

Across town, Ryan stood in front of a mirror adjusting his dark jacket.

He looked down at his younger sister.

"Behave tonight, alright?"

She crossed her arms."Only if you bring me something sweet."

Ryan smiled."Deal."

He sent a message to the group.

Ryan: "Tonight… is the night."

Austin replied immediately.

"Don't exaggerate."

Daniel wrote,"I bet you'll freeze the moment you talk to Carmen."

Ryan answered confidently.

"I never freeze."

Meanwhile, Daniel was tying his shoes when the curtain behind him moved slightly.

He turned quickly.

"…Not tonight," he muttered.

He walked to the window and shut it firmly before sending a message.

"First one there gets the front row."

In his room, Austin sat on the edge of his bed staring at a black shirt in his hands.

A faint warmth spread through his chest.

He clenched his fist.

"Not today."

He put the shirt on and left the room.

Soon they were all approaching the university from different directions.

Ryan spotted Usher first.

Usher grinned.

"Ready to meet your destiny?"

Ryan smirked.

"I was born ready."

Daniel arrived next.

"Please don't start without me."

Austin followed last, quieter than usual.

Gared looked at the brightly lit building.

"It's bigger than I expected."

Usher laughed.

"Wait until you see the inside."

They walked together toward the entrance.

Music and laughter spilled out through the doors.

Ryan pushed the door open.

"Well, gentlemen…"

"Let's begin."

The hall exploded with light.

Moving colors reflected across faces, curtains, and the large banner hanging behind the stage.

Students crowded around the front rows, talking and laughing.

Ryan nudged Usher.

"Get ready."

The lights dimmed for a moment, then brightened again.

Carmen stepped onto the stage with her band.

Applause erupted.

She wore a black leather jacket and a dark shirt. Her short black hair framed a sharp face and wide eyes that caught the stage lights.

She stepped up to the microphone.

The band exchanged quick glances.

Then the opening notes of All The Things She Said filled the hall.

Her voice entered the music with surprising strength, clear and steady, carrying a rough edge that gave it depth.

She wasn't just singing.

She owned the stage.

Ryan stared.

"Okay… can you blame me now?"

Gared smiled.

"No, my friend. No one can."

Usher laughed.

"The song barely started and you're already in love."

Ryan lifted his chin.

"I don't fall."

"I choose."

Then Carmen looked toward the front row.

Her eyes stopped.

But not on Ryan.

On Gared.

She smiled.

A small smile.

Barely noticeable.

But unmistakable.

Something stirred in Gared's chest.

It wasn't simple admiration.

It felt like something deeper.

Ryan leaned toward him.

"Wait… was she looking at you?"

Gared shook his head quickly.

"I doubt it."

But his heart wasn't so sure.

The song ended with loud applause.

Carmen bowed briefly and left the stage.

A middle-aged man with thin glasses stepped onto the platform.

The college director.

"Thank you to our talented performers," he said through the microphone. "And welcome to all our new students."

His speech was calm.

Reassuring.

Until he said,

"Before we conclude, I would like to introduce one of the newest members of our academic staff."

"Professor Nathan."

The five exchanged glances.

Daniel whispered,

"Did our professor just change?"

Ryan stared at the stage.

"I think so."

Nathan walked onto the stage slowly.

Tall.

Sharp-featured.

Dressed in a simple dark suit.

But something about his presence felt heavier than the lights around him.

He took the microphone.

His voice was deep.

Calm.

Precise.

"History," he said slowly, "is not merely a record of the past. It is a force shaped by those who dare to change it."

The hall grew quiet.

The words themselves weren't strange.

But the way he said them felt… different.

Austin felt heat returning to his chest.

Gared instinctively grabbed his wrist.

Usher whispered,

"Is the air getting colder… or am I imagining things?"

Daniel glanced around.

"The atmosphere changed."

Nathan's gaze slowly moved across the hall.

Then, for a brief moment, his eyes stopped on them.

He smiled.

Barely.

"I look forward to meeting you in class."

Applause returned.

Noise filled the hall again.

But something unseen had already begun to move.

Then a sharp crack sounded above the stage.

Heads turned upward.

One of the large lights flickered violently.

Usher muttered,

"That's not good…"

A burst of sparks exploded.

The light shattered.

A flaming wire fell onto the curtain behind the stage.

Fire spread instantly.

Students screamed.

The celebration turned into chaos.

"Move!" Ryan shouted.

But the flames did something strange.

Instead of spreading randomly, they twisted.

As if pulled by an invisible force.

Toward the front row.

Toward Usher.

Austin stepped forward instinctively.

"No!"

He raised his hand without thinking.

The fire stopped.

Frozen in midair.

A burning mass hung in the air just meters away.

Austin stared.

"What…?"

His hand moved.

The fire moved with it.

He lifted his arm slightly.

The flames rose upward.

Away from Usher.

"Austin… what are you doing?" Usher gasped.

Austin didn't answer.

Gared rushed forward, grabbing Usher's arm and pulling him back.

Another explosion roared above them.

A second light burst apart.

A wave of fire rushed toward Gared.

He raised his arm instinctively.

The flames surrounded him.

But they didn't burn him.

They spiraled around him like a fiery storm.

Ryan shouted,

"Gared!"

Austin pushed his hand forward.

The flames vanished.

Just like that.

As if someone had flipped an invisible switch.

The fire suppression system finally activated.

Water sprayed from the ceiling.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Gared grabbed Austin.

"Are you okay?"

Then he turned to Usher.

"You're not hurt, right?"

Usher shook his head.

"I'm fine."

Ryan and Daniel rushed over.

Daniel whispered,

"What just happened?"

Austin stared at his hand.

"What… was that?"

No one answered.

At the far end of the dim hall, Professor Nathan stood in the shadows watching.

Not shocked.

Not frightened.

Just observing quietly.

As if he had expected this all along.

A moment later he was gone, swallowed by the chaos as if he had never stood there at all.

As the distant sirens of the fire trucks approached, none of them understood that what had just happened was not an accident, but the first true test of a circle that had already begun to close around them.
