Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: Grass on the Grave

"Ah! It's hot! It burns!"

The purple flames clung to Kokabiel like maggots on a bone. His clothes and feathers were incinerated instantly, and within a second, the smell of charred flesh filled the air.

Kokabiel never expected this human to also possess a Sacred Gear. If so, why didn't he use it from the start? Why wait until he had let his guard down, thinking Rhode was out of tricks, to suddenly unleash its power?

If it were an ordinary Sacred Gear, Kokabiel could have ignored it. But as the flames burned through his skin and began to erode his muscle and bone, he realized this wasn't an ordinary Gear—it was a Longinus, a tool capable of killing even a God!

This bastard human was holding back while fighting me?!

Recognizing this, Kokabiel's mind completely broke. Even as the purple flames wreathed him, he tried to reach out and grab Rhode. But even without super-acceleration, Rhode could easily dodge his attacks.

To Rias and the others, the scene looked like a one-sided mockery. A cadre as powerful as Kokabiel had been reduced to a pathetic mess in less than ten seconds since Rhode's arrival.

Seeing this, Rias, Sona, and the others found it hard to believe. Rias, in particular, had assumed Rhode was at most on par with a high-class devil. This was why she had been so indignant after hearing Akeno's relay of his words. We're in the same class, why should I listen to you?

Even though Rias knew she hadn't spent much time researching her Power of Destruction, she still didn't want to admit she hadn't put in the effort. But seeing Kokabiel handled like a stray dog by Rhode, Rias's mindset underwent a very subtle change.

Maybe... maybe it wouldn't hurt to listen?

However, the battle wasn't over yet.

"You... you bastard!"

Stripped of his clothes and a large portion of his skin, Kokabiel was now a terrifying figure of charred muscle. Anyone else would have died from such injuries, but Kokabiel managed to stand again, the holy power within him still dense.

In Rhode's eyes, however, he was already at the end of his rope. He was likely holding on through pure will and adrenaline.

"I'll kill you all! Everyone is going down with him!" Kokabiel roared, his killing intent toward Rhode reaching its peak.

Holy power erupted, suppressing and extinguishing the purple flames. At the same time, he raised both hands above his head, releasing an unprecedented, blinding light. A Light Spear manifested instantly—massive, thirty meters long, and containing far more holy power than any of his previous attacks!

Rias and Sona's eyes widened. As devils, they could clearly sense the massive energy within that spear. If it were dropped, perhaps the entire town of Kuoh would be wiped off the map.

This time, they were truly afraid. They realized their earlier desire to challenge Kokabiel had been beyond foolish. In his eyes, their resistance was like that of ants; in a single second, they would have vanished along with the city.

How ridiculous. They actually thought they could beat Kokabiel without the help of Lucifer or Leviathan?

"You bastards! Go to hell! I am a Fallen Angel recorded in the Bible! Even the God of the Bible has clashed with me!" Kokabiel had drained every last drop of holy power from his body, his eyes filled with madness. He didn't care about a Great War anymore. He just wanted Rhode dead!

Rhode unsummoned Aroundight back to his storage and brought out Excalibur again. Hearing Kokabiel's boast, his left hand gently stroked the silver-white blade. He chuckled softly and said, "Tossing a light spear from eight hundred miles away counts as an 'exchange' too."

"You bastard!" Kokabiel's last shred of sanity snapped, and he hurled the Light Spear directly at Rhode.

"Rhode!" Lavinia's shout came from behind him. At the same time, Rhode felt his body being reinforced by some sort of magic. A bone-chilling cold surged from behind him.

It was Lavinia. Sensing the danger, she had appeared behind him. She summoned the six-handed Ice Princess, an endless stream of cold suppressed within that pale body.

"Wait, I've got this."

The world stopped moving again.

The pale ice flowers floating in mid-air reflected tiny glints of light. The blade Rhode had stroked began to glow with a starlight-like brilliance, growing more radiant by the second.

Gather the breath of the stars above, the flow of glorious life.

"A bit cheesy, but since no one can hear me in the super-acceleration domain, whatever."

As Rhode's words fell, he exited the super-acceleration domain.

Immediately, a beam of light capable of melting everything swallowed Kokabiel's Light Spear. After erasing the energy that could have destroyed Kuoh, the beam surged forward without losing momentum, slamming into Kokabiel. The radiance lit up his skinless face.

"How... how is this possible... I... I actually..."

In the next second, the terrifying energy completely destroyed Kokabiel's figure. The torrent of light tore through the night, illuminating half the city. When the pillar of light vanished, there was no sign of Kokabiel left.

[You have successfully defeated the Boss: Fallen Angel Cadre Kokabiel] [Damage reward calculation beginning] [Rewards: Senzu Bean x100, Revival Coin x1] [Item: Senzu Bean (Instantly restores all stamina and energy when eaten)] [Item: Revival Coin (Up up down down left right left right B A—try again. Revives the user with full health on the spot after death.)]

As the system's voice rang out, the items appeared in Rhode's storage.

"One hundred Senzu Beans. With what I had before, I can basically eat them as snacks now." Rhode was satisfied. Of course, what he liked most was the Revival Coin. With two lives, he didn't have to worry about sudden death anymore. Though with his caution, that was unlikely anyway. But a Revival Coin was one of those things you'd rather have and not need than need and not have.

After Kokabiel was dealt with, Lavinia walked up. "That was amazing, Rhode. You even settled an opponent like that." A smile played on her face. She had almost intervened just now.

"It was alright." Rhode nodded slightly, keeping it low-key.

Having lost all sense of the cadre's aura, Rias, Sona, and the others finally reacted. Rias's expression was complex. He really had killed him. And in a straight-up battle, too. If it had been them, the grass on their graves would be several feet high by this time next year.
