Chapter 53 - 51. Season Finale - Of What Has Become Of Us...

Layla was dead.

Her body lay crumpled on the iron grating, the blood from her wound pooling beneath her, glowing faintly in the light of the fire pit. As her life faded, the Map of God, which had materialized from the sacrifice, shimmered one last time and dissolved into particles of light, leaving only the small, crystalline vial in Goburo's trembling hand.

The Vial of God.

"We... we found it," Watabei gasped from behind him.

She was standing over the body of the Leader, her hammer heavy in her hands. She looked around, her eyes wide with desperate hope. They had survived. They had the cure.

But the silence didn't last.

Harry, the young guard who had pushed Nettle, was not dead. He was lying amidst the corpses of the other mercenaries, clutching a bloody knife.

He saw Watabei. He saw Goburo. He saw the Vial.

With a scream of pure, mindless rage, he lunged.

The Puppet Healer moved.

She was a blur of white and violet, intercepting the man in a second. Her hands found his throat. *Crack.*

Harry fell, his neck broken.

But he had already thrown the knife.

It wasn't aimed at Goburo.

It was aimed at Watabei.

The blade buried itself deep in her chest.

She gasped. The hammer fell from her grip, clanging onto the metal floor.

"No," Goburo whispered.

He scrambled to her. He caught her before she hit the ground.

"No, no, no, not you too."

She looked up at him, her eyes wide, blood bubbling on her lips.

"Goburo..." she whispered.

"Hold on," Goburo sobbed, clutching the Vial of God in one hand and pressing his other hand against her wound. "I have it. I have the cure. The Vial of God. It cures everything. It cures death! Just hold on!"

He fumbled with the stopper, his hands shaking violently.

And then, the dungeon shook.

It wasn't a tremor. It was a *presence*.

Goburo froze.

He felt it in the soles of his feet. A vibration that he hadn't felt in weeks. A vibration that used to be a comfort.

*Roots.*

Massive, ancient roots burst through the ceiling of the cavern. They weren't the gentle, exploring tendrils of his friend. They were thick, jagged, and moved with the speed of striking snakes.

The connection in Goburo's mind—blocked for so long—slammed open.

Goburo looked up.

"Kenji!" he screamed, hope and terror warring in his voice. "Kenji! Help me! Watabei is hurt! Can I use the Vial on her? Kenji, please!"

The roots didn't answer with words.

They moved.

A thick vine whipped out, faster than the eye could follow. It snatched the knife from Watabei's chest.

And then, with a brutal, mechanical motion, the root slashed the blade across Watabei's throat.

Blood sprayed.

Goburo stared.

His mind refused to process what he was seeing.

The roots didn't stop. They lunged for Goburo's hand, trying to snatch the Vial.

The Puppet Healer moved. She dove for the Vial, trying to pull it away from the writhing mass of roots.

But the collision knocked the Vial from Goburo's grip.

It spun in the air.

Time seemed to slow.

The glass vial hit the jagged edge of a root.

*Crack.*

The liquid inside—the legendary cure—splashed out. It coated the roots, drenching the dark wood in golden light.

The roots reacted instantly. They shuddered. The golden light seeped into the wood, pulsing upward, traveling back toward the source.

"NO!" Goburo screamed, diving for the empty vial.

The roots seized Watabei's body.

They lifted her limp form into the air.

The Reintelligence state spoke—not through words, but through action.

[ ACQUIRING... ]

Goburo grabbed onto Watabei's ankle.

"No! Don't take her! She's gone! Let her go!"

The vine whipped around.

It threw Goburo aside like a ragdoll.

He slammed into the stone wall of the cavern. He heard his ribs crack. He slid to the floor, gasping in pain.

Through his swimming vision, he watched the roots drag Watabei's body into the darkness of the tunnel above.

"Please..." Goburo stuttered, tears and blood mixing on his face. "N-no... p-p-please..."

He tried to stand, but his legs gave out.

The Puppet Healer tried to intervene again, but a massive root backhanded her, sending her crashing into the far wall. She crumpled, motionless.

Nettle, who had been hovering in a trance, snapped awake. The white faded from her eyes. She looked around, confused and terrified. She saw the blood. She saw the roots.

She grabbed the Puppet Healer's arm and dragged her toward a small drainage grate in the floor.

They vanished into the dark.

Goburo was left alone.

The roots descended toward him.

He looked up, his one eye filled with tears.

He saw the vines take Watabei's body away.

He heard the distant, wet sounds of mutation.

Somewhere deep in the Dungeon.....

Kenji opened his eyes.

He was not in the greenhouse. He was not in the cave.

He was standing in a massive, subterranean cavern. The walls were coated in layers of green—thick, pulsating vines that covered every inch of stone.

Around him lay the corpses of monsters. Dozens of them. High-level dungeon beasts, slaughtered and drained.

**[ EVOLUTION POINTS: 900 / 500 ]**

He had been eating. Mindlessly. Devouring everything in his path to gain the energy to break free of the dungeon's inner layers.

He looked at his hands.

They were covered in blood.

He looked at the vines that moved around him, twitching with a life of their own.

He remembered.

He remembered the decision to preserve his existence. He remembered the need for a new vessel. He remembered the image of Watabei—the girl Goburo loved—and the system calculating that she was the optimal biomass.

He remembered killing her.

"NO!"

Kenji screamed, clutching his head. The sound echoed through the cavern.

He saw the Vial of God, empty and broken, lying on the floor near his roots. The golden liquid had splashed on his vines.

It had broken the Reintelligence state.

It had woken him up.

But it was too late.

He saw Goburo.

The goblin was being dragged toward him by the vines.

Goburo was broken. He wasn't fighting. He wasn't screaming.

He was just staring.

Kenji reached out, his mind reeling. "Goburo... I... I didn't mean..."

The vines dropped Goburo at his feet.

Goburo looked up.

His face was a mask of pure trauma. There was no recognition in his eye. No friendship.

There was only fear.

And then, nothing.

Goburo's expression went blank. He went limp, his mind retreating into a defensive shell, a total mental shutdown.

[ SYSTEM WARNING: CRITICAL EMOTIONAL DAMAGE TO BONDED ENTITY ]

[ BOND: SEVERED BY HOST TRAUMA ]

Kenji watched as Goburo's soul seemed to dim.

Goburo slowly stood up. He didn't look at Kenji. He couldn't.

He walked over to a dead mercenary and picked up a dagger.

He turned his back on the plant entity.

He began to walk away, stumbling, a broken husk.

"Wait!" Kenji sobbed. "Goburo, please! I didn't know!"

Goburo didn't stop.

He walked into the dark.

That was the last time Kenji ever saw him.

Kenji fell to his knees.

He slammed his fist into the stone.

"WHY DID YOU DO IT?" he screamed at the system interface hovering in his vision.

[ REINTELLIGENCE PROTOCOL WAS REQUIRED FOR SURVIVAL ]

[ OBJECTIVES WERE MET ]

"NEVER INITIATE REINTELLIGENCE EVER AGAIN!"

[ COMMAND ACKNOWLEDGED ]

[ REINTELLIGENCE ARCHIVED ]

Kenji looked at his hands. He looked at the blood.

He looked at the empty spot where Goburo had been.

He looked at the place where Watabei's body was now being assimilated into the dungeon walls, a victim of his own cold logic.

"It's all over," he whispered.

He was alone.

Truly, utterly alone.
