Chapter 27 - Part 3 : The Wing Beneath The East Tower - chapter 25

The tunnel spiraled upward in a slow, winding curve, the stone beneath Hana's feet worn smooth by time that no one alive could remember.

The golden light of the crystal pulsed gently in her hand, illuminating the narrow passage. With each step she took, the glow deepened, almost as if the mansion itself were encouraging her forward.

Or testing her.

Hana moved carefully, her breathing steady but her mind racing.

"Seraphina," she whispered softly, "have you ever seen this place before?"

For a moment there was silence.

Then Seraphina answered quietly.

"No."

Hana stopped.

"…Not even once?"

"Not even in fragments of the mansion's recorded memory," Seraphina replied. "This wing predates most of the structure above it. It was… sealed long before the mansion became what it is now."

Hana's curiosity flared instantly.

"Older than the mansion?"

"Yes."

The single word echoed through the corridor like a dropped stone.

Hana tightened her grip on the crystal.

"Well," she murmured, a grin creeping across her face, "that definitely makes it worth seeing."

The tunnel curved again and then leveled out.

The air changed.

It was colder here.

Older.

The faint scent of metal lingered in the air, mixed with dust and stone that had not been disturbed in centuries.

The crystal suddenly pulsed brighter.

Ahead of her, the tunnel ended in a massive circular door carved directly into the rock.

Hana slowed.

The door was enormous—at least three times her height—and covered in intricate carvings. Spiraling patterns radiated outward from a central emblem she didn't recognize.

But what truly caught her attention were the symbols surrounding it.

They were the same shifting markings she had seen in the tunnels earlier.

Except these were far more complex.

They moved slowly across the surface of the door like living script.

"…Whoa," Hana whispered.

She stepped closer.

The golden glow from the crystal spread across the carvings, revealing additional layers of symbols hidden beneath the first.

Seraphina spoke softly.

"This is not a lock."

Hana tilted her head.

"…Then what is it?"

"A test."

Hana laughed quietly.

"Of course it is."

She crouched slightly and studied the door.

The symbols rearranged themselves whenever she shifted her perspective.

A puzzle.

A moving one.

"…Observation," Hana murmured.

She circled the door slowly.

"…Patience."

The symbols pulsed.

"…Intention."

The crystal in her hand responded immediately, glowing brighter.

Hana froze.

"…Wait."

The patterns on the door weren't random.

They were responding to the crystal's rhythm.

The same rhythm she had felt earlier in the mansion's core.

Hana raised the crystal toward the center emblem.

The symbol reacted instantly.

The spirals on the door aligned for a brief moment before shifting again.

"…Okay," Hana whispered.

"Let's try something."

She closed her eyes.

Instead of watching the symbols, she focused on the rhythm of the crystal.

Pulse.

Pause.

Pulse.

Pause.

The mansion's heartbeat.

Slowly, Hana began tapping her fingers against the stone in the same rhythm.

The door reacted.

The spirals slowed.

The shifting symbols began aligning with the crystal's glow.

Hana opened her eyes.

"…I see you."

Carefully, she pressed the crystal into the center emblem.

For a moment nothing happened.

Then the entire door vibrated.

A deep tone echoed through the stone.

The symbols flared with golden light.

And the massive circular door began to move.

Stone scraped against stone as the ancient mechanism awakened.

Dust cascaded from the ceiling as the door slowly rotated inward.

Hana stepped back slightly as the opening widened.

A wave of cold air rushed out from the darkness beyond.

It carried a strange energy with it.

Not hostile.

But powerful.

The chamber beyond was vast.

Far larger than any room beneath the mansion.

Hana stepped inside cautiously.

The crystal illuminated the space gradually.

Rows of towering pillars stretched upward into darkness. The floor was covered in smooth stone tiles etched with ancient geometric patterns.

And along the walls stood dozens of tall glass chambers.

Each one contained objects suspended within faint blue light.

Books.

Metallic devices.

Strange crystalline instruments.

Artifacts unlike anything Hana had ever seen before.

"…Seraphina," she whispered.

"…What is this place?"

Seraphina's voice held unmistakable wonder.

"A repository."

Hana walked slowly between the pillars.

"A storage room?"

"No," Seraphina said.

"A vault."

Hana stopped in front of one of the glass chambers.

Inside floated a small metallic sphere surrounded by thin rings that rotated slowly around it.

The rings emitted faint arcs of blue light.

"…That doesn't look like anything from the mansion."

"It isn't," Seraphina said quietly.

Hana turned slowly, looking across the chamber.

Dozens of artifacts rested in silent suspension.

Each one humming faintly with dormant power.

"…How old are these?" she asked.

Seraphina hesitated.

"…Older than the mansion."

Hana exhaled slowly.

"So whoever built this place…"

"…Was far more advanced than the architects who built the mansion above it."

Hana's eyes widened.

"…You're serious?"

"Yes."

Hana walked deeper into the vault.

At the far end of the chamber stood a raised platform.

On it rested a structure that immediately drew her attention.

It looked like a circular console built from polished black stone.

At its center hovered a crystalline cube suspended in midair.

The cube rotated slowly, casting faint beams of light across the room.

The moment Hana stepped closer, the crystal in her hand reacted violently.

Golden light surged from it, connecting with the floating cube.

"…Uh oh," Hana muttered.

The cube suddenly stopped rotating.

The entire vault vibrated faintly.

A soft mechanical hum filled the air.

Then the cube split apart.

Its outer layers unfolded like petals of a metallic flower.

Inside was a glowing core of pure white light.

Hana instinctively took a step back.

"…Seraphina?"

"Yes," Seraphina replied calmly.

"…I believe you have activated something."

"Yeah, I noticed."

The core pulsed.

Lines of light spread across the platform beneath it.

Then across the entire chamber floor.

Ancient systems that had slept for centuries began to awaken.

The glass chambers flickered.

Some artifacts glowed faintly.

Others hummed quietly.

And then—

A projection of light appeared in the center of the vault.

It took the shape of a figure.

Tall.

Humanoid.

But composed entirely of shifting light and geometric patterns.

Hana stared.

"…Hello?"

The figure turned slowly toward her.

Its voice echoed throughout the chamber.

Not loud.

But impossibly clear.

"Identity recognized."

Hana blinked.

"…Recognized?"

The projection tilted its head slightly.

"Mansion core synchronization detected."

Seraphina whispered in Hana's mind.

"…It knows you're linked to the mansion."

Hana folded her arms cautiously.

"Alright," she said.

"Let's start simple."

"…Who are you?"

The figure responded without hesitation.

"I am the Archivist."

The chamber fell silent.

Hana looked around the vault again.

The artifacts.

The machinery.

The impossible technology.

"…Okay," she said slowly.

"…Next question."

Her eyes locked onto the glowing entity.

"Why is all of this hidden beneath my mansion?"

The Archivist paused.

Then it spoke words that sent a chill down Hana's spine.

"Because the mansion was built… to protect it."

Hana felt the crystal pulse in her hand.

The mansion above them seemed to stir faintly.

"…Protect what?" she asked quietly.

The Archivist's glowing form shifted slightly.

Then it answered.

"The inheritance."

Hana's heartbeat quickened.

"…Inheritance?"

The figure looked directly at her.

"For the one who would awaken the mansion."

The crystal flared brightly in her hand.

The vault hummed with rising energy.

And for the first time since entering the hidden wing beneath the east tower…

Hana realized something terrifying.

The mansion had not only been testing her.

It had been preparing her.
