Chapter 63 - Chapter 62: The Broken Sabers

Winter was dragging its feet. A fresh cold snap from the north had just slammed into the Mississippi Plains, turning the air into a freezer. Every animal out here was feeling the grind of the survival furnace.

It was evening, and a light snow had started to fall, whipped around by a wind that felt like a jagged blade against my nose. I had to tuck my face into my fur just to keep my nostrils from freezing over.

I was heading back to the den, doing the mental math for the day.

Thirty points today. Not great, but it's progress.

I checked the system. I had over 200 Gene Points banked now. I'd been sneaking out every day to hunt for points and survival .

I reached our territory, but I didn't see Mom and Dad waiting on the usual ridge.

"ROAR—!"

"ROAR—!"

Two massive, furious shouts ripped through the snowy air, followed by a couple of higher-pitched, unfamiliar snarls. They were coming from just over the hill near our spring.

Invaders?

I bolted toward the noise. When I cleared the ridge, I saw a standoff. Two strange Sabertooths—a young male and female—were facing off against Mom and Dad.

Based on their lighter fur and the length of their teeth, they looked like a young couple looking to start a family. It was mating season, the time when young tigers pair up and look for a place to call home. This pair had clearly decided our luxury real estate was up for grabs.

"ROAR!!"

"ROAR!!"

Mom and Dad gave the standard "get lost" warning, but the newcomers weren't moving. They stood their ground, muscles bulging, eyes locked in a predatory stare.

The tension snapped. I don't know who moved first, but in a blur of fur and snow, the four of them collided.

Zack and Zoe were huddled nearby, eyes wide with terror. This wasn't a play-fight; this was a heavy-weight title match, and they knew they were out of their league.

I hesitated. I didn't know if I should jump in. If I got in the way, I might just distract Mom and Dad and get someone hurt. But if they started losing, I couldn't just watch. I stayed low in the grass, watching the chaos.

"ROAR—!"

The four tigers reared up on their hind legs, boxing with their heavy front paws.

Heavy swipes landed on shoulders and faces.

Sabers flashed in the moonlight, aiming for throats and ears.

It was raw, primitive wrestling. They rolled through the snow, a tangled mess of stripes, claws, and blood-red eyes. Within minutes, everyone was leaking. Red stains started blooming in the white snow.

Experience started to win out. Mom, a veteran of a hundred fights, started overwhelming the younger female. She landed a flurry of lightning-fast swipes that sent the intruder staggering back.

"ROAR!!"

Mom didn't let up. She pounced, pinning the younger female to the ground and hammering her with short, brutal strikes. The intruder could only huddle and scream in pain.

Seeing his mate in trouble, the young male broke away from Dad and charged toward Mom. But Mom didn't blink; she spun around and met him head-on.

As Mom and the young male traded blows, Dad found his opening. He lunged at the male's back, his weight slamming into him like a falling tree.

The tide had turned. The invaders were pinned, struggling to find an exit. I started creeping forward, my eyes fixed on the struggling pile.

CRACK!

A sharp, dry snapping sound echoed across the field.

I saw two yellowish, curved objects fly through the air. One of them tumbled through the snow and landed right in front of my paws.

I looked down. It was a saber. A full-sized, broken upper canine.

"Roar~~"

The fight went out of the invaders instantly. The young male, now missing his signature weapons thanks to a brutal counter-swipe from Dad, was shivering. His mouth was a bloody mess.

The intruders panicked. They lashed out one last time to force Mom and Dad to back off, then turned and bolted into the storm.

Mom and Dad didn't chase. In their minds, the territory was safe and the lesson was taught. But they weren't the only ones watching.

Before the young male could get twenty yards, I exploded out of the shadows, my eyes locked on his blood-soaked neck. He wasn't getting away that easily.
