Chapter 17 - Echo of Death

The monster lunged.

There was no warning in its movement—no hesitation, no shift in stance that could be read or predicted.

One moment it stood there, low and coiled like a beast ready to strike…

The next, it was already upon him.

Its claws tore through the air, slicing forward with brutal precision, aimed straight for Thanex's throat.

Too fast.

Too close.

Time seemed to fracture.

Thanex's body locked for the smallest fraction of a second—not even long enough to think, not even long enough to fully process what was happening.

Instinct failed him.

Even fear came too late.

There was no time to dodge.

No time to raise his spear.

No time to do anything.

Then—

Something strange happened.

A whisper brushed against the edges of his mind.

Not a sound.

Not a voice.

Not even a clear thought.

It didn't come with words or meaning. It wasn't something he heard or understood.

It was simply… there.

A sudden, violent awareness.

Danger.

His body moved before his mind could catch up.

Thanex twisted sideways.

The motion was sharp, almost unnatural, as though something had forced his muscles into action.

The monster's claws cut through the space where his neck had been an instant before, missing him by less than a breath.

Air split.

The sound came a heartbeat late.

Behind him, stone exploded as the creature's momentum carried it forward.

Its claws smashed into the pillar Thanex had been standing beside, cracking it open with a thunderous impact.

Fragments of rock scattered across the ground.

Dust filled the air.

Thanex stumbled backward, his footing unsteady as his heart slammed violently against his ribs.

What… was that?

His mind raced, but there was no time to dwell on it.

The monster had already recovered.

It turned immediately, its movements unnaturally fluid for something so large.

A low snarl rumbled from deep within its chest, vibrating through the air like a warning.

Black veins pulsed beneath its skin, faintly glowing, as though something foul and unnatural flowed within them.

Its breath came in slow, heavy bursts, each exhale carrying a rotten, suffocating stench.

Thanex tightened his grip on the broken spear in his hands.

The weapon felt crude.

Unbalanced.

It was nothing more than a sharpened metal rod he had scavenged from the ruins—a desperate substitute for a real weapon.

But right now…

It was everything.

The only thing separating him from death.

The monster began to circle him.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Each step was measured, its eyes locked onto him with an intensity that made his skin crawl. It wasn't just attacking anymore.

It was hunting.

Thanex adjusted his stance, forcing himself to stay grounded despite the tremor running through his arms. His breathing was uneven, but he tried to steady it.

Focus.

If he lost focus now, even for a moment—

He wouldn't survive the next attack.

The monster crouched low.

Its muscles tensed, coiling beneath its corrupted flesh.

Thanex felt it before it happened.

Not clearly.

Not fully.

But there was something.

A flicker.

A disturbance.

The same strange presence brushed against his mind again.

Faint… but there.

The monster moved.

This time, Thanex reacted instantly.

He ducked.

The claws tore through the air just above his head, missing him by inches. He didn't hesitate—didn't stop to think.

He thrust the spear upward with everything he had.

The jagged metal rod drove forward, slamming into the creature's chest.

For a split second, there was resistance.

Then it pierced through.

The monster howled.

The sound was raw, violent, filled with rage rather than pain. Its body convulsed, muscles tightening as dark, corrupted blood spilled from the wound.

But it didn't fall.

Instead, it retaliated.

Its massive body crashed into Thanex before he could pull back.

The force sent both of them tumbling across the cracked stone path.

The world spun.

Thanex hit the ground hard.

Pain exploded through his ribs, sharp and immediate, stealing the air from his lungs. For a moment, he couldn't breathe—couldn't move—couldn't think.

The spear slipped from his grip as he rolled across the rough surface.

Everything felt distant.

Muted.

But the fight wasn't over.

The monster scrambled back to its feet with terrifying speed, as if the wound in its chest meant nothing.

Blood dripped from the puncture, dark and thick.

Yet it still stood.

Still moved.

Still hunted.

Thanex forced himself upright, his body protesting with every motion. His chest rose and fell rapidly as he dragged in uneven breaths.

Pain lingered, but he ignored it.

He had to.

The monster charged again.

Its jaws opened wide, revealing rows of jagged teeth coated in blackened residue. A low growl built into a roar as it closed the distance between them.

Too fast.

Again.

But this time—

The whisper didn't hesitate.

It didn't flicker.

It screamed.

Move.

The command wasn't a voice, but it struck his mind with undeniable force.

Thanex didn't step back.

He stepped forward.

The decision came without thought.

Without hesitation.

Without understanding.

The sudden motion disrupted the monster's attack.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But that fraction…

Was enough.

Thanex seized the fallen spear in the same motion, driving it upward with everything left in his body.

The sharpened rod plunged straight into the creature's open mouth.

There was a sickening resistance as it pierced through flesh.

Then bone.

Then through the roof of its skull.

The monster's body jerked violently.

Its momentum carried it forward, but the strength behind it vanished instantly. The roar died in its throat, replaced by a choking, broken sound.

Then—

It collapsed.

Its massive form crashed against the ground, sending a dull tremor through the stone beneath them.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unmoving.

Thanex remained where he stood, frozen for a moment as his chest heaved. His grip on the spear loosened slightly, though he didn't let go.

Not yet.

Not until he was sure.

Seconds passed.

Nothing moved.

"Huh!!"Thanex sighed.

He leaned on his makeshift spear breathing heavily.

He looked over at the body of the abomination.

Then at the bleak Inchor from the abomination which painted the floor and his hands.

Slowly… the monster's body began to change.

Its form started breaking apart, dissolving into drifting black mist that rose into the air like smoke.

Thanex watched, unmoving, as the creature faded piece by piece, until nothing remained of it.

Nothing…

Except a small crystal resting on the ground.

A monster essence.

The faint glow of it stood in stark contrast to the darkness that had just vanished.

Thanex stared at it.

But his mind wasn't on the crystal.

It was on something else.

Slowly, he lowered his gaze to his hands.

They trembled slightly.

Not from exhaustion.

Not from pain.

But from realization.

Twice.

During that fight—

Something had warned him.

Not clearly.

Not with words.

But enough.

Enough to move.

Enough to survive.

A strange instinct.

A whisper of danger.

His fingers tightened slightly.

His gaze darkened.

"…Was that… the Void?"

The words left his lips quietly, almost uncertain.

Inside his chest, the cold presence pulsed faintly.

Once.

Then again.

It offered no answer.

No confirmation.

No denial.

Just silence.

But Thanex didn't need it to speak.

Because he understood one thing now—

Without that warning…

Without that unnatural, instinctive pull…

He wouldn't be standing here.

He would be dead.

And for the first time since the battle ended—

That realization lingered longer than the fight itself.
