Chapter 55 - Chapter 31: After the Storm

The heavy double doors of the operating theater stood like a barrier between life and death. Outside, the family was trapped in a grueling, agonizing limbo where minutes stretched into eternities.

Drakes let out a long, ragged sigh, burying his face in his hands before running them through his hair. He stared blankly at the sterile white walls, the sharp scent of antiseptic burning his throat.

"Man..." he muttered, his voice cracking slightly in the hollow hallway. "This is only my second time in a hospital, and I already hate it. The air here just... saps the life out of you."

Hours dragged by, heavy and suffocating. Finally, the sharp click of the lock broke the silence. The heavy doors swung open.

Kael's mother, Elara, emerged first. Her face was a pale mask of sheer exhaustion, her eyes hollow. Without a single word, she walked straight past them, her gaze fixed ahead as she headed directly toward her private cabin. The raw fatigue rolling off her was chilling.

Before panic could seize the family, a team of doctors followed close behind. The lead physician pulled off his mask, offering a reassuring, tired nod. "She is out of danger now," he said, his voice a soothing balm to the tense air. "But the surgery took a lot out of her. She needs absolute quiet. Please, let her rest."

Inside the operating theater, the harsh overhead lights blurred in Sara's vision as the heavy fog of anesthesia began to fade. Her body felt like lead, but her mind was already racing, spiraling into a familiar bitterness.

Now that this happened, she thought, a cold dread tightening in her chest, Kael is going to order me to come with him. He won't give me a choice. I'm just a liability to be locked away.

Suddenly, a voice echoed softly in the quiet chambers of her mind. It wasn't the booming command she expected, but a gentle, desperate plea: Sara… please, just take proper rest. Get fit and fine first. Nothing else matters.

At the exact same moment, another voice resonated, this time inside Kael's mind. Nyx's tone was low, pulsing with ancient power. I can heal her completely, Kael... if you let me step in.

Kael closed his eyes, his breathing ragged as he fought back the lump in his throat. He murmured back in a silent, mental whisper, No, not here. Too many eyes. We will heal her together once she gets transferred to a normal ward.

Down the hall in her private cabin, Elara sank heavily into her desk chair. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the grueling surgery finally evaporated, leaving behind a bone-deep weariness.

"Sara…" she whispered to the empty room, her eyelids fluttering shut, "You are…"

Before she could finish the thought, her head lolled back, and she drifted into a deep, uninterrupted sleep.

The door clicked open softly, and Adrian stepped inside. A tender, fond smile crossed his face as he looked at her slumped figure. He walked over, his eyes softening with an old, enduring warmth.

"You are gorgeous, Elara. And you saved her," he murmured, his voice a gentle caress.

Even trapped in the depths of exhaustion, a faint, instinctual smirk played on Elara's lips. "I know," she mumbled sleepily into the dreamscape, her subconscious arrogance entirely unbothered.

Adrian's eyes crinkled with genuine amusement, a quiet laugh escaping his chest. "You haven't changed a single bit since college." He pulled up a chair, sitting right beside her, content to just keep watch over her while she finally rested.

Meanwhile, back in the hallway, Kael was completely falling apart.

He stared down at his hands. They were shivering violently, shaking with a tremor he couldn't control. These were the very palms that had caused Sara so much pain. The guilt was a physical weight, suffocating him, crushing the air from his lungs.

Sensing the absolute agony ripping through his soul, Nyx manifested into her physical form, materializing from the shadows right beside him. She looked down at him, her expression a complex mix of stern warning and fierce, underlying care.

"Kael… you were blinded by rage," she said, her voice dropping to a harsh, resonant whisper. "I need you to understand the gravity of this: next time, you *must* control your anger. If you don't, you won't just hurt the people around you—you will finish the entire Earth."

The sheer weight of his destructive potential, paired with the image of Sara pale and bleeding, broke him entirely. Kael collapsed forward, sobbing openly. He buried his face in Nyx's lap, his shoulders shaking violently as years of built-up stoicism shattered.

Nyx closed her eyes, letting out a soft, fond huff. Even now, seeing him so vulnerable, she couldn't resist a slight, teasing taunt to ground him. "So... who was it that bragged they could easily control all of us back when they were only ten years old, hm? What happened to that little conqueror?"

But Kael was crying too hard, entirely deaf to the tease, clinging to her fabric like a child lost in a storm as his tears kept falling.

A quiet commotion broke the heavy silence of the corridor. The doors to the operating theater opened once more, and a team of nurses carefully wheeled Sara out on a mobile bed, transferring her down the hall toward a quiet, private ward.

Kael wiped his face, pushing past his breakdown to follow them. When he stepped into the room, the head nurse looked up from adjusting Sara's IV line. She offered him a warm, motherly smile.

"Your father already completed all the paperwork and processes," she said softly. "So your only job now is to give her proper rest and help her recover."

Kael nodded eagerly, a sudden burst of determination in his chest. "Yes! I will!" he promised, his voice a bit too loud for the quiet room.

The nurse chuckled softly, reaching out to stroke his head. "Then the first thing you should do is lower your voice, young man."

At the doorway, Nyx and Drakes were leaning against the frame, watching the exchange with rare, genuine smiles on their faces.

Kael instantly clamped his mouth shut, nodding quickly, his wide, golden eyes blinking in compliance. Amused by his sudden docility, the nurse reached out and softly pinched Kael's cheek before turning to leave.

Kael stood there for a moment, blinking in confusion, rubbing his flushed cheeks with both hands as the door clicked shut.

Turning his attention back to the bed, Kael quietly sat beside Sara. He carefully filled a glass of water, setting it on the nightstand for when she woke, watching her face intently. Sara remained fast asleep, her breathing shallow but steady.

Nyx stepped fully into the ward, her playful demeanor vanishing into one of solemn focus. "It's time," she whispered.

She closed her eyes, raising her hands as she began to chant an ancient, rhythmic incantation:

"Hey, the Dark Lord, heed my call. Provide your pure energy to mend what is broken, and heal her."

A sudden, brilliant green light pierced through the ceiling of the room, cascading down like a soft, celestial waterfall. The light enveloped Sara, washing over her pale skin, knitting together the deep internal trauma and soothing her ragged breathing.

Hours bled into the evening. The magical light faded, leaving behind a peaceful, healing silence. Kael remained in his chair, his hand resting near Sara's, refusing to leave her side. Standing quietly by the door, Elara and Adrian watched over them both—the storm had passed, and in the quiet sanctuary of the ward, the long journey of healing had finally begun.
