Chapter 53 - Chapter 29: The Cage of God

The Price of Salvation

"I can halt the fragments. I can save your precious world," she whispered, her spectral eyes locking onto his. "But it will require a deal."

"A deal...?" Kael breathed, the word tasting like ash.

"One that is beneficial for both of us," she purred, leaning closer until the chill of her presence raised the hairs on his neck.

Before Kael could answer, Sara's voice echoed sharply in his mind. *'Kael, be careful. She wants something precious. Something only you can give her.'*

Kael's jaw tightened. "Your words are making me think of things I'd rather not imagine," he murmured aloud, his gaze never wavering from the entity before him.

"I want your vessel, Kael. I want to live in it," Nyx clarified, her voice dripping with cold, absolute certainty.

Suddenly, a cloud of ash and dust materialized nearby, condensing into the furious, trembling form of Drakes. "What are you saying, Demon Lord?" he demanded, his voice laced with venom.

Nyx slightly turned her head, offering a dismissive glance that cut deeper than any blade. "What? I am a Demon Lord, after all. Did you expect a saint?"

"Deal done," Kael interrupted, cutting through the rising tension before a full debate could spark.

Drakes stared at him in sheer disbelief, his breath catching. "Kael, no—"

"Just save the world," Kael commanded. It was not the voice of a helpless child; it was an unwavering decree.

A serene yet terrifying smile played on Nyx's lips. She looked downward, then raised her hands out to her sides, embracing the dying cosmos.

"Regeneration."

The word pulsed with an ancient, suffocating power. Suddenly, time itself seemed to reverse for everything around them—except for her. The chaotic, shattered remnants of the cosmos began to mend. Kael looked up, watching Mars realign seamlessly into its orbit, and then turned his gaze to the Earth, now whole, vibrant, and breathing once more. He exhaled a long, heavy breath of relief.

"Thanks," Kael said softly.

"Now, complete the process," Nyx replied.

Without another word, her physical form dissolved into a swirling cloud of dark dust, surging forward and forcing its way directly into Kael's chest.

"Aaaaaaaa—!!!"

Kael arched his back, a blood-curdling scream tearing from his throat as the raw, abyssal energy flooded his veins. The agony was absolute. His eyelids grew heavy, his vision blurring into a haze as darkness claimed him, second by agonizing second, until everything went completely black.

The Awakening

When Kael's eyes finally snapped open, the suffocating darkness was gone. Drakes and the lingering, shadowy aura of Nyx were there, but his focus immediately locked onto Sara. She was staring at him, her expression uncharacteristically cold, masking a deeper, trembling terror.

Before anyone could utter a single word, Sara lunged forward. She threw her arms around him, burying her face into his chest in a desperate, fiercely tight hug. As she held him, Kael reached back to steady himself, only to freeze.

The familiar weight on his back was gone. His broken wings were entirely missing.

"Hmm...? Sara, it's okay. I'm alright," Kael whispered, closing his eyes and leaning into the embrace. Then, a sudden shudder ran down his spine as the phantom pain of the possession lingered. "Wait... during the fusion, I felt something horrible. Like I was staring directly into the face of death."

An uncomfortable silence fell over the group. No one dared to answer him. Sara said nothing either; she simply tightened her grip, holding him as if he might disappear into the vacuum of space if she let go.

Realizing she wasn't ready to speak, Kael gently sighed and began to stroke her hair, comforting her in the quiet, fragile aftermath of the storm.

Finally, Sara pulled back, her grip loosening. "I was scared," she whispered. She wasn't crying, but her eyes were rimmed with red, holding back a flood of tears.

Kael smiled warmly, his eyes crinkling into gentle crescents to reassure her.

As Sara stepped back, completely breaking the embrace to stand floating in the quiet expanse of space, Kael remembered his true mission. His expression hardened with resolve. "I need to reach the place where my mother and father are being held hostage."

From within him, Nyx's voice echoed with genuine amusement. "I am surprised that you can handle two souls."

Kael looked down at his own small hands and merely hunched his shoulders. It was a bizarre, heavy sight: a ten-year-old boy, standing in the cosmos, anchoring two dark, ancient souls within his fragile frame.

"Broken Wings," Kael muttered.

With a sharp, violent snap, dark wings erupted from his back. Without hesitation, Kael dived down toward the Earth. In that instant, the physical projections of the Demon Lord and Drakes vanished back into his consciousness.

But as Kael flew, he heard the rustle of feathers beside him. To his surprise, Sara was diving right alongside him, a pair of broken wings stretching from her own back.

Kael looked at her, stunned. She offered him a soft, knowing smile.

"How did you get the broken wings?" Kael asked over the rushing wind.

"When you receive power, I receive it too," Sara replied smoothly, her voice cutting through the gale. "It's to provide a perfect balance in your body."

Kael's smile returned, deeper and more grounded this time. "Thank you, Sara."

Sara slowed her descent slightly, pausing in mid-air to watch him as Kael continued his relentless, steady flight toward the Earth.

Watching his retreating figure, she couldn't help but marvel. 'If anyone else were in this situation, they would be furious with me,' she thought. 'They'd say I was threatening their power, trespassing inside their body. But Kael is different.'

She shook her head, a soft smile touching her lips as she leaned into a dive to follow him. 'Sometimes... he really doesn't look like a ten-year-old boy.'

Kael looked behind him, blinking in surprise. "Sara, you look like a ten-year-old girl now, too."

She pulled equal to him, the wind whipping her hair. "Yes, because now I am successfully upgraded according to you."

Kael looked forward again, a newfound synchronicity binding them as they tore through the atmosphere together.

The Reckoning

When they finally broke through the cloud layer and reached the Earth, Kael caught sight of the stronghold. A faction of Demonfolks stood assembled on the expansive roof of the concrete building. They were tense, restless—clearly waiting for a sign from their lord.

When Kael descended from the sky, they drew their weapons in shock. But the moment the oppressive, unmistakable soul of the Demon Lord manifested as a towering aura behind the boy, the guards froze. The sheer weight of Nyx's presence made the air turn to ice. A few of them looked ready to collapse right then and there.

Kael landed softly, a dark, dangerous smirk playing on his young face. "Will you handover my parents?" he asked, his voice chillingly calm.

The lead demon trembled, but desperation drove his defiance. He bared his fangs, gripping his blade tighter. "No way... Now, we want them dead!"

Kael's smirk vanished. His eyes went completely dead, reflecting the vast, cold emptiness of the space he had just left. Above the building, Sara continued to circle like a raptor, her broken wings casting a jagged, predatory shadow over the roof.

The wind died down, leaving an agonizing, breathless silence. The demons thought they held the leverage of life and death, completely blind to the fact that they were standing in a cage with a god.
