Chapter 43 - Chapter 19: The Weight Of Secrets

The room grew frigid. Sara's breath hitched as a paralyzing dread washed over her. She had never met this man in the physical realm, nor had she ever spoken her name in his presence—yet he looked at her with chilling recognition.

A heavy, suffocating silence blanketed the ward. Sara prayed for Kael to wake up and draw his parents' attention away. As if on cue, Kael's eyelids fluttered, though he immediately squeezed them shut again, feigning sleep. Nearby, Vrita lay in her hospital bed, pointedly ignoring the mounting tension, her ears buried under a pair of heavy headphones.

Sara tried to catch her eye, but Vrita didn't budge. Just wait, Vrita, Sara thought, a flash of sharp irritation sparking in her chest. I'll deal with you later.

In his semi-conscious state, Kael's mind raced with panic: Sara gets dangerous when she's ignored.

Adrian and Elara turned, their casual curiosity shifting to profound relief as they saw Kael's eyes darting beneath his lids. Elara hurried to the bedside, leaning in close. "Kael... you had me terrified when you started screaming in the OT."

Adrian placed a grounding, heavy hand on the edge of the mattress, his voice thick with emotion. "Your mother nearly collapsed at the door, son."

Kael looked up at them, his vision blurring as tears finally spilled over. His voice trembled, thin and broken. "I… I'm so sorry… Mom."

As he began to sob, Adrian squeezed his shoulder gently. "Don't worry about that now, Kael. Just focus on your mother."

Elara, her own eyes streaming, offered a watery, breathless smile. Kael pushed himself up with shaky, weak arms and pulled his mother into a desperate, tight embrace. "I'm sorry," he choked out, his chest heaving. "I'll never… I'll never make you worry like that again."

Vrita finally stirred. Pulling off her headphones, she sat up and reached out, gently grasping Kael's hand to anchor him. "Kael, you need to focus on your family right now." Then, leaning in until her breath barely brushed his ear, she whispered, "Because you know exactly what happens on December 25th."

Sara's eyes widened, the words striking her with impossible, terrifying clarity. Bound by their shared consciousness, she heard the whisper as if it had been spoken directly into her own mind. A cold shiver crawled up Kael's spine; he sank back onto the pillows, realizing his gown was suddenly drenched in a nervous sweat.

Kael, the Dark Smiler's voice echoed in his mind, dripping with smooth malice. How does she know about her?

Kael hunched his shoulders, his internal thoughts frantic. I… I forgot she knew that.

The Dark Smiler let out a heavy sigh, a sound like grinding stone. Man, you're losing your edge. It's way too early for this.

I know, Kael thought, his nerves completely fraying.

Elara squeezed Kael's hand one last time, wiping her cheeks. "You're stable now, honey. The doctors said you'll be discharged tomorrow." With a final, lingering glance, his parents stepped out of the room to handle the paperwork.

A few moments later, Sara began to fade, her voice lingering like a ghost in Kael's psyche: I'm updating my parameters, Kael. Just for you.

Once they were truly alone, Kael turned to Vrita, his brow furrowed with quiet anxiety. "So... where will you go from here?"

Vrita folded her arms, her expression shifting into something unreadable and distant. "I'm a loner, Kael. Don't worry about me. I'm leaving Earth once this is all over."

Kael looked down at his lap, hesitating as a practical thought crossed his mind. "But… who paid for the surgery and the medicine? We don't have that kind of money."

Vrita gasped softly in mock offense before offering a slight, knowing smirk. "Oh, that? A simple illusion, nothing more. A glitch in their system."

Kael's eyes widened in realization. "Right. I always forget you're a six-million-year-old dragon." He paused, scanning her youthful features, and added without thinking, "But… you look like you're only twenty-four."

Suddenly, the Dark Smiler manifested in his mind, barking a sharp warning: Kael!

Vrita looked down, a faint, entirely uncharacteristic blush rising to her cheeks. She murmured softly, "How can a ten-year-old boy say things like that so easily?"

Kael sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck, his face turning bright red. "I… I'm sorry."

The door clicked open, and the Dark Smiler vanished instantly into the shadows of Kael's mind. A nurse walked in, checking their charts with a warm smile. "Good news. Tomorrow morning you'll both be discharged. You're officially out of serious condition."

The Hidden Truths

Meanwhile, in the hospital manager's office, a much heavier conversation was taking place. Adrian sat on the leather sofa, while the hospital chairman sat across from him behind a grand mahogany desk.

"We will keep this entirely confidential, Adrian," the chairman said seriously. "We won't leak the news that your child possesses such a rare, anomalous blood type. But please, keep him safe. If he gets hurt like this again... he won't survive."

Adrian clasped his hands together in a gesture of profound gratitude. "Thank you. And please... hide Vrita's identity in the records as well."

The chairman nodded gently. "You are my oldest friend, Adrian. You supported me when I was at the most difficult stage of my life. Don't worry about the records. But tell me... is there some kind of history between you and Vrita?"

Adrian scratched his head, looking away with a strained expression. "No. But she saved my child's life."

The chairman nodded slowly, letting the matter drop, though his eyes betrayed that he understood there was much more to the story.

Outside the office, Elara sat on a waiting bench, her knuckles white as she clenched her fists. Tears spilled from her eyes, dripping silently onto her lap. She murmured under her breath, "Kael... I know what you really are..."

The office door clicked open, and Adrian stepped out with a reassuring smile. "Everything is handled. Nothing is wrong anymore."

Elara stood up abruptly and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his chest. "Adrian, please don't hesitate to tell me the truth. I know you know about Kael... because I already know who Vrita really is."

Adrian held her close, gripping the discharge reports tightly in his hand. He kissed the top of her head and whispered, "You will know everything in time, Elara. But right now... knowing everything sometimes only makes a person angry and terrified."

Elara nodded weakly, wiping her tears. "Okay..."

Hand in hand, Adrian and Elara walked out of the hospital to their car. Elara sat silently in the passenger seat, staring out the window, while Adrian started the engine and drove out into the evening.

A Quiet Departure

Back in the ward, the night passed peacefully. Kael and Vrita slept undisturbed as the monitors hummed a steady rhythm.

When the morning light finally filtered through the blinds, Kael blinked his eyes open. He rubbed his face and mumbled to the figure sitting beside his bed, "Good morning."

A hand gently tapped his forehead. "Oh, good morning, Kael."

Kael blinked, realizing it was his father. He quickly looked over at the adjacent bed, but the sheets were stripped and empty. "Dad... where is she?"

Adrian gave a soft, slightly wistful smile. "Vrita was discharged about two hours ago, Kael."

Kael looked up at the wall clock; it was already 10:00 AM. A nurse entered the room holding a clipboard and a stack of release papers. "Sir, if you could just sign these final documents, you can take Kael home."

Kael looked down at his lap, his shoulders slumping. He whispered to himself, I hope I can at least say goodbye to her.

A heavy sadness weighed on him throughout the checkout process. But as they finally stepped out through the sliding glass doors of the hospital lobby, Kael's eyes scanned the grounds. There, standing quietly in the center of the hospital garden, was Vrita.

Kael broke into a run, sprinting across the grass until he stopped right in front of her, out of breath. "Goodbye, Vrita."

Vrita looked down at him, her expression softening. She reached out and patted his head gently. "Bye, Kael."

Turning back, Kael walked toward the car where his father was waiting, feeling a strange, quiet sense of closure.

Behind him, Vrita looked up at the vast sky. A gentle breeze swept past, lifting her hair. She closed her eyes against the wind and whispered into the open air, "We will meet again, Kael."
