Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Hidden System

The grin of the Dark Smiler didn't just fade; it vanished with a suddenness that felt like a physical blow. In its place was a weight of grim gravity, a chilling presence that seemed to suck the warmth from the air and replace it with the cold breath of a tomb.

"So," the entity murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous, guttural register that vibrated in Kael's very marrow. "Where exactly did you find that incantation? That is not a plaything for a child, Kael."

Kael opened his mouth to answer, to explain the dusty book or the feverish dream—he couldn't quite remember which—but the words died in his throat. A sudden, rhythmic throb ignited behind his left eye. It wasn't just pain; it was a sickening, pulse-like sensation that felt as if something was trying to beat its way out of his skull.

The iris bled into a bottomless, obsidian void, devouring the white of his eye before snapping back to its natural hue. It was an agonizing cycle of transformation that repeated again and again.

"It hurts! It hurts!" Kael screamed, his voice cracking. He clawed at his face, his fingernails digging into his skin as if he could physically tear the sensation out of his head. When he finally managed to wrench his hand away, the world felt fundamentally different. The air was heavy, stagnant, and carried the sharp, metallic tang of ozone, as if a lightning bolt had just struck the room.

By the time the harrowing training session concluded, Kael had staggered back to his room, his legs feeling like leaden pillars. He glanced at the digital clock on his nightstand and froze. The neon numbers glowed a steady, mocking **5:00 AM.**

"I thought... I thought we were out there for at least two hours," Kael stammered. He collapsed onto the edge of his bed, clutching his chest as he tried to regulate his ragged breathing. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Dark Smiler hovered nearby, a silhouette against the dim morning light. His expression remained unreadable, his eyes two pinpricks of cold light. "A simple displacement sorcery," he explained coolly. "It folds a pocket dimension around the caster, shielding them from the prying eyes of the mundane. Time is... flexible there. Two hours for us; a mere blink for the rest of the world."

Kael grabbed a fresh set of clothes, a tired, cynical smirk tugging at his lips despite the lingering pain. "So, you're more than just a grumpy shadow. You've got a whole library of forbidden magic up your sleeve. Interesting..."

Without a word of rebuttal, the Dark Smiler's physical form began to fray at the edges. He dissolved into a jagged, ink-like silhouette, melting into Kael's own shadow until the room felt hollow and empty once more.

A moment later, the floorboards groaned outside. The door creaked open, and Kael's father stood in the threshold. His eyes narrowed, sweeping over his son's disheveled state, the sweat-soaked hair, and the trembling hands.

"Kael? You're up early," his father remarked, his voice devoid of its usual morning warmth. "Usually, I have to drag you out of bed at 6:00 for your 7:30 classes. What's changed?"

Kael felt a bead of cold sweat roll down the back of his neck. His mana was utterly depleted, and his muscles felt as though they had been shredded and stitched back together with rusty wire. "D—Dad. Yeah. I just... I went to sleep early last night. Guess my internal clock is ahead of schedule."

His father's face didn't soften; instead, it hardened into a mask of stern parental authority. "Is that so? Well, since you're brimming with such youthful energy, let's head outside. We're doing morning exercises. Now. No excuses."

Kael felt his knees buckle. The thought of physical exertion was nauseating. But before he could utter a word of protest, a sharp, manic burst of laughter erupted inside his skull, echoing off the walls of his mind.

*"I—I—I'm sorry!"* Dark Smiler wheezed through their telepathic link, the sound like dry leaves skittering over pavement. *"I really am, but I can't stop! This is too perfect!"*

*"What are you talking about?"* Kael snapped back mentally, his head thumping in rhythm with his heartbeat. *"Help me out here, don't just laugh!"*

Dark Smiler struggled to catch his breath, his voice dripping with a wicked, predatory amusement. *"Your father, Kael... look at him. Really look at him. He's one of mine. He's a soul from my own legion, a remnant of an army long forgotten!"*

Kael's hand flew to his forehead. The absurdity of his life hit him like a physical blow. *"Is my life just one long prank to you? Dammit!"* He paused, a chilling realization crossing his mind. *"Wait... if you're hitched to my soul, can you cast that displacement sorcery from inside my body, too?"*

*"Oh, absolutely,"* Dark Smiler purred, the laughter dying down into something much more dangerous. *"In fact, it's even more effective that way. But listen to me, Kael. Look out the window."*

Kael stole a glance toward the backyard. There, in the dim grey light of dawn, he saw his father—or the man he thought was his father—already performing rhythmic calisthenics.

*"That man is real enough to the world,"* the Smiler whispered, *"but I simply took a reference of your father's form to fill a void. He is a construct, Kael. He is not your real father."*

Numbly, Kael finished his morning routine. As he brushed his teeth, he stared at his reflection, dreading the answer to his next question. *"Do you know... what happened to my eye? During the incantation?"*

The Smiler's voice grew uncharacteristically somber. *"Something is awakening within you, Kael. Something ancient. I watched your iris turn into the void, but then, just for a few seconds, it flashed a brilliant, piercing green. I don't know what it is, and I don't know if it should be removed or nurtured."*

Kael gasped, the toothbrush slipping from his hand. *"Green? Maybe she was that gir—"*

*"I know you are a ten-year-old boy,"* Dark Smiler interrupted, his tone teasing again, *"but could you perhaps try to talk like a normal child for five minutes? You're far too dramatic."*

Kael apologized under his breath, finished his preparations, and by **7:00 AM**, he was standing at the curb. The school van arrived exactly on time. He boarded in a daze, his mind a whirlwind of shadow armies and phantom parents.

When the van pulled up to the school gates, the world seemed to tilt. There was no morning bustle, no shouting children, no slamming car doors. Instead, the gate was swarming with shadows—hundreds of them, flickering like candle flames in a draft. They weren't moving; they were simply waiting. For him.

Kael realized with a jolt of terror that there were no other students. Only he, Tatsuka, and Shiya stood before the school. Every single shadow turned its featureless head toward them, their collective gaze heavy and suffocating.

"Who are you!?" Kael shouted, his voice echoing through the unnaturally quiet courtyard.

A distorted, metallic sound erupted from the largest shadow, a noise that sounded like a recording being played backward in a cathedral. "I am the Master," the voice vibrated. "The teacher of Tatsuka and Shiya."

Kael looked at his friends, his eyes wide with betrayal. "Is—is that real? Are you with... them?"

Tatsuka and Shiya both nodded, their expressions unreadable. "Yes," they whispered in unison.

"REDEMPTION!" Kael cried out, though he wasn't sure if it was a battle cry or a plea for help.

The Master Shadow moved forward, the air around it rippling. "You seem surprised, Kael. Did you not know that Tatsuka and Shiya are also shadows? They are children of the void, just like the entity clinging to your soul."

Kael sighed, a deep, soul-weary sound. "I... I knew. Somewhere deep down."

"Then how did you know?" the shadow challenged, its form expanding.

Kael looked at the ground, his voice barely a whisper. "I—I forgot. I think I chose to forget."

The Master Shadow raised a hand, and the fabric of reality tore open. A massive, swirling vortex of violet and black energy manifested—a portal that seemed to scream with the voices of a thousand lost souls.

Kael turned to Shiya. "Do you know what this is? Where it goes?"

She didn't answer immediately. When she finally spoke, her voice was hollow. "This is **The Gate of Shadows.** The threshold between the world of light and the realm of the forgotten."

Kael frowned, a flicker of an old lesson returning to him. "But I remember... I read once that humans can pass through the Gate of Shadows without harm. Is that true?"

Tatsuka looked at him with profound sadness. "I am sorry, Kael, but you need to pass through. You have no other choice now. Once we reach the Shadow Realm, I will tell you the whole story. I will tell you who you really are."

At that moment, the Dark Smiler erupted from Kael's shadow, assuming his full, terrifying physical form. He unleashed an aura of such absolute darkness that it made the Gate itself look dim. The air crackled with power as the entity stood guard over the boy.

One by one, they stepped into the screaming vortex. A blinding, pure white light swallowed them whole, slowly fading into a monochromatic haze.

Kael looked out at the jagged, sunless horizon of a new world, his breath hitching in his chest. "So this is it..."
