Chapter 89 - The Waiting Hunter

The night in Ujjaini deepened.

Moonlight washed over the quiet streets of the outer district while most of the city slept peacefully. Lanterns dimmed one by one, and the markets that had once been noisy now rested in silence.

But somewhere above the sleeping city—

A hunter was still awake.

The Watchtower

High atop a smaller watchtower overlooking the outer district, Rudra Sen stood alone.

His posture remained perfectly still as he gazed toward the distant rooftops.

Beside him rested a small metal device—no larger than a palm.

At the center of the device, faint runes pulsed slowly with pale silver light.

This object was connected to the marker coin he had placed earlier.

As long as the coin detected unusual Manas activity—

The device would react instantly.

So far—

It remained silent.

Rudra Sen studied it quietly.

"…Nothing."

Footsteps echoed behind him.

Devika Agnivarna stepped onto the tower balcony.

"You're still watching that thing?"

The hunter didn't look away from the device.

"Yes."

Devika leaned against the railing.

"You placed that marker hours ago."

"And it hasn't reacted."

Rudra Sen nodded slowly.

"I know."

Devika crossed her arms.

"Which means that house was probably normal."

The hunter finally glanced toward her.

"Probably."

Devika frowned.

"That doesn't sound convincing."

A Hunter's Instinct

Rudra Sen turned back toward the city.

The rooftops stretched across the horizon like a dark maze of stone and shadow.

"That boy was meditating."

Devika blinked.

"…What?"

Varun's footsteps echoed up the stairs as he joined them.

"What boy?"

Rudra Sen explained calmly.

"The child inside that house."

Varun frowned.

"You sensed meditation?"

"Yes."

Devika shrugged.

"Lots of children learn breathing exercises from temples."

"Yes."

"But the timing was unusual."

Devika sighed.

"You suspect a twelve-year-old child?"

Rudra Sen shook his head.

"I suspect the fragment hiding inside a mind."

The three Rakshaks fell silent.

Because Arivaan's fragment had already proven one thing.

It was patient.

And clever.

Devika muttered,

"I hate enemies like that."

Back at the House

Inside the quiet home near the market street—

Aarav slept peacefully beneath a thin blanket.

At least—

That's what it looked like from the outside.

Inside his mind—

The mental flame continued burning.

And beside it—

Arivaan watched the faint system interface.

System Recovery: 48%

The villain leaned mentally back against the interface.

"…Almost halfway."

Aarav stirred slightly in his sleep.

Inside the shared mind he murmured,

"Is it morning yet?"

"Not yet."

The boy groaned.

"You never sleep."

"I don't need to."

Aarav rolled over.

"That's unfair."

Arivaan chuckled quietly.

But his attention shifted toward something else.

The faint sensation of the Rakshak marker still lingered above the roof.

Silent.

Waiting.

Arivaan studied the connection carefully.

"…Interesting."

Aarav blinked sleepily.

"What?"

"That coin."

The boy frowned.

"The trap?"

"Yes."

Arivaan focused deeper on the faint energy link between the marker and the distant monitoring device.

The system panel flickered again.

Energy Pattern Analysis – 12% Complete

Aarav tilted his head.

"You're studying it again."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Arivaan smiled faintly.

"Because traps reveal the hunter."

The boy groaned.

"You sound like a villain."

Arivaan chuckled.

"I am one."

Back on the Tower

Rudra Sen remained motionless.

His eyes scanned the distant rooftops again.

The monitoring device still glowed quietly.

No alerts.

No disturbances.

Varun crossed his arms.

"How long do you plan to watch it?"

Rudra Sen answered calmly.

"Until sunrise."

Devika sighed dramatically.

"You're impossible."

The hunter didn't respond.

Instead he looked once more toward the outer district.

Toward the house.

Toward the quiet street where nothing appeared unusual.

But something about that place still felt… wrong.

A Dangerous Balance

Inside Aarav's mind—

Arivaan finished another analysis cycle.

The system panel flickered again.

Marker Signal Path Identified

Arivaan nodded slowly.

"…Good."

Aarav blinked.

"Good?"

Arivaan smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Because the more he studied the Rakshak artifact—

The more he understood how it worked.

And understanding the hunter's tools—

Was the first step to breaking them.

The boy yawned again.

"You're scary."

Arivaan chuckled quietly.

"Efficient."

The system panel flickered once more.

System Recovery: 49%

Arivaan leaned mentally back against the interface.

Because somewhere above the city—

A hunter waited patiently for a mistake.

But the Brainwashing Villain had no intention of making one.

Not tonight.
