Chapter 69 - Chapter 9: Descent Into the Iron Ocean

The Iron Lung did not look like a ship meant for heroes.

It looked like a coffin.

Dave stood at the entrance hatch, staring down the narrow steel corridor stretching into the vessel's interior. Thick pipes ran along the walls like exposed veins, humming faintly with mechanical life. Dim red emergency lights illuminated the hallway, casting long shadows that seemed to move with every vibration of the hull.

Behind him, the Iron Ocean churned slowly under the fractured sky.

Petra walked past him and slapped the heavy hatch closed.

CLANG.

The outside world disappeared.

Now there was only metal.

And the ocean.

Jack's voice echoed through the communicator.

"…yep."

"…definitely haunted submarine energy."

Petra ignored the comment and moved toward the control chamber.

"Welcome to the Iron Lung."

Dave followed her deeper inside.

The ship was far smaller than he expected.

Only a few compartments.

Control room.

Pressure chamber.

Navigation station.

And the dive capsule.

Petra stopped beside a rusted console.

"You should know something before we start."

Dave looked at her.

"…what?"

She leaned against the control panel.

"This ship wasn't built to explore."

"It was built to survive pressure long enough to collect data."

Jack muttered through the comm.

"…translation: it's barely safe."

Petra nodded slightly.

"Exactly."

She activated the main console.

The screens flickered to life.

A deep sonar scan appeared.

Black water stretched for kilometers beneath the ship.

And then—

Something moved.

A massive shape glided slowly across the sonar grid.

Dave stared.

"…that's it."

Petra nodded.

"The Leviathan Fish."

Even through the sonar display, its size was difficult to comprehend.

Hundreds of meters long.

Possibly larger.

Its body moved slowly beneath layers of molten ocean currents like a drifting continent.

Simon whispered inside Dave's mind.

"…that creature carries an ancient narrative."

Dave frowned.

"…ancient how?"

Simon answered quietly.

"…older than the fragments."

Jack groaned.

"…why is everything we fight older than civilization?"

Petra adjusted the sonar zoom.

The creature's shape became clearer.

It wasn't exactly a fish.

Its body was long and armored, covered in massive plates that looked like volcanic stone. Long tendrils drifted behind it like shadowy fins.

And its head—

Its head was wrong.

Not a normal mouth.

But a massive circular opening filled with spiraling structures that looked disturbingly like rotating teeth.

Petra spoke quietly.

"…when our submarine first scanned it…"

"…the creature scanned us back."

Dave looked at her.

"…you're saying it's intelligent."

She nodded.

"More than intelligent."

"It's patient."

The sonar screen flickered suddenly.

The Leviathan moved slightly.

Jack's voice sharpened.

"…uh Dave?"

"…I think it just noticed the ship."

Dave felt the Reader's Viewpoint react immediately.

Threads shifted.

Possibilities collapsed.

New outcomes appeared.

The creature was aware now.

Petra slammed a button on the console.

"Dive preparation!"

The Iron Lung shuddered slightly as massive ballast systems activated.

Heavy mechanical locks sealed the hull.

Water began filling the external pressure chambers.

The ship trembled.

Dave grabbed a railing.

"…we're diving already?"

Petra didn't look up.

"If we stay on the surface, that thing will come up to meet us."

Jack groaned.

"…fantastic."

A loud metallic rumble filled the ship.

The Iron Lung slowly began to descend.

Outside the small reinforced window, the red surface of the Iron Ocean faded into darkness.

The deeper they went—

The quieter everything became.

Only the creaking of the hull remained.

Dave watched the sonar carefully.

The Leviathan was still moving.

But not toward them.

Yet.

Simon whispered softly.

"…it knows we're here."

Petra adjusted the ship's thrusters.

"…we're heading toward the trench where we lost the last submarine."

Dave asked quietly.

"…what happened to the crew?"

Petra didn't answer for a moment.

Then she said simply:

"They heard something."

Jack frowned.

"…heard what?"

Petra stared at the sonar.

"…voices."

The room went silent.

Simon whispered quietly.

"…the Leviathan communicates."

Jack groaned again.

"…nope."

"…I officially hate psychic fish."

The ship continued descending.

Pressure creaked against the hull.

The sonar beeped again.

Dave leaned forward.

"…Petra."

She saw it too.

The Leviathan had changed direction.

It was moving.

Directly toward them.

Petra's voice remained calm.

"…it's coming."

Dave watched the massive shape growing larger on the sonar screen.

Even at this depth, the creature moved with terrifying speed.

Jack spoke quickly.

"…Dave, please tell me your new constellation power works underwater."

Dave clenched his fists.

"…it should."

Simon whispered carefully.

"…only if the creature's story can end."

Dave frowned.

"…what do you mean?"

Simon's answer was quiet.

"…some stories cannot end because they were never meant to."

The sonar alarm suddenly screamed.

The Leviathan appeared on the external camera.

Dave looked up.

Outside the window—

Something enormous passed through the darkness.

A colossal eye opened slowly.

It was bigger than the ship.

And it was looking directly at them.

Petra whispered:

"…there it is."

The Leviathan's voice suddenly echoed through the hull.

Not sound.

Not vibration.

But something deeper.

A thought pressed directly into their minds.

"SURFACE WORLD."

Jack grabbed his head.

"…oh that's bad."

The Leviathan spoke again.

"THE STORY ABOVE IS WRONG."

Dave felt the Reader's Viewpoint flare violently.

This creature had a narrative.

A very powerful one.

"THE WORLD MUST END."

The Iron Lung shook violently as the Leviathan began circling the submarine.

Petra gripped the controls.

"…it's testing us."

Dave stepped closer to the window.

"…then we test it back."

Far beneath the ocean floor—

The ancient creature moved closer to the submarine.

Its massive mouth slowly began opening.

And within the spiraling teeth—

Something glowed.

A strange light.

Not biological.

Not natural.

Simon whispered urgently.

"…that light…"

"…it's a narrative core."

Dave's eyes widened.

"…the Leviathan isn't just a creature."

Outside the window—

The enormous mouth opened wider.

And the glowing core inside it pulsed like a living star.

The truth struck Dave instantly.

"…it's a living story."

The Leviathan spoke again.

"THE WORLD ABOVE IS A MISTAKE."

"I WILL ERASE IT."

The Iron Lung trembled violently as the creature prepared to attack.

Dave slowly raised his hand.

The power of Final Chapter Authority began glowing around his fingers.

"…then let's see if your story has an ending."

Outside the submarine—

The Leviathan Fish lunged.

And the ocean exploded into motion.
