Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Second Trial

The cradle pulsed.

Not violently.

Deliberately.

The molten currents that once spiraled chaotically now moved with intent, flowing through enormous channels along the cradle walls like glowing arteries. The eye above narrowed slightly, its molten surface reflecting the submarine as if it were studying a microscopic organism.

Dave could feel the Entity clearly now.

Not distant.

Not probing from the edge.

It was present.

Inside the cradle. Inside the currents. Inside the chain.

Inside him.

He inhaled slowly.

"Okay," he muttered, voice hoarse. "I can feel it now. That's new."

Jack rubbed his temples. "If you start hearing voices that aren't Simon or the System, I'm jumping overboard."

"You'd melt," David said calmly.

"Worth it."

Ava ignored them both. Her gaze was locked on the viewport where the molten currents had begun forming enormous interlocking rings, each rotating at a different speed.

"It's constructing something," she said.

Future Dave nodded once.

"Yes."

The System flickered in Dave's vision.

Entity Trial Two Initiated

Objective: Structural Influence

Instruction: Guide the Cradle

Dave blinked.

"Guide it where?"

The answer came immediately.

Not from the System.

From the Entity.

A resonance rolled through the submarine like distant thunder felt in bone instead of heard in air.

Then the voice formed.

Not words.

Concepts.

Yet the chain translated them.

"Observers… prove function."

"Control the living structure."

"Shape the cradle."

Dave slowly looked at the massive rings forming outside.

"You want us to… steer a planet-sized machine."

The molten rings accelerated.

Entire sections of the cradle walls began sliding apart like ancient gears waking from sleep. Lava tides rose and fell in enormous controlled waves.

Simon whispered inside Dave's mind.

"It's giving us control… temporarily."

Ava nodded.

"Yes. But not complete control."

David pointed at the rotating rings.

"It created a system. A puzzle."

Jack leaned forward.

"I hate puzzles built by cosmic gods."

Future Dave finally spoke again.

"If we fail, the cradle destabilizes."

Dave looked at him.

"And if we succeed?"

Future Dave's expression didn't change.

"Then the Entity knows we can command it."

The molten rings locked into place.

Three colossal orbital rings now surrounded the submarine like a mechanical halo.

Each ring rotated in opposing directions.

Each controlled different currents in the Iron Ocean.

The System updated.

Cradle Control Interface Detected

Influence Nodes: 3

Dave squinted at the display forming in his vision.

Three pulsing markers appeared.

One glowing blue.

One orange.

One black.

Ava spoke quietly.

"Each ring controls a part of the cradle."

David nodded.

"Mass distribution."

"Energy flow."

"Structural stability."

Jack sighed.

"Of course it's three. Why wouldn't it be three."

Simon whispered again.

"Dave… the Entity is watching how we decide."

Dave leaned forward.

"So it's not just the puzzle."

"No," Ava said.

"It's leadership."

The eye above flared.

The molten currents began accelerating dangerously.

The System warning flashed.

Time Limit Detected

Cradle Destabilization in 4 Minutes

Jack groaned.

"Oh come on."

Dave pointed at the blue node.

"Energy first. Stabilize the currents."

Ava nodded immediately.

"Correct. Without energy balance the other two collapse."

David focused on the orange node.

"I'll regulate the mass flow."

Jack cracked his knuckles.

"Well someone has to keep the thing from exploding. I guess that's me."

Future Dave simply watched.

Observing.

Evaluating.

The chain activated.

Glyphs flared across Ava and David's suits.

The submarine hummed as their consciousness extended into the molten rings.

Outside—

The blue ring slowed.

Energy currents rebalanced.

The orange ring shifted.

Molten tides redirected.

The black ring trembled violently.

Structural pressure surged.

Jack shouted.

"Okay that one is definitely the angry one!"

Dave clenched his teeth and focused harder.

Every memory.

Every integration.

Every version of himself.

The chain surged outward like a living network.

The black ring stabilized.

For a moment—

Everything aligned.

The rings synchronized.

The molten currents calmed.

The eye above pulsed slowly.

The Entity spoke again.

"Correct."

The rings stopped rotating.

The cradle returned to a stable rhythm.

The System chimed.

Trial Two Completed

Chain Influence Confirmed

Dave collapsed back into his seat.

"Oh thank God."

Jack wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Planet saved by group project. Amazing."

Ava looked upward at the eye.

"It's satisfied."

David shook his head slowly.

"No."

"It's impressed."

Future Dave finally turned toward them.

"Now it knows something important."

Dave sighed.

"And that is?"

Future Dave's eyes reflected the molten light.

"That the chain can command the cradle."

The eye above widened again.

But this time—

something else moved within it.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Simon's voice trembled inside Dave's mind.

"Dave…"

"The Entity isn't done."

The System pulsed one more time.

Next Trial Approaching

Dave groaned.

"You've got to be kidding me."

Outside the submarine—

far below the molten ocean—

the folded shadow began to move again.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And this time—

it was rising.

To be continued…
