Chapter 51 - Meanwhile: Sami

Sami sat in her chair staring at the ceiling, her eyes displaying a look of stress. An ashtray sat beside her, filled with cigarette ends. The scent of cigarettes contaminated the small office; her mouth opened, and no smoke left her mouth even though she had just taken a drag.

Bringing the cigarette to her mouth, she takes a final pull and then tosses the end into the pile; the smoke never leaves her body, her body simply resets to before it had ever entered.

Sighing, she sits up, then clasps her hands together and lets out a silent prayer, her eyes shut and mouth much the same.

Please let him be safe.

Please bring him back to me.

Religion was a common thing in Sami's life since she was very young, yet as she matured and unlocked her Extramicy, she began to lose faith.

It never truly vanished, but she still had the nagging feeling that it was all in vain. She was comforted by the thoughts of a grand plan for all living beings, yet she still couldn't understand how she fit that plan. Still day after day, month after month, she still prayed.

Prayed that they would soon return.

Finishing her short prayer, she stood up and walked to the door. As she made it over to the door, she waved her open hand across the smoke-filled air. A slight bubble made of a faint light absorbed the smoke and even the smell.

Soon she clasped her hand, touched her chest, and left the room.

Walking out, she placed her hands into her pockets, her eyes in a saddened state, and her lips following.

As she walked to the door of the crimson cross, her eyes were glued to the ground.

Suddenly, a faint buzz sounded in her pocket.

Slowly and briefly, her eyes widened.

Yet as she saw the message, they sank back into a saddened state.

"SELEN!"

After a moment of waiting, a beautiful girl appeared on the steps leading up to the second floor. She wore a vibrant blue t-shirt matched with a pair of white shorts, below that she had light grey leggings, and atop her shirt an unzipped white jacket sat.

Her face was locked into a permanent look of disinterest. She opened her mouth and spoke; her tone was very typical for her. It was monotone, as if she cared little for the answer provided.

"Where."

"District three, section seven, building thirty."

"Understood."

Without wasting more time on ideal conversation, Selen left the building in a sprint. As she cleared the threshold of the building, she leapt and was launched by ice, then as soon as she left the peak of the ice, it disappeared into nothingness.

Placing her communicator back into her pocket, she waved bye to Cedric with her back to him, her eyes looking down as she left the building. She began down the street, not following Selen but instead going to another place.

As she walked, her mind wandered to many things, from theories to fear, and finally to love.

Her mind always ended at love.

Without even realizing it, she began to cry, her tears poured down her face over and over, yet none of them ever reached her shirt.

After a moment, she turned the corner and walked down a familiar alleyway.

With a few quick seconds, she found herself passing through a solid wall.

Sami was tired, hungry, and even thirsty.

Or at least she should've been, had her body not simply reset, setting her back to a pristine condition, perfect skin, no tears, no smoke in her lungs, a full stomach, and a sound mind.

She was almost thirty-six as of this year, yet she still looked twenty. To most, this was a blessing, but to Sami, it was simply life.

Her life was always regressing, yet the world was always progressing. People aged, died, loved, and lost, yet she stayed the same through all of it. How would it be in a hundred, two, three, a thousand years? Would she still be the same, with everyone she knew being long dead?

Sami stepped outside of the wall and looked over the scenery that she had painstakingly rebuilt, a sprawling forest, with lush grass dancing in the wind, the skyline brightened by the sun setting from behind a mountain range, and the trees danced with the grass.

Her face slightly changed as she observed the landscape.

As she walked through the forest, she followed a long strand of cables before finding the end of them.

There she found a man in a white lab coat and wearing some strange googles working diligently, his body sliding from a myriad of machines typing, sliding, and turning; his movements were swift and seemed to lack any resistance, as if he were gliding above the ground.

"Hey, Celer, any updates?"

Turning his head, the man known to Sami as Celer responded matter-of-factly.

"Only a slight change in temperature, as well as an energy spike within the last few milliseconds, otherwise no."

Sami raised an eyebrow and asked.

"How big of a spike?"

"Ten degrees and twenty-two thousand nova-watts"

Sami's eyes widened at the numbers, their had been little to no change over the past few months, yet now there were two massive changes, and the man delivering these changes to her had said it in such a casual way, as if it had been just another day.

Sami opened her mouth to ask, but before she could, Celer spoke again.

"OH!"

"What?"

"They are coming."

"WHAT!"

Sami's eyes shot to the tree in anticipation of their arrival.

Thank you, G....

Before Sami's thoughts could be finished, two men appeared before her: a tall man with a tired, distant gaze and another heavily wounded man in his arms. The taller one began to speak.

"He.."

Before he could finish, though, he began to fall forward. He used the last ounce of his strength and twisted his body, falling to his massive back.

Without wasting time on being shocked sami had already grabbed Solaris and picked him up. Despite her small size, she was very strong and strong enough to pick up Solaris in his weakened state.

With a burst of speed, she took off running. Turning her head slightly, she watched as Celer placed his leg under Ember's back and, with a slight movement in his foot, tossed him up and caught him on his left shoulder.

Within a moment, Celer was next to Sami.

The two ran to the gateway with terrifying speed, then they passed through it and made it back to the alleyway. A mere moment later, the two made it to the lobby of the Crimson Cross.

"So this is your branch, it's..."

"CEDRIC, MAKE MY OFFICE INTO SPACE THREE, NOW!"

Cedric nodded, and the two made their way into the room. It was much bigger than before; the once small office was now a hospital room set for two.

Sami quickly laid Solaris damaged body down, and Celer followed with Ember's.

After he did, he left the room without another word.

Wasting no more time sami rolled her sleeves up and walked over to Ember's body.

You first.

A slight glow emanated from Sami's left hand as she quickly glided over his entire frame, making sure not to miss a spot. His physical body was not scarred, bloodied, or damaged in any way, but it didn't mean he wasn't in constant pain from the recovered wounds. After a moment, she took a deep breath and placed her left hand on her right wrist.

Within a moment, she grimaced in intense pain.

What happened to you?

Sami felt her heart shake as she took on his pain.

Within a moment, the massive bruise that had sprouted from her hand on her wrist vanished. taking the true pain away, yet leaving the memory of it all.

As soon as it did, she turned and moved her left hand to examine Solaris. His wounds were much worse, especially his leg.

His shirt was torn and completely coated in both cold and warm blood, of which his body was losing a lot, yet he remained alive and breathing, giving her a few more moments.

"Oh, what did you do?"

Sami questioned as she glided the light over his wounds, the holes, cuts, and blood slowly vanished as her hand passed over them.

Within the faint light, a tiny ball of blood began to form; it only grew as she moved her hand over more and more wounds.

After a moment, the bloodied wounds were no more, leaving only his dislocated shoulder and his shattered shin.

Sami took a deeper breath and touched her arm with the faint light.

Within moments, her arm took on all of the cuts, stabs, and bruises Solaris had acquired over the last few months.

Sami stifled a scream as the pain consumed her.

Fighting the pain with all her might, she soon felt the true pain vanish along with the blood seeping from her wounds.

The memory of that pain would remain, but it was much easier to fight than the true pain.

Without waiting for the memory to fade, she placed the light over his shoulder and watched it slide back into place, no longer barely held together.

She once again took a breath and placed her hand on herself, yet this time, she placed it on her shoulder.

She felt her bone slide and snap out of place, then a moment later, as a tear dripped down her face, both the pain and the tear disappeared, as her bone was back to normal.

Finnally, she placed her left hand over Solaris's destroyed leg.

Slowly, she glided the light over his leg.

As the light passed over his leg, she watched as the bone fragments and wounds littering his leg disappeared, the bent leg slowly straightened as the bone was steadily repaired, the wound slowly formed into a ball in the light, and after a moment, it was done.

The once destroyed leg was now good as new, just like the rest of him.

damn it... this is really, really going to suck!

Sami, this time, didn't take a breath and instead walked over to a chair, placed a rolled-up towel in her mouth, and raised her leg.

three... two..

Sami placed her left hand onto her raised leg and felt the immeasurable pain of the entirety of her femur being shattered, followed by the broken bone cutting her skin.

Tears poured down the poor girl's face, some even making it to the towel she was biting down on so hard that it was likely to have some holes.

The pain was like no other; she had only experienced worse once in her life.

"GAHGHHGHG!!"

A muffled scream left Sami's mouth, and a moment later, the pain vanished, leaving only the dreadful memory.

Sami spat the towel out onto the ground, a glob of saliva following it.

She didn't wipe her face as the excess spit disappeared, but a moment later.

Looking over, she saw the two she had just helped, and couldn't help but smile, as she saw the one she'd been awaiting was already awake and was staring off into the distance, his face displaying a look she had never seen it display before.

Ember was terrified.

His eyes were open into a hollow stare, his lips were slightly quivering, and his body was even shaking.

Thank you, god.

"Ember."

Once Sami called out to him, Ember flinched ever so slightly, his gaze shifted from the wall and now to her.

"I'm so happy you're back. I mi..."

"I need to see my wife. Thank you for saving Him, Sami. I appreciate it more than you can ever know"

As he spoke, he walked over to Sami and picked her up. Embracing her in a quick hug before walking out of the room.

As he did, Sami's face twitched, and her heart sank.

damn it, why do you forsake me, god?

She raised her hand to her chest and felt it beating heavily.

She knew this feeling so well; it was something she was so aware of that it was no second nature for her to feel it.

It was love.
