Penny's POV
The email arrived in my inbox that morning, crisp and professional. The subject line read: [Reinstatement to Position — Penny Hayes.] Even though Felicity had already briefed me on yesterday's board meeting results, seeing it in writing still made my pulse quicken.
[Dear Ms. Hayes, we are pleased to inform you that the administrative board of Sterling Vintage has voted to reinstate you to your former position. Please report to Human Resources at your earliest convenience to complete the necessary paperwork and receive information regarding your probationary period.] The mention of probationary period stung. I was cleared, yes, but still under scrutiny. Still being tested. It was better than unemployment, but it hardly felt like vindication.
I showed up at HR precisely on time, determined to project confidence despite the anxiety churning in my stomach.
Doris from Human Resources welcomed me with a professional smile and gestured toward the chair facing her desk.
