Chapter 6 - The Night of the Murder(3)

Judy was sweating all over after hurriedly returning to the RS base and reporting the Boss.

She noticed how her every sentence made the Boss more and more annoyed. She watched the other high rank agent, Dallion, sitting opposite to the round table staring at her with a mocking smile. Two chairs were empty.

"You didn't burn the body down?" Boss spoke, slamming his fist on the table.

Judy stammered, "He was fat. He was fat okay? And half-dead. My poison wouldn't have killed in an instant. It would have–"

"–have taken too much time to burn down." A deep voice continued. All three of them looked towards the door. Agent Z walked in, his long black coat and his face shadowed by the hat camouflaged him in the darkness.

The only light was in the middle of the ceiling, directly above the table, darkening the corners of the room.

Beside Agent Z followed another agent. Agent Brown, an aged, short and stout man.

Z continued, as he approached his chair,

"We do not know the killer. It is an honest statement. And what we don't know, nobody else knows. So, it would be easier to cover it up, the murder. I have some ideas and I'm am willing to act as soon as possible."

Dallion leaned forward, showing his interest. Judy too looked at him attentively, although frowning. Boss made a low grim sound from his throat.

"I never said anything about covering up."

Judy turned to Boss, staring at him in disbelief at his words. "Wha-" Her voice faded in confusion. Didn't you yell at me for the same reason, two-face.

All the four high ranking agents looked at their boss for an explanation.

"Let there be a break in the system. Let the murderer disappear without a trace. Let him be unpredictable."

The cunning man's gaze fell over each one of them, slowly and lazily.

"But what will King Cedric think? Aren't we supposed to work perfectly for him." Judy spoke, her voice breaking. Boss rolled his eyes at her words. He certainly didn't appreciate the young king.

"I said, let there be murder. Does anyone know who the murderer is, including you all?"

He waited.

"No. Well, Judy told me the victim was someone from the press. The only business we had with the press was arresting the journalists who had been slipping hints in some specific code between the words in his articles. Of course, no one noticed or even if they did, no one took any action. Well that journalist did not have anyone, from our collected data about him, right?"

He took a sip of water from the glass placed before him.

"The murderer, definitely a relative or a close friend of him, took action for that journalist. No agent thought about a possibility like that. Is it our fault?"

He stopped again, this time looking for a answer. A correct answer.

"No." Z answered.

Boss looked at him and raised a eyebrow, letting him continue.

"Because there really was no possibility unless he escaped our database. Unless he was inexistent in our database. Which makes him an Unpredictable. Unpredictables are not mere faults but threats." Agent Z said, recalling the words that were once taught to him in his childhood.

Boss's dry lips curled up into a smile before he opened his mouth to talk.

"Correct. He is not our mistake because he was never under us to begin with. So, it makes sense to allow this murder to be kept as it is. There will be no possible explanation to anyone, just like to us, even though now we will try and succeed. Anyways, this leads to two possible outcomes."

Boss raised one finger.

"First, the chaos will fade away due to no possible reason or explanation to ponder about."

He raised his second finger, now with a sinister smile.

"Or someone will find an explanation. Out of all impossibilities. Something unpredictable."

Boss nodded proudly to himself.

"Two birds in one stone. Z, keep an look out for another unpredictable that might emerge with an explanation."

Agent Z bowed as his hat completely shadowed his expression. He left the room with Agent Brown following him.
