(This chapter is from the POV of David Conoway)
"Sir, you called for me"
"I've been expecting you…. Close the door behind you and sit down, Mr.Conoway, we have lot to discuss today"
"Okay, Sir"
"So, David…. Do you like snowy mountains?"
"I don't hate them to say the least…. Is this relevant to the topic we're about to discuss"
"Oh yes…. You can say, this is the meat and potatoes of the discussion itself"
I lied through my teeth, I hate snowy mountains. First and foremost, those type of areas are very desolate, second, everyday household items sometimes become a rare commodity due to the transportation grid in those areas and finally, I don't like the cold, yes, I know many folks would say they would kill for the chance to stay in a hill station, but, in my personal experience, when you visit a hill station to have a good time is a different story when compared to the actually living in that hill station. For the tourists, the small inconveniences are temporary because at the end of the tour, they know they will back in their comfy houses with the luxuries, a hill station resident can only dream of and that is my reason, why I hate snowy mountains.
"I'll cut to the chase, David, a new branch just opened in Kashville city, which is north side of the country and you know that is a cold area"
"Okay, Sir…. And what is my role in all this?"
"Well, obviously…. You are the guy I have chosen to represent our department"
I wanted to say no, immediately and then, thought not to do that and I'd have never thought of denying so abruptly if he just started with what he was about to say now.
"You know, David, a transfer does not always mean negatives only…. Sometimes there are some perks involved too"
"Sir, may I know the perks?"
Mr.Darrel Notings, laughed for the first time during this whole discussion and with a smirk he said.
"The perk is a pay bump…. You'll be getting a hike around 150%"
"150%" If I said my jaw dropped at this revelation, it'd be 100% true because it's freaking 150%.
"Since it's a new branch so we're a little short staffed and you'll doing a little more work than usual…. So, we have to compensate yoy properly and since I know how hard you work I put in a little word for you"
All my life I have thought that my boss was a ruthless, money-hungry, psychopath but I think for the first time in my life, I won't be cursing him when I share a drink or two with Mitch in the bar after our shift is done. I'll be thanking, Mr.Darrel, for an angel he is, tonight I will toast in the name of Mr.Darrel Notings, the best boss in the world.
"Sir…. I'll gladly accept your offer and I'm very grateful that you put in that word for me"
"Hey, David, look man I know it's tough to raise one kid and you got two"
Mr.Darrel looked at me with compassionate eyes.
I was a little emotional at that remark, maybe I've been wrong all this time. God forgive me for making a mockery of this man during all my drinking hours.
"You take your leave now"
"Okay, Sir…. And again, Thank you, Sir"
I can't wait to tell Martha about this news, I felt giddy and cheerful on the way back to my cubical.
